MBA: Wharton admissions Chat (Jan. 07, 2002)

Please feel free to let us know if you would like to be informed of future chats by sending e-mail to chat@accepted.com. We would also be interested in knowing if you would prefer a different format or different topics.

Chat Transcript:

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:07:46 PM)
Let's start.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:08:02 PM)
First I want to welcome you all to Accepted.com's Wharton admissions chat.

ed (ID=53) (Jan 7, 2002 9:08:02 PM)
hello...

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:08:12 PM)
thanks for having me!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:08:25 PM)
I want to welcome Alex Brown, Associate Director of Wharton's Admissions Committee. I also want to welcome Paul Bodine, one of Accepted.com's editors.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:08:33 PM)
It's our pleasure.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:08:41 PM)
Thanks to everyone for joining.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:08:55 PM)
I encourage dialogue and discussion, but I would like to suggest a structure to make it easier to follow the threads of conversation. So here is the protocol: We will post material to the chat. If you have a question on that material, please type a "?" and then your question. I and/or other participants will reply. If one of you wants to comment on the current topic, please jump right in. If you want to start a different topic, please type "?".

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:09:04 PM)
If the crowd this evening grows and I feel that a moderated chat would be more beneficial, we'll switch to that format to avoid the chaotic feel that some other chats have had.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:09:11 PM)
Final request: We would like to avoid the brief summary of qualifications (or even the long laundry list) followed by the question, "Can I qualify?" Or "What are my chances?" This isn't the forum for that kind of question.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:09:21 PM)
Other than that limitation, this is your chance to ask questions about Wharton's program and admissions policies. But I would like to take advantage of my position as host and ask the first questions.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:09:28 PM)
Wharton changed a number of aspects of its admissions process this year, going form rolling admissions to rounds and to by-invitation-only interviews. Why did you make these changes?

LauderAppli (ID=52) (Jan 7, 2002 9:10:20 PM)
Shall we start now?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:10:37 PM)
Yes, but I would like to suggest we wait for Alex to answer the question I posed.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:10:42 PM)
we changed because of the issue of really wanting to interview EVERYONE we would eventually admit ... interviewing the entire applicant pool was a huge resource issue, so we had to make some decisions

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:10:58 PM)
And the change from rolling admissions to rounds?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:11:45 PM)
I think the rounds helps with the interview process, so they are somewhat related etc.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:11:46 PM)
You will soon be releasing the response to Round 1 applicants and undoubtedly some of them will be waitlisted. Do you have any advice for wait-listed applicants? Does Wharton intend to continue providing feedback to rejected applicants interested in reapplying?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:12:45 PM)
2 questions :) for WL people a response will be required and potential follow up may be advised depending on the circumstances ... but reading the wl letter and follow direction is the best advice

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:12:58 PM)
Do you expect busy recommenders to fill out your specific form? Do you look negatively on letters sent by the recommender to all the schools an applicant is applying to and merely attached to your form?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:13:22 PM)
yes, we will continue to offer feedback, pretty important, I think, considering the time invested in the application by the applicant and the adcomm in reading.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:13:33 PM)
I agree with you.

I love lucy (ID=64) (Jan 7, 2002 9:14:01 PM)
sorry I am late

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:14:39 PM)
?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:14:42 PM)
recs. that answer the questions directly are making it easier for the reviewers to process the rec. Also our online rec. would be better answered by answering each question. If a rec. answers all questions in somewhat of an essay format that will be fine.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:14:52 PM)
Do you welcome updates regarding change in employment status or new GMAT scores while you are considering an application?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:15:05 PM)
go ahead vsn.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:15:36 PM)
updates are OK, we can never guarantee they will be included, they should be faxed

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:15:43 PM)
It's your turn now. Please post your questions by typing a "?" and the question.

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:16:00 PM)
?As the applicant pool increased, undoubtedly the bar will be raised. do you have any stat for round 1 applicants who were offered admission?

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:16:25 PM)
? I am an international applicant. Is it necessary to fill in the transcript request form? I already have them in a sealed envelope.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:16:36 PM)
no one has been offered admissions, but it will no doubt be a great year for those admitted

bm (ID=68) (Jan 7, 2002 9:16:45 PM)
? I just want to know about the applications u received so far in the first two rounds.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:17:05 PM)
VSN no transcripts are fine, the spreadsheet is OPTIONAL

LauderAppli (ID=52) (Jan 7, 2002 9:17:08 PM)
Alex, does Lauder Institute necessarily discourage any applicant with an OPI score lower than 2-?

blitzer (ID=45) (Jan 7, 2002 9:17:13 PM)
?Alex, can you tell us what days this week that decisions will be made on R1 applicants (so I know when to send positive vibes in the general direction of Philly)?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:17:24 PM)
Let's hold the questions for a minute.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:17:33 PM)
BM, round 1 = about 2,800, round 2, over 3k but not sure yet how many

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:17:54 PM)
LauderAp don't know, Lauder will have to answer that

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:18:15 PM)
B :) sorry, don't know!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:18:25 PM)
You're fast Alex!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:18:31 PM)
More questions...

LauderAppli (ID=52) (Jan 7, 2002 9:18:34 PM)
It's fine, thanks!

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:18:34 PM)
? I started my online application. But now, I would like to send the application by mail. Will it be a problem?

MLS (ID=54) (Jan 7, 2002 9:18:37 PM)
? Can GMAT scores be simply self reported until one gains acceptance, and then the formal score report sent to Wharton (similar to transcript)? Or should the formal score report be sent now?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:18:44 PM)
I enjoy chats :)

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:18:52 PM)
I'm glad you do!

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:19:02 PM)
VSN, no problem, you are not the only one!

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:19:16 PM)
MLS, yes, self-report is fine

AlexUA (ID=55) (Jan 7, 2002 9:19:23 PM)
? Hi Alex =) Do you have many applicants from ex-USSR countries? Are they competetive?

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:19:29 PM)
?

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:19:29 PM)
? Alex , are round 2 applications are be reviewed or they are still on hold for round 1 to be clear up?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:19:46 PM)
A sure we do, just interviewed some when in Frankfurt!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:19:48 PM)
go ahead bschool2003

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:20:12 PM)
D they are being reviewed, interview invites will start going out after Jan 10

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:20:24 PM)
? Are the chances of getting admitted reduced as the final dead line approaches?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:20:47 PM)
Do you welcome updates regarding change in employment status or new GMAT scores while you are considering an application?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:20:53 PM)
V are you asking about R3 versus R 1 and 2?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:20:58 PM)
Sorry, I already posted that. Please ignore.

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:21:03 PM)
Yes

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:21:11 PM)
L yes, by fax, we cannot guarantee it makes the review

MLS (ID=54) (Jan 7, 2002 9:21:19 PM)
?So we have >5800 apps in the 1st 2 rounds ... please remind me what last years total was.

bm (ID=68) (Jan 7, 2002 9:21:20 PM)
? I want to send my secondary school transcripts and extra-curricular activities' details as an additional matter, while applying in the second round. These are no doubt one of my best achievements. But, I know that u normally do not require these. I am sure that these will strengthen my case of admission.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:21:49 PM)
V yes, R 3 may be tougher, but that should not discourage someone committed to applying. Clearly not applying guarantees non-admissions :)

sacfur (ID=66) (Jan 7, 2002 9:21:57 PM)
?Alex, For programs like the GIM are these expenses figured in the fees for the MBA program

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:22:10 PM)
I took the GMAT in the summer of 1999 (between junior and senior years in college) -- I will be applying to W this fall for a fall 2003 start date. Although GMAT scores are officially valid for 5 years, am I even marginally hurting my chances by using a score that is over two years old?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:22:33 PM)
M about that, last year about 7,400 our highest year was about 8,300 (2 years before)

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:22:34 PM)
? Alex, I saw somewhere that the number for admission for R1: 350, R2:350, R3 150, is that actual?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:23:20 PM)
B fax the info if you want, as I mentioned we try but cannot guarantee it makes the review

bm (ID=68) (Jan 7, 2002 9:23:25 PM)
? I know some professors of my likely major in MBA. Can I mention their work of interest in my essays and my desire to work under them.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:23:57 PM)
S for GIP money needs to be added to the budget (about 5k I think)

sacfur (ID=66) (Jan 7, 2002 9:24:15 PM)
Ok

wharton4me (ID=57) (Jan 7, 2002 9:24:18 PM)
? Alex, I hope you verify language skills reported by applicants. For instance, I put down English, German and Chinese. Do you attempt to have conversation in foreign languages in interviews? I sometimes suspect people who claim they speak 100 languages.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:24:45 PM)
B scores are good for 5 years, certainly if they are at average or above you are fine.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:25:34 PM)
D, no numbers not accurate, for a start we admit over 1,000 people, and we have not made those estimations

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:25:46 PM)
OK, I am not able to answer so quickly :)

skm (ID=62) (Jan 7, 2002 9:25:53 PM)
?

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:25:56 PM)
?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:25:57 PM)
You're still real good!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:26:09 PM)
let's wait a minute. there are a couple of questions on the floor.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:26:29 PM)
B if that is a critical reason for Wharton it may be worth noting as it applied to your goals etc.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:26:41 PM)
skm, please post your question.

skm (ID=62) (Jan 7, 2002 9:26:48 PM)
Is there any acceptance ratios per each round : no of acceptances/no of applicants

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:27:23 PM)
bschool2003, please post your question.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:27:51 PM)
W never seen a 100 language claim, we have the right to review everything, any misrepresentation can rebuke a decision, not a smart situation for anyone to have to be concerned about during their time at Wharton!

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:28:46 PM)
S not really, rounds or no rounds, we still have a good feel for the quality of people we need to admit, and we admit based on quality

MLS (ID=54) (Jan 7, 2002 9:28:47 PM)
? First, the Wharton s2s board is an outstanding forum. But is it more "Alex2Applicant" or "applicant2applicant" than "student2student/applicant" or are there frequent student inputs beyond the diaries?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:28:48 PM)
Also, I think you should all realize, that it is very easy simply to reject something that simply doesn't smell right. It's much easier to reject such an application than to investigate it.

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:28:59 PM)
? Alex, a question about GIP, I read Laura's diary, and got the feeling the demand for the greater than the supply. I am very interested in GIP to China.  What is Wharton doing to address the demand?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:29:50 PM)
M there are student inputs, but most questions lately have been based around admissions related questions. I can assure you if a question is about academics at Wharton I cannot answer it!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:30:07 PM)
Do you resent it or appreciate it when applicants who are wait-listed, write and say "I have heard from School X and have to respond to them by Date Y. Is there any possibility you could give me an answer before Date Y. I would prefer to attend your school."

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:30:36 PM)
D I think the demand and supply is OK, I have not heard of people getting shut out of GIP

AlexUA (ID=55) (Jan 7, 2002 9:30:39 PM)
? Alex, what is "quality op people" for Wharton?

dkooyman (ID=69) (Jan 7, 2002 9:30:41 PM)
BTW Alex thanks for all you inputs in those forums.

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:31:16 PM)
How is Wharton's placement at leveraged buyout firms? Despite its preeminent finance reputation, it seems to lag HBS and Stanford somewhat in placing students at top private equity firms -- spoke with several W interns last summer and all were struggling to land any PE jobs. I'm only asking b/c it plays into my long-term career goals which are reflected in my app.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:31:52 PM)
L that's very risky, we may lean for the candidate but to do so we are taking risks (or why would we have put him/her on the WL) or we may just decide to let the person go!

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:32:22 PM)
?How do you calculate the undergraduate performance for international students with degrees from colleges that do not follow the GPA system?

sacfur (ID=66) (Jan 7, 2002 9:32:22 PM)
?Alex, does Wharton encourage students who have businesses to continue running them while in the MBA program

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:32:30 PM)
Thanks. I didn't mean it as a tactic. I meant it as a reflection of a real situation.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:32:31 PM)
A I think our CD captures the essence of the quality of people at Wharton

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:33:35 PM)
B check w/ Career mgt, and it really also will depend on each individual's background etc. PE is getting tough I assume at this time?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:34:07 PM)
V we have expertise around the world re: transcripts

bm (ID=68) (Jan 7, 2002 9:34:45 PM)
? MY this ? is regarding optional essay. Can somebody inform about his severe financial situation and its implication on one's prof. and academic life in the optional essay?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:34:54 PM)
S that's tough to do, hands on, in the first year for sure, its best to have contingency plans for the biz

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:35:45 PM)
L I know, but it is still a tough situation, I think its OK to tell us a deadline is coming up re: another school ... but not to push someone into a decision?

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:35:52 PM)
Alex, PE really is at this time -- I work with an LBO shop and we put out an ad for a true entry-level Analyst and got resumes from MBAs at all the top schools!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:35:59 PM)
Fair enough.

sacfur (ID=66) (Jan 7, 2002 9:36:06 PM)
Thanks. Some schools prohibit students from doing that. hence the question

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:36:34 PM)
B sure, if it has had a major impact then it needs addressing

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:37:27 PM)
(I think I am caught up)!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:37:31 PM)
How would you feel about an extra letter of rec?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:37:37 PM)
You are!

craig (ID=60) (Jan 7, 2002 9:37:39 PM)
? do you have any advice for non-traditional applicants, i.e. middle age, mid career change

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:37:42 PM)
?

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:37:49 PM)
? I would like to submit a third recommendation. Where should I mention that?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:37:49 PM)
go ahead bschool2003

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:37:57 PM)
L if the rec. adds something different, then sure (community service, mentor etc.)

skm (ID=62) (Jan 7, 2002 9:38:34 PM)
?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:38:36 PM)
C make a compelling case for the MBA, for why it makes sense for you now and what you want to do etc.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:39:10 PM)
V you can always note your rec. choices in the optional essay

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:39:11 PM)
go ahead skm

AlexUA (ID=55) (Jan 7, 2002 9:39:23 PM)
? Alex, I work in a family-owned (partly) company. Does it make difference for my employment history. Also, what about recommendations?

MLS (ID=71) (Jan 7, 2002 9:40:05 PM)
?Will the first applicant in RD 2 find out about an interview (assuming he/she gets one) before/after/same time as the last applicant (who also gets one)? Any difference on when within a given round one applies?

skm (ID=62) (Jan 7, 2002 9:40:28 PM)
rgdg the 3rd rec, I had contributed to AMA online newsletter for two years maintained by Broad Skl Prof Glenn Omura. He is willing to give me a rec. Would it be beneficial

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:40:40 PM)
A we are interested in how you have developed based on your experience, some of the experiences people have are from family biz ... and the questions are what did you learn much like they are from I banking etc.

skm (ID=62) (Jan 7, 2002 9:40:43 PM)
I haven't met him; it's only email communication

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:40:49 PM)
What sort of extra curricular/community activities does the adcomm hope to see from a Wall Street Analyst type working 100 hour weeks? Is there less expectation than for somebody working more sane hours, or do you still see enough superstars who work 100 hours and then find time in the other 68 hours to volunteer/get involved outside work?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:41:14 PM)
M the interview decisions are rolled out as they are made, so timing of the application has some impact

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:41:37 PM)
Thank you Alex, Thanks Linda, Thanks all.

vsn (ID=49) (Jan 7, 2002 9:41:44 PM)
Good night!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:41:49 PM)
Good night vsn.

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:42:01 PM)
?Alex, are the interview invites roll out weekly?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:42:05 PM)
S it depends on the context of the remainder of the recs. and the essays etc. If it is important and fits well, then sure.

Kalina (ID=51) (Jan 7, 2002 9:42:26 PM)
?

skm (ID=62) (Jan 7, 2002 9:42:30 PM)
will that be taken as a 3rd rec

cplin1 (ID=74) (Jan 7, 2002 9:42:38 PM)
Alex, what do you recommend applicants to do to prepare for the Wharton interview?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:42:48 PM)
Let's hold questions for a minute.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:43:47 PM)
cplin1, in addition to whatever Alex recommends, you may want to view response from prior interviews at the MBA Interview Feedback Database.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:44:11 PM)
b re: working hours, we know people are only human (although I interviewed someone the other day who mentioned an exercise where they were not expected to sleep for 5 days) ... however somewhere in the app. we want to see a pattern that suggests you are interested in taking initiative outside of work/edu etc.

cplin1 (ID=74) (Jan 7, 2002 9:45:24 PM)
Thanks, Linda. I was wondering whether Alex had any specific advice for Wharton.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:45:27 PM)
C best way to prepare for the interview is to prepare the application, so those invited to interview should feel prepared.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:45:27 PM)
Kalina, please post your questions.

?Good evening all. Alex - Have you seen a lot of IT consultants, esp. those who were laid off, apply this year? How does this impact the chances of these applicants?

cplin1 (ID=74) (Jan 7, 2002 9:46:09 PM)
Thank you--Alex and Linda.

dkooyman (ID=69) (Jan 7, 2002 9:46:12 PM)
?speaking of 5-days with out sleep...BUD/SEALS how does Wharton view military transitioning to civilian work force?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:46:19 PM)
C advise for Wharton ?? :)

Kalina (ID=51) (Jan 7, 2002 9:46:25 PM)
? Alex, I am applying in the fall...when do you recommend I visit the campus/city?

wharton4me (ID=57) (Jan 7, 2002 9:46:42 PM)
?Alex, Linda, I have completed Round 2 application. Essays were carefully written. Some stats are exceptional (GMAT750+), some are merely good. All in all, a very good app file, but not perfect perfect. and I'd really like to attend Wharton. What can I do now? other than waiting and worrying (because I heard people with very good criteria were rejected without interviews in R1). Is there anything an applicant can do to improve his/her chance for R2 now?

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:47:04 PM)
did I get disconnected?

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:47:12 PM)
?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:47:16 PM)
Cand. don't worry about other people applying, best to worry about your application. I am sure we are seeing some, but I have not counted them, and each person has a unique story!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:47:28 PM)
dongslin, please repost your question.

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:47:54 PM)
? Alex, are interview invites roll out weekly??

dkooyman (ID=69) (Jan 7, 2002 9:48:03 PM)
? When looking at stats how much different is a 720 from a 740 or a 750 etc when is enough enough for GMAT

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:48:29 PM)
D it was a sandhurst training session! We see many mil. apps. transitioning, and some have great experiences (of course) make sure you have a good focus going forward too

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:49:10 PM)
K visit when students are taking classes (so not the summer) Thursdays are best (pub).

dkooyman (ID=69) (Jan 7, 2002 9:49:11 PM)
Those Brit's are wacking I tell ya

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:49:48 PM)
W just wait!

AustinTX (ID=77) (Jan 7, 2002 9:50:11 PM)
? Alex...just wondering what the application number looked like in the first round at Wharton. Was it up significantly over last year? I read on a Businessweek thread that Stanford was rumored to have seen a 7x increase in 1st round apps. Did you see a similar increase?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:50:22 PM)
D yes, interview invites for R 2 will start going out after Jan 10, when the decisions are made

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:50:51 PM)
D enough is enough with the GMAT for those types of scores!!

skm (ID=62) (Jan 7, 2002 9:51:14 PM)
do essay questions change every yr

dkooyman (ID=69) (Jan 7, 2002 9:51:29 PM)
Thanks

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 9:51:39 PM)
? How does the adcomm view someone who has three years of w/e at one firm vs. somebody who does two years at one firm and then the third at another firm (just random examples), assuming career path progressions are similar?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:51:58 PM)
A Stanford did NOT receive a x7 increase ... I can assure you of that. This is our first time with rounds so we have no ytd data.

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:52:09 PM)
? Alex, does adcomm view someone been layoff negatively compare to someone with a job?

MLS (ID=71) (Jan 7, 2002 9:52:23 PM)
?After submitting the application, if one finds a slight mistake, should one do something about it? Is there a high risk that a small error will show that the applicant can not follow directions and will reflect poorly? I tend to be confident that the app overall is good, but curious on the impact ...

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:52:36 PM)
S essays change only if we need to make changes (like last year)

skm (ID=62) (Jan 7, 2002 9:52:56 PM)
will they be the same for next yr

Monkey (ID=48) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:07 PM)
? Any disadvantages to Wharton if interested in the entertainment industry?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:08 PM)
B it depends how someone explains the reasons why they change or stay the same etc.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:10 PM)
Please hold your questions.

AustinTX (ID=77) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:25 PM)
? Follow Up: Just curious then...how many folks applied to Wharton in 1st round?

kurbus (ID=72) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:26 PM)
? Alex, how important is it to send in a transcript request form? I had Berkeley send a bunch of officials to me. I sent my transcript to Wharton via FedEx without an accompanying request form.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:34 PM)
We have quite crowd now. I'm going to switch to a moderated format.

wharton4me (ID=57) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:39 PM)
Austin: 2800

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:47 PM)
D depends why they were laid-off ... if it was due to incompetence that might not be good :)

chuck (ID=79) (Jan 7, 2002 9:53:48 PM)
?Alex: after the interview, how many people re-read the application?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:54:26 PM)
M sorry, it really depends, but a really small error should be fine!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 9:54:36 PM)
You can post all your questions with out leading with a "?" and I will pick the ones for Alex to answer after he catches up with those already on the floor.

CANDIDATE5600 (ID=75) (Jan 7, 2002 9:54:49 PM)
?Alex, on the Businessweek forums, a lot of posts tend to discourage applicants with GMAT below 700 from applying to Wharton. What is an acceptable score in terms of displaying competency, at least academically. How does W view applicants who have taken GMAT 3 or 4 times.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:55:03 PM)
S I don't know (re: essays) we have not decided, but I doubt we will change. M no, we have a strong M and E club etc? A about 2,800 apps for R 1. K it should be fine, certainly since we do not require an official trans. until admission this will be fine for evaluation

dongslin (ID=47) (Jan 7, 2002 9:57:02 PM)
I understood that this year reapplicants had to submit all essays just like a first time applicant, is that same process next year?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:57:40 PM)
C at least one more, but may be more

Michael (ID=73) (Jan 7, 2002 9:58:09 PM)
I appreciate Candidate5600's question. And how do you view applicants with GMAT scores of 700-?

MLS (ID=71) (Jan 7, 2002 9:58:20 PM)
?Do you know the fraction of applicants that will be interviewed?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:59:03 PM)
C I have interviewed people this week with GMATs below 700 ... its an AVERAGE for admits, so clearly an equal number get below that score as above

chuck (ID=79) (Jan 7, 2002 9:59:21 PM)
?Alex: Any idea on the number that will be waitlisted in the first round?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 9:59:37 PM)
D I don't think so, I am sure next year we will modify the reapplication process

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 10:00:19 PM)
I am halfway through a three year Analyst program and will have three years of full-time LBO experience at matriculation time. I will also most likely be promoted to Associate after the three years. Since three years is at the lowwww end of years of w/e at W, should I bother applying this fall or sit on the sidelines another year?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:00:28 PM)
M about 50% will be interviewed, no interview means no admissions. C don't know re: waitlist yet, but I am sure it will be a few as this will help us assure parity between R1 and R2 which is important

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 10:01:45 PM)
Any questions...

CANDIDATE5600 (ID=75) (Jan 7, 2002 10:02:14 PM)
?Alex, this may already have been addressed. Is there any disadvantage this year in applying R2 vs. R1?

Michael (ID=73) (Jan 7, 2002 10:02:16 PM)
I heard that some international applicants, esp. those from P.R. China, their GMAT scores are deducted 50 to compare with the US applicants. Is it true?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:02:35 PM)
B the bulk of our admits have between 3 and 7 years of experience. The only downside of applying is the cost of the fee and time spent. The upside is potential success or feedback for a stronger app the following year if appropriate

Kalina (ID=51) (Jan 7, 2002 10:02:49 PM)
Are most of the companies that recruit from Wharton on the East Coast or are they all over the country (West Coast)?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:02:54 PM)
C see my wl answer! M no, never heard of that at all! btw, any more interesting rumors, they are fun to digest!

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 10:03:34 PM)
Questions anyone?

sidcc (ID=80) (Jan 7, 2002 10:03:36 PM)
How does the adcomm interpret the AWA score? Does a low AWA (3.5) warrant additional evidence of writing proficiency?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:03:51 PM)
K and the world I assume

CANDIDATE5600 (ID=75) (Jan 7, 2002 10:04:12 PM)
?Yes, one rumor is that W checks for at least 80th percentile in both quant and verbal. True/False?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:04:16 PM)
S it may, depending on the context of other info etc.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 10:04:46 PM)
Another rumor is 40 on the quant and 40 on the verbal. I can't let a good rumor go to waste. What if it's true?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:05:31 PM)
C the 80% gives us certain comfort, but it is by no means a cut-off. L we focus more on the percentile of the component scores

sacfur (ID=66) (Jan 7, 2002 10:06:23 PM)
Alex, do students who participate in the WIVP program do so in summer instead of a summer internship?

sidcc (ID=80) (Jan 7, 2002 10:06:27 PM)
How can any concerns raised by a low AWA be best dispelled? Optional essay, interview, essays, all of the above?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:06:48 PM)
S ask students on S2S I have no idea, sorry

AustinTX (ID=77) (Jan 7, 2002 10:06:53 PM)
Alex, what are some typical questions in a Wharton interview? Is there any preference between interviewing on campus or off?

mac (ID=82) (Jan 7, 2002 10:07:01 PM)
Can you offer any insight on the executive MBA program

CANDIDATE5600 (ID=75) (Jan 7, 2002 10:07:05 PM)
How important is volunteer/community work in evaluating an application? Does it have to be in a leadership capacity, or simply participating is enough.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:07:12 PM)
....and verbal GMAT score etc.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 10:07:54 PM)
I would add taking classes in English to show that you are improving your English skills. Alex, please correct me if I am wrong.\

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:08:10 PM)
participation is good, leadership is an added issue, and the whys etc are really important. L sure. B, sorry please post again? A no preference ... why did the market increase by x points this AM ...that was a joke :)

AustinTX (ID=77) (Jan 7, 2002 10:10:16 PM)
Heh...though I was back interviewing on Wall Street

wharton4me (ID=57) (Jan 7, 2002 10:10:32 PM)
?Alex, During the interview, does Wharton ask candidates what other schools they are applying to? If so, what would you like to know from this information? Thanks!

cplin1 (ID=74) (Jan 7, 2002 10:11:26 PM)
Alex, in your opinion, what makes Wharton stand out among other top schools?

Monkey (ID=48) (Jan 7, 2002 10:11:37 PM)
?Do all incoming students have to participate in the Pre-Term?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:11:58 PM)
W no, we do not care, we do care why you are applying to Wharton

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 10:12:23 PM)
alex, do you ever offer deferrals of admit offers for work reasons? for any other reasons?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:13:03 PM)
big school = breadth and depth of resources = diversity in student body = tremendous learning environment ... make sense?

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 10:13:04 PM)
If you visit the MBA Interview Feedback database you can read about previous interviews at Wharton.

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:13:39 PM)
M, I don't think it is required, but you will regret the lack of participation I am sure

bm (ID=68) (Jan 7, 2002 10:13:54 PM)
? the ? are.1). I know that u normally do not require secondary school academic record .But can I say that to strengthen my case and to show my solid academic background? 2). Can an applicant mention the faculty (and its work) in his essays to show his expectations from the Wharton?

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:14:10 PM)
B its really tough, but yes, for compelling reasons. 1 sure, but it may appear unusual to the reader so good reasons will be needed. 2, I am sure it can make sense

bm (ID=68) (Jan 7, 2002 10:15:42 PM)
? thanx for replying .

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 10:15:50 PM)
Last question.

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 10:16:48 PM)
Last question, going once, going twice.

bschool2003 (ID=61) (Jan 7, 2002 10:17:16 PM)
Alex, what about prognosticating Sandy's prediction that you won't last long in your job since you are "too honest?" (cheeky grin)

AlexBrownWharton (ID=56) (Jan 7, 2002 10:17:34 PM)
M yes, we offer feedback ... info is in the letter re: how to get it

Linda Abraham (ID=50) (Jan 7, 2002 10:17:59 PM)

B I did not hear that, and I am not sure why someone cannot be too honest (although I am reading a book on the new labor party ... )
