Hassani and Divya, I am going to provided some chat logistics information. As I am doing so, can you provide a brief bio telling us where you are from, what you did before coming to MIT, what you are involved in at MIT, and what you want to do after earning your MBA?

Linda, I am currently participating in various organizations at Sloan. I am a member of the Social Enterprise Club (SEID) where we participate in various projects related to small businesses in developing countries. I am also in the entrepreneurship and innovation program, as well as participating in the 100K business plan competition. So many opportunities, so little time :)!

Brian, It takes approximately 6-8 weeks for the Professional Admissions Committee to review all applications (please note- students and alumni do not take part in this process). We anticipate interview invitations to go out through December and January.

ABC, many of our students do actually pursue entrepreneurial things after graduation, but are also fully employed by companies that are able to pay them a salary.

Nat, in one word - entrepreneurship. MIT fosters a community of innovators and entrepreneurs. It provides you with the necessary foundation to start or expand a business. Beyond academics, the network is amazing. I have already formed a start up team and I am thrilled about the market we are entering into.

Tria, We do actually encourage college seniors to apply. We have a very diverse population of students. and consider all experience outside of the classroom to be "work experience". In fact, college seniors who apply are the only population of applicants who are able to defer their acceptance for 2 years if they choose.

Wilson, to answer your question to Jen, this year, students will be able to attend an information session on the E&I track once they matriculate at MIT Sloan. Then, you will have the opportunity to take part in the E&I track and all of its offerings. Most students who participate in the E&I track are looking for the cohort experience. Some, already have entrepreneurial experience, and the majority is interested in entrepreneurship either now, in the near future or down the road.

FG, In my opinion, Sloan provides a great mix of qualitative and quantitative content. The student body is incredibly diverse with impressive backgrounds, yet they all remain humble. There are so many innovators here who are trying to figure out solutions to unmet needs. The atmosphere is very inspiring.

Buck, the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program (E&I) is a special track that Sloan offers. You have to apply for it in the application process.

Bennett, we use a competency modeling approach when evaluating applicants- so we will be looking at the stories you provide in your cover letter, essays and also the data provided in your letters of recommendation. Competencies such as being goal oriented or having a history of impacting change at the organizations in which you work/are affiliated with are all strengths.

Dana, we admit half the class in each round, and typically do receive more applications in round 2, so statistically there tends to be a higher acceptance rate in round 1 vs. Round 2.

Vivek Pai, Yes our ambassadors program is active this month and all the way through the beginning of December. The class visit slots have been filling up quickly. H2 classes and full semester classes will still be available after the 25th of October. Please note, we have added a new opportunity for you to interact with students on campus- Friday Breakfast Information sessions. We held our first one last Friday and it was incredibly successful. Over 65 students attended and we had Admissions staff and student lead roundtables. Our next Friday information session will be October 14 from 8-9:30AM (and there are still a few openings).

Israel, Outside of everything I have learned in the classes, Sloan has really taught be how to me a leader in any setting. There are tremendous opportunities here to get involved in activities and make an impact. You can do everything from leading a club, organizing a trek to another country to being a part of the senate.

Lorena, a 610 is at the very bottom of our range. In fact, our 80% range of GMAT for this year's class is 650-760, which means that only 10% scored below 650. If your score is below this, it is VERY important that you have other parts of your application that are strong enough to balance out the lower score.

Prem Kumar, we have eliminated the supplemental/extra curricular section from this year's application. Since the Admissions readers read your entire application, it makes sense to only put information in one spot (for example, you cover letter, your resume or essay #4). Our goal is that you will speak about the extra curricular activities that you are most passionate about and will provide in depth details and stories about them in your application.

Israel, that is a tough question. At this point, one week before midterms, I would have to say that "No man is an island" comes to mind. Team work is essential to making it through b-school. Gaining input from your peers on projects or ideas is essential. Study groups are a must. ; )

Jason, we do not have an exact statistic on scholarship/fellowships. but many students do receive some type of aid. In fact, last year, our new Dean was able to double the fellowship aid we award to the incoming class. There are also many other ways to get scholarships, many are funded through outside organizations, and something that is unique to MIT Sloan is that about 30% of our students are able to fund their education by being a Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant here at MIT Sloan.

Nishant, there are many opportunities to get involved in social enterprise; Organizations such as SEID and Net Impact are a great resource. My 100K project actually has a focus in the developing world. Also, Sloan is very involved in sustainability.

Midwest, Please follow the instructions that we have asked for. We ask for experiences only within the past 3 years because we look at your past performance as an indicator of your future success and the more recent your experiences, the more indicative they are of your success.

Jen: I am an avid entrepreneur (started 3 different apparel companies - still working on/in my third at $500k in first year sales). However I still find I need some more education to reach the goals I have set for myself. I am bent towards entrepreneurship, but not as much tech or engineering; Do you think this would be a good fit?

Linda: Choosing Sloan was really easy after I visited here for admit weekend. During that time I met some really interesting and accomplished students, but what really stood out was how humble and genuine everyone was. It made me feel at home right away. Prior to visiting, my focus was on Sloan for its strength in technology and analytical skills.

Leo Barros, it really depends on the quality of professional experiences you have had....from your internships, your Optional Practical Training (OPT) and prior. If you feel the time is right for you to attend an MBA program at MIT Sloan and that you can contribute to a diverse and active student body- then apply now. If you feel that you would benefit from more years in the work environment, then you may want to consider waiting. The timing of when you apply for an MBA is a personal one. So there is a lot of introspection and research that goes into this personal process of when to apply. You are definitely doing your due diligence in this area!

Ranjit, Sloan has a finance track which tailors course load for students who are interested in finance. It is very much like E&I and a great foundation for anyone interested in a finance career.

MK, Sloan has been a great fit for me given my background. My past focus in terms of both school and work has been very engineering oriented. The class here is very diverse in terms of work experience. It has been great talking to all the other students to truly understand what their old jobs were and how that may help me determine my future career goals.

Hi Badger, we have students with all types of backgrounds and varied amounts of experience. Currently there are students in the class with 0-15 years of experience. However, we're much more interested in the quality of your experiences than the brand name of the company you're working for or how long you've been there.

Jen: the MIT website says that you accept GRE scores in place of GMAT. Are the students submitting GRE scores at a disadvantage as compared to people submitting a GMAT score? What is the average GRE score expected?

HJ, the more you know about the program, the better you can determine if the fit between you and the MIT Sloan community is a good one. MIT Sloan is a unique community- a small class size- approximately 340 in our entering class and students who are intellectually strong and "doers." I think it makes sense to step foot on campus and also to interact with current students/alumni if this is possible. That said, many students apply and THEN come to visit - the choice is yours.

FG, The MIT motto is Mens et Manus "Mind in Hand." Sloan is very focused on real life application. Sloan has various labs which allow students to receive real life application, China-Lab, India-Lab, G-Lab, Sustainability Lab, etc. In these labs, students have the opportunity to work with real companies on real issues.

Sanjay, that is not true. We are the management school at MIT, but we are a General Management program for people from all different backgrounds. Currently, about 30% of our students have an undergraduate degree in engineering.

Rogerhc: There are a lot of on-campus housing options available to you - you can get a studio or share an apartment with another graduate student. There is a pretty good mix of students living on campus vs. surrounding neighborhoods - such as Kendall Square, Central Square and Beacon Hill.

MK, last year we had 4,000 applicants and we interviewed approximately 1,000. Everyone who is accepted to MIT Sloan has been interviewed by the Admissions Committee. The great new is that the Admissions committee travels to almost all major cities to interview candidates.

Lorena, there is no difference. Because you need to be admitted to both MBA and Engineering in order to do LFM. We are looking for students who have interesting experiences, who are academically strong and find MIT Sloan to be a good fit.

D_Cho, the SIP period is popular because it's required. We are required to take a certain amount of SIP credits to graduate. The classes offered during SIP week are informative and fun.

NJ, the TA positions and RA positions are a fabulous way to fund a portion of your education. Approximately 1/3 of our students participate in these roles. Applying for a TA position is a competitive one, but typically student apply via faculty who they have established relationships with in class or in whose class they have done particularly well in. Applications are submitted in the fall for spring TA/RA internships. The only semester that students do not TA/RA is during the core.

Jen, I am involved in a number of activities and organizations. One of my key contributing positions is that I am a youth Director and a BOD member at a church. I am very active in management and leadership issues there. Given MIT’s academic and cerebral focus and, to some extent, academic bias against faith based organizations, do you suggest omitting my leadership involvement with the church?

Jen: Having worked in teams all throughout my university degree (diploma engineering) at a university with problem-based learning (PBL), and having gotten the same grade as the rest of the group in situations with quite different work efforts/performance in the group, is it crucial for me to make up for some of these not so optimal grades, or is understood that grades in this case depends on 4-5 other people also?

All, Since I've been seeing a lot of questions around engineering backgrounds - I just wanted to mention that my current core team has an engineer, a lawyer, a general manager, a consultant, a marketing manager and a banker - so there is definitely a lot of diversity.

Hi Jennifer - at the Ambassadors program last week, I was told that Sloan considers the cover letter as just another essay. However, the semantics of writing a cover letter are very different from those of an essay (i.e. you can be slightly more informal with essays than with cover letters). So, I wanted to find out Sloan's rationale behind calling it a cover letter when in fact, it is read as an essay.

FV, here is my take: Entrepreneurship is about creating something that meets an unmet need, social enterprise is also about creating something to meet an unmet need. Regardless of interest, the tools that you will gain here at Sloan prepare you to think critically about your approach to meeting this unmet need. Sloan has a diverse student body with many interests, including non-profit and social enterprise. My experience has been one of encouragement and support. The resources and the support are here.

Brian L, to clarify - only professional admissions staff review the application and conduct interviews. We work very hard to keep the evaluation process fair - in fact, all the Admission committee meets regularly to "calibrate" our evaluation methodology- to ensure that each applicant is receiving a similar review.

Nj24, I'm also interested in the VC industry. The curriculum is really flexible in that you only have one semester of required classes. After that you can focus on whatever you want. As far as VC recruiting goes, a lot of it is relationship based - and you get a lot of opportunity to build those relationships. We have regular speaker and breakfast series as a part of the VC PE club. I'm also one of the organizers of the upcoming VC conference - another great way to meet people from the industry.

Ranjit -- We do ask that students take micro economics, finance accounting and calculus before matriculating, if they haven't had exposure to these subjects before, but we do not require this for application process, just before matriculation.

Aziz, MIT Sloan offers a wide variety of funding solutions, including fellowship, Teaching Assistant internships and merit scholarships. The majority of our students also fund their degree through independent loans.

Sam, reapplicants are typically very successful in our process, and usually know what went wrong the first time. Last year was extremely competitive, we had a 28% increase in applications. We ask you to apply in round 1 and give all re-applicants first chance at a seat in the class. Just be sure that your new application compliments your old one, we'll have both this year when reviewing your candidacy.

Jacob, it really depends on the quality of your experience versus the quantity. You need to make the decision that is most appropriate for your career/personal goals. If you can make an impact on an organization in just 2 months, that may be fine. If you feel that you need a longer time to initiate a positive change at the organization, then a longer internship opportunity may work better for you.

Buck - Absolutely! As I mentioned before, we only have one semester of required classes. Beyond that you have a lot of freedom in what you want to focus on. The program also allows you to take up to 2 classes at MIT (outside of the business school) and at Harvard.

David, 1. We look at all applicants with different backgrounds, we have plenty of students who haven't taken any of those classes before, don't worry! 2. Unfortunately, due to very recent events, CitiBank has cancelled our custom loan program which used to provide a "no-cosigner " loan program for all students. The school is in the process of finding a solution to this and hopes to have a custom loan program for next year, soon.

JKeymoore, letters of recommendation are very important to help us determine your work success and to evaluate how you compare with your peers in a work situation. I would actively work with your recommenders and let them know what you are writing about. That way they can enhance/provide more detail and perspective to your application. If you provide a little coaching to them, I am sure they will be able to fill in the gaps/add to your application.

Nj24, the program is rigorous but you can definitely get involved in other activities. To give you a better idea, I'm taking core classes this semester, still make it to the gym 3-4 times a week and I'm very involved in the upcoming Elevator Pitch Contest and the VC conference. I'm also a member of the Student Activities Board and Mobile Tech clubs. And like Hassani, I'm working on a SEID project!

Rgilyard, your GPA is just one part of your application. GPA can be impacted by a variety of factors (such as the school you went to, the program you were involved in, if you worked during school etc). We do not have a cut off for GPA or GMAT. Try to focus on other parts of your application which you can now control, i.e. - your essays, cover letter and resume.

Israel, we do look at the GMAT breakdown of verbal/quant. if you feel that part of your score is low, then find other areas in your application to help balance it out, i.e. : work experience, recommendations, etc.

Rogerhc, it is illegal for us to have quotas in our admissions process. We take the strongest people who apply, no matter where they come from. In fact we work VERY hard (just look at our recruiting calendar) to get a diverse applicant pool, and are fortunate enough to admit the strongest who apply, no matter where they come from.

If the applicant doesn't meet these, you expect formal studies to have been completed before enrollment. Could you please clarify what these formal studies include as subjects?

Aravind, if you don't have these courses, and we admit you, you'll be given a conditional acceptance, meaning that you can only enroll once you've completed the courses. This does not impact the application process.

IFY, congratulations on your pregnancy! We have a number of mothers/mothers-to-be in the program. We provide support to them (i.e.- lactation room etc), however, are unable to provide extended leaves due to the short nature of the program. Sloan Women in Management, a female professional club on campus, also actively supports its members as does the MBA Administrative team.

I know that this year, we have a member of the Admissions committee who just moved to Delhi- so I imagine Delhi would be one of the cities. Possibly, Bangalore/Mumbai. Wannabie: We have 6 oceans of students (seventy students per ocean) and within your ocean there is your cohort or core team (6-7 students) that you do projects with and study with. The core team is named after a bird. So, I am a Baltic Penguin. Baltic is my ocean and Penguin is the name of my core team. The way you find out your oceans and core teams is quite exciting and so much fun!

The majority of interviews are conducted in person- we feel it is a significant disadvantage for candidates to interview over the phone. That said, in rare cases, such as if you are serving in Iraq etc, we will provide a phone interview.
