UCLA: There is still a decent chance to be admitted in our 4th Round. However, we do admit more candidates in the first two rounds.

Linda--the profile of students offered admission stays pretty constant throughout the process, so the chance of admission in a later round at Tepper is the same as in the earlier rounds (with the same application credentials). We have students in the program that applied in all four of our rounds.

Speaking for Darden, yes, applicants still stand a decent chance of being offered admission. I would advise, however, trying to complete your application sooner rather than later.

For all the schools: what % of total admits are from final round? Common myth is that the final round exists to add diversity, to get people from different backgrounds. Please comment.

UCLA: For Anderson it really varies from year to year. In the past, anywhere from 10 - 20% is from R4. And we do try to add diversity, of all types, from all rounds - including R4.

For Darden alone, we don't set targets in terms of the percentage of candidates to take from each round. We make the decisions based on credentials, rather than on targets. For most schools, my guess is that the percentage that is taken in the final round will vary from year to year, depending on the quality and quantity of the applicant pool.

svskr--for Tepper, we get the largest volume of applications in our 2nd round and so most admitted candidates come from that round. Our final round is much smaller in volume--but I'd estimate 15% or so come in our final round and from the waiting list.

UCLA: Not really. Your chance may be quite good if you request feedback on your application during the months of June-August in writing, and then fortify your application for the upcoming year based on this feedback.

Each year at Darden we get several applicants who were previously denied admission. It is important for denied applicants to seek feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of their applications in order to "tweek" it for the following year.

Dear GMBA, you may have seen the article on BW on-line today. Most MBA programs have experienced declines in their applicant pools. The quantity of the applicant pool at Darden has declined, but the quality is great this year.

Darden received several requests for extensions on the deadline for the last round. We thought it was fair to extend it for everyone and we still have offers of admission to grant.

UCLA: Hi, LateorFirst! I don't believe it is better to apply in the last round. I think that this year there is more of an opportunity because of a declining applicant pool and more competition. However, early applicants were able to perhaps leverage this more.

Hi LateorFirst, I think the answer will really vary from person to person - for some, the time might be right - for others, the additional time will allow for a better application and more opportunities to research the different programs.

Don't slap your application together. Take time to present the best possible application. If a school highly encourages an interview, make the investment of going to interview. It's another opportunity to "market " yourself.

UCLA: one don't that jumps to mind is to rush the essays. Don't feel that since you are in R4 you have to rush to throw "anything" together. Take time to reflect on the questions and your reasons for an MBA. Then write solid essays that will stand out.

UCLA: Couple of don'ts - I encourage the late applicant to not wait too late to apply. If there is a stated deadline, get ahead of the curve even if you only submit the application a few days before the deadline.

That's great. There's a great deal of competition among US business schools to increase their enrollments from Europe. Right now we've made 7 offers of admission to candidates from France. The fact that you're French but have also lived in the US will distinguish you!

Hi Annah - I wouldn't draw a distinction in terms of skills or qualities that you could contribute. I think they would be the same regardless of round.

Regarding VISA issues............even though we're focusing on late-round applicants, I'd apply earlier rather than any later if you're an international student. Some countries are harder than others in terms of issuing VISAs.

Linda--we work very closely with our Office of Int'l Education (OIE) to streamline the timing on our side so admitted students get their I-20s as quickly as possible. We have a very experienced admissions team member who works with individual students and OIE to get things done, provide advice, etc.

However, there may be extenuating circumstances which should be addressed in our optional essays. Also, a question will arise regarding what employment is planned following the submission of the application. Again, it is important for an applicant to utilize the optional essay to provide us with some insights.

Anjani--tough to answer that well in this format. We read all parts of the application and after the initial review invite some candidates for an interview. A second review is given by the interviewer who recommends decisions to our admission committee. We consider all aspects of the application when we make our final decision.

UCLA: Hi Ping - We don't have a preference for work experience. Some students come directly from undergrad, while others have many years of work experience. It just depends on your reasons for wanting an MBA at that particular point in your career. And of course Quality over Quantity every time.

UCLA: Deposit deadlines vary based on when you were admitted. Candidates admitted prior to March 15th have until April 15th. Candidates admitted after March 15th have 30 days to confirm their intention to enroll with a deposit.

Linda--we have a range of deposit dates, depending on when someone is admitted. Since we need to reply to candidates on the waiting list in mid- June, everyone has reply deadlines by the first week of June.

Hi Curt - at Tepper, we view each option equally. I would say the benefit to you as an applicant would be to visit, as spending the day will allow you to attend a class, meet with students, and likely get a better "feel" for the culture and community.

UCLA: Hi Joe - The R4 deadline is April 18th, and we should be setting up interviews soon thereafter as we get through applications. So it can be as early as a week or so afterwards. It just depends on when your application makes its way through the adcom.

UCLA: Hi michaeldang, April 30th is the deadline that is posted. However, there are some applicants who cannot take it by that time. Should a candidate submit a GMAT score much later than the deadline, they will not receive a guaranteed decision by the posted "Decision Mailed" date. Also, there will be fewer spaces.

UCLA: Hi Anjani. It depends on the 2nd degree, but in general you need to have both admissions during the same year if you want the joint degree to shave off one year. One of the exceptions is the JD/MBA, where you can apply to it either your first year of law school or first year at Anderson.

Anderson: Hi! Does time spent in a graduate program count as work experience?

Dawna, my wife is a medical student in George Washington University in Washington DC. I am eager to join Darden in case I get admitted because that will give me an opportunity to drive back at least once a month to visit her. Do situations like this help the applicant/application? Group from UCLA: How would you view a late-round applicant who has had success in applying to a number of schools, but now realizes he should have shot a little higher? I was concerned that my low (low) GPA was going to hurt me, and it may well do that when applying to UCLA, but I have learned quite a bit going through the process. Is this a situation that could resonate well when my application is reviewed?

UCLA: Hi Scott - we do have a waitlist at UCLA and review it regularly. As for deferring, since the nature of the applicant pool can change from year to year, we do not grant admission deferrals. The only exceptions to this policy are made for those few applicants admitted directly from undergraduate programs who want to seek work experience.

UCLA: Hi J-MO : We do not look at what other programs you have been admitted to when we review the application, so that would have no impact. There are many reasons why people apply in R4. Whatever the reason, I encourage you to make sure you put together a solid application with well written essays and good LORs. If you want to address why you applied in R4, you can always do that in the optional essay #4.

UCLA: Do's: Take time to write strong essays. Visit the campus and sit in on a class (yes, you can still do this at UCLA Anderson). Prep for the GMAT, do practice, practice, practice before taking the real deal. Think clearly about your career goals and how the MBA will help you achieve them, and further think about what resources at UCLA Anderson specifically will also assist you with the achievement of these goals. Lastly, do try to stay ahead of the crowd by getting your application in a few days before the application deadline.

Hi, to all schools: how important are recommendation letters? Must it be from some senior figure for it to have more creditability? I started a boutique hedge fund consisting of 3 partners. Would getting one of them to write my recommendation letter help? Thanks.

TC - I think, in terms of a recommendation, it's really best to select those who can best speak about your talents, experience, and leadership potential. We would much prefer this information over someone with an impressive title who can't really speak about those qualities.

UCLA: Giugv - Every applicant does add a tremendous amount to the class. Not everyone has the same background and life experiences, and this diversity enhances the learning of everybody. The students coming straight from college are the top performers and have generally been very active in their communities, clubs, and have solid summer internship experiences - all of which allows them to add to the class experience.

UCLA: Hi Ronj-fl! Essays: 1. Answer the essay question. Often applicants miss what the question is asking. 2. Allow time to reflect on the question, so preview the essay question for a few days, then begin the writing process. 3. It is often helpful to make a list of accomplishment from college on, a list of goals, and/or list of what you hope to achieve by completing an MBA. 4.Carefully edit your essays.
