Linda Abraham (Jan 11, 2006 3:59:54 PM)
How can an applicant differentiate him or herself from other candidates?
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:00:53 PM)
Leadership - breadth and depth; clear goals; clear reasons for why a particular program.
TmcE (Jan 11, 2006 4:00:56 PM)
Jackie: What is the timeline for receipt of admission decisions for
those that applied before the early deadline? Are all decisions sent on
the same day, or are they sent out on a rolling basis?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:01:16 PM)
Uniqueness of background. Tell your story.
MOHAMMED (Jan 11, 2006 4:01:34 PM)
In writing the essays, it states no more than two pages, double spaced.
Does this mean it has to be double spaced or could it also be single
spaced?
Vicky(Jan 11, 2006 4:01:44 PM)
I applied first round. What is the deadline for a reply? Who will reply, the consortium or the individual schools I applied to?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:01:50 PM)
TmcE, you should get decisions from the school around 15 Feb.
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:02:00 PM)
Mohammed, you will need to make sure that you follow the instructions with regards to the essays.
Kristen J (Jan 11, 2006 4:02:03 PM)
The Consortium Application asks for "Span of Control" for
extra-curricular activities. Does this mean we should put how many
people were involved in the activity or how many people we lead?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:02:17 PM)
TmcE, each school will give you an individual reply. That means that you will
received decisions at different times depending
on the individual schools cycles.
Laura Lee (Jan 11, 2006 4:02:23 PM)
Does the consortium application round influence the fellowship decision?
shalonne (Jan 11, 2006 4:02:38 PM)
I have a question for all the panelist. I recently took the GMAT and
did not get the score that I was hoping for. Is it acceptable for me to
submit my application for Fall 2006 consideration (Jan 15 deadline) and
then retake the GMAT in early Feb.? Do you foresee any downsides to doing
this?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:02:41 PM)
TmcE, the decisions will go out on a rolling basis based on their internal process.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:02:43 PM)
Kristen, by span of control, we mean what is the level of your responsibility, and how many people you managed.
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:03:37 PM)
Laura Lee- No, we will first make an admission decision and then a
fellowship decision. Regardless of when you apply, schools will select
the most competitive candidates for their programs.
reno3oh (Jan 11, 2006 4:03:49 PM)
Are the Consortium core essays forwarded to the specific Consortium schools? This may affect content.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:04:02 PM)
Shalonne, that question is somewhat school specific. However, you can
submit a GMAT score after the deadline, but it is preferable to have a
score in by early February.
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:04:49 PM)
reno3oh, all schools will receive the essays for the core questions.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:04:55 PM)
Shalonne, definitely check with each school regarding their GMAT policy.
Linda L. (Jan 11, 2006 4:05:07 PM)
School reps: What are some of the expectations or commitments that come with being accepted to the Consortium?
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:05:50 PM)
Linda, one of the primary commitments that comes with being accepted to the Consortium is to do well in school.
Being actively involved in your student communities - visible leaders;
also helping to recruit future generation of Consortium students.
Another commitment/expectation is giving back...to your school, to the Consortium, and to your community.
bzzyb (Jan 11, 2006 4:05:53 PM)
Jackie: I interviewed with the Consortium school of my choice already. I
want to re-take the GMAT, but the deadline for the Consortium will have
already passed. What will happen to my interview if I apply to the school
directly?
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:05:57 PM)
You can differentiate yourself by really getting to know the individual schools, and why you will be good fit!
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:05:58 PM)
reno3oh, the school specific questions will only be available to the school addressed.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:05:58 PM)
At USC, we expect that you will be a major contributor to our program.
Also, you will participate in CGSM and school related activities for
recruitment and fund raising.
TinaS (Jan 11, 2006 4:06:26 PM)
For Jennifer Kaplan- I have recently come across a few articles that
say that Stern is striving to be know not only for its strength in
the field of Finance but for General Leadership as well. Is this
accurate?
prmchorse (Jan 11, 2006 4:06:50 PM)
A question regarding the essays - In addition to the school
specific essays, will our core Consortium essays be reviewed as part of
the MBA admission process?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:02 PM)
Yes, prmchorse.
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:04 PM)
Yes, prmchorse.
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:06 PM)
bzzyb: Your interview will not be available to your ranked institutions unless you submit a
CGSM application.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:07 PM)
Yes, prmchorse.
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:10 PM)
Yes, prmchorse.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:13 PM)
Prmchorse: Yes.
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:13 PM)
Prmchorse, abosolutely!
whitenhr (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:26 PM)
For second round applicants that do not receive full
fellowships, are their applications considered for school offered
scholarships or fellowships?
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:07:28 PM)
We consider all elements of your application and the essays are very important across all schools.
Bernie (Jan 11, 2006 4:08:10 PM)
Jackie: Can you submit your application to CGSM if the person that interviewed you has not submitted an interview form?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:08:26 PM)
Whitenhr, that is definitely a school specific question. Please check with each school.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:08:30 PM)
Thanks Tina. Stern is proud of it's reputation as a top finance school.
We also have great programs in Entertainment, Media, Management,
Entrepreneurship and many many other areas. Leadership is stressed
throughout all the 22 specializations at Stern. We expect all our
students to take active leadership roles on campus and to me strong and
moral leaders after school.
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:08:40 PM)
All students are typically considered for all institutional fellowships.
AG (Jan 11, 2006 4:09:00 PM)
Can application transcripts be postmarked by Jan. 15 or must they be in the CGSM office by then?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:09:02 PM)
Bernie: absolutely. Did you take your applicant ID to the interview with you?
Hatem (Jan 11, 2006 4:09:09 PM)
How many fellowships are offered at each of the business schools?
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:09:18 PM)
AG, they can be postmarked.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:09:38 PM)
Hatem, it varies at each school each year.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:09:43 PM)
AG: we prefer you submit all materials by the deadline, but we will accept postmarks until
Jan. 17th.
Eduardo Marek (Jan 11, 2006 4:09:59 PM)
Question for Consortium Staff: Are the majority of Consortium
applicants who are accepted to their chosen schools also selected for
fellowships? Approximately, what percentage of the total applicant pool receives fellowships
in a given year?
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:09:59 PM)
Hatem- varies each year. It depends on how much money a school has designated in its school budget.
lre (Jan 11, 2006 4:10:26 PM)
What if one of my recommenders can't submit their recommendation by the deadline, but will submit it within a week after
the deadline?
TmcE (Jan 11, 2006 4:10:43 PM)
Once an admission decision is reached by the schools is it forwarded to
the Consortium, and then to the prospective student via Consortium
personnel? Or, will we receive admission decisions directly from the
schools?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:10:52 PM)
Ire, it will be fine if the recommendation comes in a week late.
SMS06 (Jan 11, 2006 4:11:02 PM)
JenniferKaplanNYU, the Consortium essay number one and the the NYU school
specific essay essentially ask why an MBA? If NYU receives the Consortium's
first essay as well as the Why NYU essay doesn't that seem
redundant?
Kristen J (Jan 11, 2006 4:11:05 PM)
Kellee, the USC and Consortium have one very similar essay
question. In the past have students answered similar essay questions for the
Consortium and USC using the same content?
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:11:31 PM)
SMS06, hopefully these essays will not be redundant. In the Stern specific
essay we are really interested in learning about your fit with Stern.
Community is a major emphasis and we hope to learn what impact we will
have on you and what impact you will leave here.
Bernie (Jan 11, 2006 4:11:41 PM)
Yes. I did take the ID to the interview
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:11:46 PM)
TmcE-you will receive an admissions decision from each of the schools that you listed in your Consortium application.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:11:54 PM)
Kristen, it is possible to have a similar answer, however, you'd like to have some unique elements for each.
DFW_SFO (Jan 11, 2006 4:12:04 PM)
General Question: On the 'Employment History' section of the
application, it asks for the number of direct reports. As a consultant,
my roles vary - sometimes working independently, sometimes supervising
10 consultants, sometimes managing a project including 35 client
personnel (part-time). What would be the correct answer for this
question? Currently I have '0-10' as my answer.
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:12:16 PM)
TmcE, admissions decisions are made solely by each individual school.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:12:41 PM)
Hi DFW_SFO, You are absolutely right,
you should use a range.
Shannon Dean (Jan 11, 2006 4:13:23 PM)
Jackie: Can all of the fellowships be taken by Round one Consortium applicants or are some reserved for
Round two?
jeremyscott (Jan 11, 2006 4:13:29 PM)
Alicia, I have an interview with Emory on the 19th. Can I use the interview for my Consortium interview?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:13:43 PM)
Jeremy,
yes, just make sure that you let the interviewer know.
TinaS (Jan 11, 2006 4:13:55 PM)
I
really felt that I had a strong application until I took the GMAT. How
important is this score to the overall application.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:14:29 PM)
TinaS, the score is important in relation to what the school is looking for in a candidate.
Quantitative is very important because we must ensure that your
skills are high enough to get through the highly quantitative rigors of
our programs.
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:14:31 PM)
Shannon- Consortium fellowship decisions are selected at the same time.
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:14:44 PM)
TinaS: The GMAT is part of the overall application and is very important taken in context.
Linda Abraham (Jan 11, 2006 4:15:14 PM)
Do the schools see the order in which applicants rank them on the fellowship application?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:15:15 PM)
Eduardo: 66% of our applicants are admitted to at least one of their choices and 85% of that group receives a fellowship.
SSimmons (Jan 11, 2006 4:15:28 PM)
What is the difference between the work experience section of the
application and the submitted resume? Should they reflect the same
skills and accomplishments or should I highlight items that did not fit
on my resume?
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:15:29 PM)
TinaS, we look at everything and assess potential from GPA, your quant
score, type of classes you took. The ranges published by the Consortium for the
GMAT are a helpful guide. Call me at 434.243.5585 if you have more questions.
Alex (Jan 11, 2006 4:15:43 PM)
The instructions say that we need to submit two required recommendations.
I have submitted the two required recommendations, but the website says
that I am still missing one required recommendation?
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:15:44 PM)
Linda - the schools do see the order in which you rank your school choices.
lre (Jan 11, 2006 4:15:55 PM)
When do you recommend sending a third recommendation letter in? Is it ever looked down upon?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:16:34 PM)
SSimmons: There is really no difference, but there is usually more room
for more details on your resume. It rounds out what is asked in the
work experience section.
Hatem (Jan 11, 2006 4:16:53 PM)
Due to time constraints I had to interview with a Consortium alumni, I
would like to visit the schools I am applying to. Should I schedule
another interview when at the schools?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:17:01 PM)
Alex: the third recommendation should support you demonstrated commitment to
diversity. That recommendation letter is optional.
bzzyb (Jan 11, 2006 4:17:20 PM)
If you took the GMAT more than once, which one do you look at. The
better score? The most recent score? Or do you average the score?
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:17:32 PM)
Hatem-that will probably vary by school. Check with the schools before you plan your visit to see if they offer interviews.
TinaS (Jan 11, 2006 4:17:37 PM)
Why are the applications sent first to the Consortium and then
forwarded to the school. Does the Consortium make recommendations on
behalf of the applicant?
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:17:46 PM)
Ire-I would encourage you to think about whether that third letter is
necessary. Ask yourself if it adds something that the others don't. If
so, it may be beneficial to include it.
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:17:49 PM)
bzzyb, we look at your highest score. We do not average your scores and taking it more than once does not hurt you.
I think Tuck may be a little different, but in general we just take the highest.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:17:49 PM)
Hatem, the CGSM application requires only one interview. If a school
wants you to interview, they will contact you. So in a nutshell, no
need to schedule another interview.
ND (Jan 11, 2006 4:18:13 PM)
To CGSM: How heavily does the admission committee weigh your GMAT score?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:18:32 PM)
TinaS: We gather the information and make the applications available
once all documents are received. We do not make admissions decisions or
recommendations.
KLE (Jan 11, 2006 4:18:55 PM)
I retook my GMAT on Jan. 9th. Is it okay that you may not
receive my score report by the 15th? Should I try to forward at least the scores
from my first crack at the GMAT to you?
TmcE (Jan 11, 2006 4:19:08 PM)
What is the average amount of work experience for Consortium applicants?
Laura Lee (Jan 11, 2006 4:19:37 PM)
Jennifer Kaplan- As a student who does not plan to study finance,
media, or entertainment, do you feel that the flexibility in class
electives allows for students to design a course load tailored to their
interests?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:19:44 PM)
KLE, send a copy of your unofficial score report. The official copy should arrive by the end of January.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:19:55 PM)
Hi Laura Lee.
There are over 20 different specializations here at Stern. You can find
a complete list and each student can choose up to three specializations
as part of your MBA program here. So you really can tailor the
curriculum to meet your exact needs. Also, you can take up to 25% of
your classes at other NYU grad schools, giving you even more
flexibility. Plus, you can find just about every industry here in NYC.
Hope that helps.
YBA (Jan 11, 2006 4:19:56 PM)
Consortium core question #1 asks about career goals. How does the
Consortium view aspiring entrepreneurs considering the fact that it has
major corporate sponsors?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:19:58 PM)
TmcE, in general, schools have an average of 5 years of work experience in their programs. It also holds
true for CGSM applicants.
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:20:06 PM)
ND-Although the GMAT is a very important factor in admissions
decisions, it is not the ONLY factor that is taken into consideration.
Can it make you sink? Yes. You should look at the class profiles of
each of the school to which you are applying so that you can benchmark
yourself.
Bernie (Jan 11, 2006 4:21:44 PM)
Can you provide some examples of topics for the optional core essay?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:21:47 PM)
YBA, each school may have different views on Entrepreneurs, but
corporations like thinkers. Entrepreneurialship is about the mindset as
well as starting a business.
Ambra (Jan 11, 2006 4:22:15 PM)
It was stated that the applicants would still be considered for
financial assistance through the university even if they do not receive
a fellowship. If the Consortium fellowships decisions are not made
until April, will this put Consortium applicants at a disadvantage in
being considered for other university financial assistance due to
timing?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:22:32 PM)
YBA: the corporations want entrepreneurs as well.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:23:13 PM)
Ambra, you should complete the application for financial aid
if you receive the fellowship or not.
Even if you get the Fellowship you will most likely need aid for living
expenses. Remember the fellowship covers required tuition and fees at most schools.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:23:14 PM)
Ambra, it is not a disadvantage for USC, but you definitely need to hear from other schools.
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:23:19 PM)
Ambra, in general, you will be able to compete for all fellowships that
a school has to offer - need based and merit. So you will not be at a
disadvantage!
Ike (Jan 11, 2006 4:23:28 PM)
The School Specific essay is somewhat similar to the first essay. I'm a bit concerned about
the redundancy.
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:23:32 PM)
Bernie: this is really a space for you to evaluate your application and
if there is anything that isn't in the core, add it here! It can be
addressing an issue, or letting us know something great about you. Some
people address a blip in GPA, an amazing leadership experience, etc.
CrystalW (Jan 11, 2006 4:23:56 PM)
Jackie: I retook the GMAT after I submitted my application to the
Consortium. I had previously arranged for my selected schools to hold
my application until my final scores were available. I have sent them to the
schools. Do I need to send to the Consortium?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:24:20 PM)
Ike: it is ok for some similarity, but do try to find unique points to
speak about in each. This is an opportunity to get around word
limitations and really tell your story.
Eduardo Marek (Jan 11, 2006 4:24:27 PM)
Question for Mrs. Scott & Mrs. Kaplan: How much emphasis is placed
on current work experience as compared to academic record? I am
confident I have top-notch unrivaled work experience but don't know how
much schools like USC & NYU focus on this compared to the GMAT and
undergrad scores.
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:24:34 PM)
CrystalW: Yes, your application will not be released to the schools until it is complete in our office.
Kristen J (Jan 11, 2006 4:25:11 PM)
I am taking the GMAT for a second time tomorrow. I will not be able to
input my AWA Score on the application as it is not instantaneous.
Should I leave that field blank on the Consortium Application?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:25:40 PM)
Yes, Kristen.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:26:03 PM)
Eduardo, we at USC look for a balance in both. We look for high levels
of responsibility and exposure to managing people. The GMAT helps us
assess if you are able to handle the quantitative rigors of the
program. Together, it gives us a holistic view of your skills.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:26:10 PM)
Eduardo, this is a completely holistic process and therefore we review
all your application materials equally. Work experience,
recommendations, essays, academic performance, personal
characteristics, etc, are all viewed equally. Play up your strengths
in the application, so they can outweigh any possible room for
improvement.
shalonne (Jan 11, 2006 4:26:40 PM)
If I retake the GMAT after the CGSM deadline do I send the score to each school or to CGSM?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:26:51 PM)
shalonne, it's best to fax your unofficial score to CGSM if it's only a week or
so, but if you are taking it any later, send your scores to both the schools and
CGSM.
Agustin (Jan 11, 2006 4:27:29 PM)
Earl, can you explain the UNC application process, since it is the only Consortium
School in which you have to fill out two applications.
Sean (Jan 11, 2006 4:28:20 PM)
How are second time Consortium applicants viewed by the Consortium and the member schools?
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:29:47 PM)
Agustin, you need to treat the application process as if you are
applying to two different institutions. Make sure you follow deadlines
and all the requirements for both UNC and the Consortium respectively.
Also, you will need to interview with a UNC rep which can also count as
your Consortium interview. In addition, you will also need to pay both
application fees. When you complete the Consortium application, make
sure you rank UNC if you want to be considered for fellowship
consideration.
vugs (Jan 11, 2006 4:29:26 PM)
Is there a maximum GMAT score for admission?
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:29:47 PM)
Agustin, you need to treat the application process as if you are
applying to two different institutions. Make sure you follow deadlines
and all the requirements for both UNC and the Consortium respectively.
Also, you will need to interview with a UNC rep which can also count as
your Consortium interview. In addition, you will also need to pay both

consideration.
Jackie (Jan 11, 2006 4:29:51 PM)
I intend on applying to Darden through the Consortium, but have not had
the opportunity to have an on campus interview. Will this hurt my
admissions consideration? I read that it was not required before
application submission. (I completed my Consortium interview at NYU).
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:29:54 PM)
Vugs, the maximum possible GMAT is 800.
Linda Abraham (Jan 11, 2006 4:30:44 PM)
Would a school be discouraged if it is placed last in the school list? Does this affect the decision?
prmchorse (Jan 11, 2006 4:31:03 PM)
To CGSM: Would you recommend that I include a cover letter with my resume?
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:31:06 PM)
Jackie: It won't hurt you at all. Just give me a shout and we can chat, but this is common
situation. 434.243.5585
TmcE (Jan 11, 2006 4:31:12 PM)
Do FAFSA forms need to be filled out in order to be eligible for the Fellowship?
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:31:45 PM)
Sean-in terms of re-applicants, prior to submitting your application, I
would encourage you to make sure you have done enough self-assessment
so that you are addressing the issues that were not present in your
previous application. If you don't, you leave the door open for an
interpretation that may not be in your best interest.
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:31:51 PM)
prmchorse: No, you should not submit a cover letter.
Ben (Jan 11, 2006 4:31:56 PM)
My CGSM interviewer hasn't submitted my review yet. As far as
the deadline is concerned, how lenient are you all with this section of
the application?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:32:00 PM)
If a school is ranked last, it only discouraging to the point that if
we really like you, we may not be able to offer you the CGSM
scholarship. It should not affect whether or not you are admitted.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:32:01 PM)
TmcE, no FAFSA forms do not need to be filled out to be eligible for the
fellowship. However, if you want to be considered for federal aid, please fill it out by the Feb. 15th deadline.
Hatem (Jan 11, 2006 4:32:24 PM)
If a school places a candidate on the waitlist will they still be considered for a fellowship?
ND (Jan 11, 2006 4:32:57 PM)
Thanks Lawrence...After taking the KAPLAN class, getting a tutor, and taking the
exam twice I still got below average score. Very discouraging but I don't want
not to apply because of that. I know I really don't do well in standardize test.
How can I show that on my application?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:33:19 PM)
TmcE, the Consortium Fellowship is merit-based and not needs-based.
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:33:25 PM)
Ben: the interview will not prevent us from forwarding your application to ranked schools.
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:33:30 PM)
Hatem- You will not be considered for a fellowship until you are
offered admission. It is possible if you are admitted from the waitlist
to still be considered for money (if it is still available).
CrystalW (Jan 11, 2006 4:33:43 PM)
Jackie: My first round of scores were submitted with my application and
my status states: "Released to Schools." Do I need to send the updated
scores?
Ire (Jan 11, 2006 4:33:48 PM)
If your GMAT score isn't as high as you would like it to be, do you think you should address it in the optional essay?
Laura Lee (Jan 11, 2006 4:34:04 PM)
Jennifer, I am scheduled to be in the NY
area mid-February. Can I contact the school directly if I have not heard
from the adcom? On a positive note, what is the earliest date in which
NYU Stern will conduct interviews?
Jackie (Jan 11, 2006 4:34:30 PM)
When applying to more than one school, say USC & NYU, will the USC adcom be able to see the school specific essay for NYU as well. Or
will each school only see the base 3 essays plus their own school
specific?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:34:42 PM)
Ire, it's good to address it in the optional essay, and point out other
parts of the application that you feel are strong enough to balance
your complete application.
TiGuy (Jan 11, 2006 4:35:08 PM)
Are applicants with little work experience--say 2 years or less--at a disadvantage when it comes to getting admitted?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:35:15 PM)
CrystalW: I am assuming you sent us your previous score. If that is the
case, we released you application using the previous score. Send us a
copy of the new scores for our internal records.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:35:27 PM)
Jackie, we only see our school's essay. I will not see the school essay you send
to Stern.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:35:30 PM)
Laura Lee, my pleasure. You can certainly contact me directly with any
questions. Just send me an email so I can check your status. Of course,
if we invite you to interview it would be great to time it during your
visit. Also, we have already sent a small number of interview
invitations.
Hatem (Jan 11, 2006 4:35:30 PM)
AliciaSierra- What is the single most important factor in the admission process at Emory?
Medhanie Estiphanos (Jan 11, 2006 4:35:48 PM)
Many schools allow you to automatically apply for all fellowships or
financial assistance that they offer with the submittal of your MBA
application. This is not the case with USC, NYU or other CGSM member
schools, correct?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:35:53 PM)
Hi Hatem.
If I had to chose one, it would be leadership.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:36:05 PM)
Medhanie, at NYU we do not have separate scholarship forms. So, anyone who
applies to NYU Stern with the Stern application or Consortium
application is considered for merit scholarships. Priority is given to
those applying by the first deadline.
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:36:07 PM)
ND-As I mentioned in an earlier response, the GMAT isn't the only
factor that is considered in the admissions decision. We take into
consideration: professional work experience, leadership, focus and
clarity of thought on your goals and objectives in relation to
attaining the MBA (your essays), and interview, letters of
recommendation, and your academic record. If you want to discuss your case in
particular, feel free to contact me via email.
Mike De la Rosa (Jan 11, 2006 4:36:17 PM)
Hi Kellee. I'm very familiar with Marshall having gone there for
undergrad. What direction does the MBA program see itself heading in?
bzzyb (Jan 11, 2006 4:36:29 PM)
Is it possible to apply through the Consortium even though you plan to take the
GMAT after the deadline? If so, what is the latest date you can take it
to qualify?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:36:31 PM)
Mike, we are going no where but up!
SMS06 (Jan 11, 2006 4:36:37 PM)
If an applicant is planning to retake the GMAT after the deadline should they state this in the
optional essay?
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:36:40 PM)
Tiguy- This is somewhat school specific, but it is very possible for
someone with 2 years or less to gain admission. You need to make sure
that you frame your experience (whatever it is) as substantive. YOU
need to make the case. Take every opportunity - essays, interviews and
recommendations to help make the case.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:36:52 PM)
Hatem, you can demonstrate leadership through your co-curricular activities in college,
as well as any community organizations that you are involved in as well. Of course we will look at your academic record and GMAT along with that.
AG (Jan 11, 2006 4:37:04 PM)
For school reps - if we have a Master's degree already, what GPA will be focused upon more closely, undergrad or grad?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:37:11 PM)
bzzyb and sms06: You want to take the test no later than 31 January.
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:37:21 PM)
Medhanie: Generally that is true, we will consider you for all
available diversity scholarships/fellowships and aid and general aid as
well. Just check upon admission and ask if you need to
submit anything to be considered for specific fellowships or financial
aid.
YBA (Jan 11, 2006 4:37:24 PM)
Good point! I understand entrepreneurship is a mindset and is valued at
corporations. How about those aspiring entrepreneurs, who desire to
create new business ventures that could one day become a corporation?
Tglenn (Jan 11, 2006 4:37:38 PM)
At what point does an applicants age begin to become a hindrance to his/her full time MBA prospects?
vugs (Jan 11, 2006 4:38:17 PM)
What is average GMAT score to secure a place in a school like USC, Emory, CMU,
etc.?
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:38:19 PM)
AG-We take a look at your entire academic record...undergraduate, graduate, and
all other college level coursework.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:38:40 PM)
Hi Vugs. Please look at
the individual profiles on each school's website.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:38:43 PM)
YBA; it's not a problem. Usually, it is worth it to work for a company
after your MBA because you see and make decisions at a higher level.
This will give you a more solid foundation if you are interested in
starting your own business.
MM (Jan 11, 2006 4:38:45 PM)
If I am applying to two schools through the consortium, is it best to try
to set up interviews with representatives from both schools?
MOHAMMED (Jan 11, 2006 4:38:58 PM)
CGSM - I was of the impression if a school admitted you, your tuition was taken care of? Please clarify.
DFW_SFO (Jan 11, 2006 4:39:17 PM)
General Question: When previewing my application in .pdf format, the
text seems a bit 'messy.' Is this simply the 'preview', or does it accurately
portray a finished application? Do I need to be concerned?
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:39:24 PM)
Tglenn: Age shouldn't be at all a factor in the general sense in terms
of having a game plan for where you want to go. For example we have a
consortium fellow here at Darden who is over 40 and has 6 kids!
Lorie (Jan 11, 2006 4:39:38 PM)
KelleeScottUSC--Can you explain why a school couldn't offer a CGSM scholarship if they were ranked last. Thanks in advance.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:39:51 PM)
Mohammed, you can be admitted but not be offered any fellowships from
the schools. There is a three step decision process: admission, CGSM
qualification, and finally, fellowship consideration.
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:40:07 PM)
dfw_sfo: iI is partially a preview issue but make sure you follow the guidelines
for each section.
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:40:08 PM)
MM, It is always best to visit the schools to see if you are a good fit
and you like the environment, but it is not necessary to interview at
both schools. Just like the Consortium common application - schools
share the common interview evaluation.
Curtis Jewell (Jan 11, 2006 4:40:38 PM)
I graduated from an
American university, but also attended a school in Japan for 5 months
during undergrad. CGSM should have my US transcript by now, but the
Japanese transcripts I ordered weeks ago haven't arrived yet (at least,
not the one I ordered for myself as a backup). If my Japanese
transcript arrives after the deadline (or was lost in the mail), how
will this affect my application?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:41:25 PM)
Lorie, to clarify, you can only hold one CGSM fellowship at a time, so
if your number one school offers it, other schools cannot. However, a
school is not prevented from offering a fellowship or other aid that is
school based. It just cannot be deemed a CGSM fellowship.
Hatem (Jan 11, 2006 4:41:35 PM)
Alicia, what is the minimum GMAT and GPA that the Emory admissions board will consider?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:41:52 PM)
Curtis, we need the transcript from Japan but it will not delay your application
from being forwarded to the schools.
Eduardo Marek (Jan 11, 2006 4:42:08 PM)
Kellee, I went to USC and majored in Business
Administration. I have heard that many schools do not like applicants
coming from the same school's undergrad program and that this is seen
negatively. Is this true?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:42:11 PM)
Hatem, we really like to see you within or close to the range on our GMAT and
GPA.
MM (Jan 11, 2006 4:42:41 PM)
Earl - what if I feel my interview with the first school was not my best?
DFW_SFO (Jan 11, 2006 4:43:16 PM)
Some schools require additional forms for institutional financial aid
(through corporate partners, etc). Do we need to contact the individual
schools to fill-out the additional forms NOW in the case we are
admitted but do not receive the Consortium Fellowship?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:43:19 PM)
Eduardo, that is not true. Sure it's nice to vary your experiences, but
if your undergrad school is still the school for you, so be it! Loyalty
is often rewarded!
lre (Jan 11, 2006 4:43:25 PM)
Alicia Sierra, I have been told that schools like to see when alum or
current students write short recommendation letters on your behalf. I'm
applying to Emory through the Consortium. Should I send this type of
letter to Emory directly or submit it in my Consortium application? Or
not submit it at all?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:43:40 PM)
MM, the admissions decision is based on your entire application.
vugs (Jan 11, 2006 4:43:47 PM)
Kellee, having looked at school's catalogue, it has a program that I
have always died to do - real estate. I cannot only hope to get
admitted. I am not very happy with my GMAT score. What advice can you
offer?
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:43:56 PM)
MM, it is fine to interview at a second school for that individual school if you feel the need.
Jackie (Jan 11, 2006 4:43:57 PM)
Are the school specific
essays a two page max as well? Is it ok if those essays go a little over?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:43:59 PM)
Hi Ire, if it is going to be a short note from one of our alums, you can send it to us directly.
SMS06 (Jan 11, 2006 4:44:08 PM)
I've heard that taking pre-MBA classes are favored by admissions
officers because it shows that the applicant has been diligent about
preparing for applying to b-school. Does being apart of MLT hold the
same consideration?
MOHAMMED (Jan 11, 2006 4:44:25 PM)
Jackie - As a follow up to Curtis's question, if you are unable to
contact the foreign school but already had your grades transferred to
your graduated college, can your application still be disqualified?
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:44:38 PM)
DRW_SFO: In addition to completing the FAFSA (www.fafsa.gov), you will
want to check with each your school are you applying to for specific
protocols regarding school-based aid.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:44:45 PM)
vugs, if you desire to re-take, email me with your intentions so I'll
know that you will be retaking. Once you complete the test, fax in your
unofficial scores, and be sure to send them to CGSM as well.
Vicky(Jan 11, 2006 4:44:53 PM)
When should I hear back from my schools if I applied
first round to the Consortium? What is the deadline?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:45:07 PM)
Vicky,
you should be hearing from each school very soon. It just depends on the cycle at the individual school.
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:45:09 PM)
Jackie: I'd stick to the two pages. We read all the essays and part of
the evaluation is your writing skill and ability to be succinct and
articulate! Hope that helps.
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:45:15 PM)
Mohammed: We need a transcript from every institution attended. As previously
posted, it will not delay your application from being forwarded to the schools
but it may delay admission decisions.
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:45:16 PM)
SMS06- We all love to see MLT students and value the training and exposure that students receive during this program.
bzzyb (Jan 11, 2006 4:45:31 PM)
If my GMAT was not in the school's 80% range, do you recommend retaking
the test and applying to school directly in later rounds or is it
better to apply now with the lower GMAT score?
Curtis Jewell (Jan 11, 2006 4:45:36 PM)
Thanks Jackie.
MOHAMMED (Jan 11, 2006 4:46:26 PM)
Dia - Do the essays have to be double spaced?
Jackie (Jan 11, 2006 4:46:30 PM)
Thanks everyone. Your answers have been very helpful.
Medhanie Estiphanos (Jan 11, 2006 4:46:40 PM)
I may be missing an oblivious answer, but I'm curious as to why the CGSM requires a photo as a part of it's application process.
Mike De la Rosa (Jan 11, 2006 4:46:59 PM)
Jennifer: One of the big trends at the top MBA programs seems to be
programs specifically designed at developing leadership. What is NYU
doing in this regard?
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:47:09 PM)
Mohammed: yes, we ask for double spacing because we are old and our eyes are bad!
Just a joke. Only Earl Granger is old.
CamilleWinfrey (Jan 11, 2006 4:47:29 PM)
Alicia: Is Emory looking into developing an Entertainment/Media concentration?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:47:38 PM)
Hi Camille, yes, we are currently developing a Entertainment/Media concentration.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:47:40 PM)
Hi Mike. We believe strongly in leadership development. As I mentioned earlier,
it is not a hope, but rather an expectation that students get involved with
leadership here on campus. We also have a number of great NYC initiatives for
students to get involved in to expand leadership, including the Stern Consulting
Corp, etc. Check out the innovative curriculum section of our web for more, or
drop me an email.
MOHAMMED (Jan 11, 2006 4:47:45 PM)
Thanks.
DonJ (Jan 11, 2006 4:48:26 PM)
Alicia, if we have already completed a consortium interview but would
like to visit the school, what's the best way to contact your office?
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:48:40 PM)
bzzyb: That is a decision only you can make based on the rest of your
application. Again, the GMAT isn't the sole determining factor in
admissions (unless you fall out of the school's range).
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:48:49 PM)
Medhanie: we require the photo for our faces book that we publish for the orientation program.
There is a short window between fellowship notification and our print deadline,
so we ask for the professional photo up front. REMEMBER: PROFESSIONAL PHOTO, not
something taken with a cell phone while you were on the beach.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:48:52 PM)
Call our office at 404-727-6311.
ND (Jan 11, 2006 4:48:59 PM)

lre (Jan 11, 2006 4:49:05 PM)
Thank you, Alicia!
Alex (Jan 11, 2006 4:49:12 PM)
Where should we address what we bring to the school--in the why MBA essay or in the school specific essay?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:49:17 PM)
Hi ND. Emory has a strong international business concentration. It is
actually called global business. Check it out on our website.
CrystalW (Jan 11, 2006 4:49:20 PM)
I am very excited about the application process and want to stay in

What are the benefits of membership, other than the fellowships?
EarlGrangerUNC (Jan 11, 2006 4:49:56 PM)
CrystalW - Stalking is too much contact. Use good judgment.
Hatem (Jan 11, 2006 4:50:22 PM)
B. Dia Draper and Alicia Sierra I will be visiting your schools in the next month.
Should I schedule an interview while I am there?
ND (Jan 11, 2006 4:50:33 PM)
Thanks Alicia!
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:50:43 PM)

AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:50:53 PM)
Hatem, absolutely!
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:51:04 PM)

Kellee, does Marshall have a good long term contract with Pete, the career placement guy? :-)
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:51:38 PM)

CamilleWinfrey (Jan 11, 2006 4:51:47 PM)
Alicia: Will the entertainment/media concentration be in place by Fall 2006?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:52:01 PM)
Hi Camille,
Linda Abraham (Jan 11, 2006 4:52:10 PM)
What is the most common mistake applicants make?
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:52:15 PM)
Camille,
I have not seen the final time line, but it is possible.
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:52:30 PM)
Linda: not proof reading is the most common mistake I've seen.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:52:43 PM)
Linda, a common mistake applicants make is scheduling too many interviews, and not succinctly answering the essay questions.
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:53:13 PM)
All-some of the benefits other than the Fellowship include: the
opportunity to attend the Orientation Program, interactions with
companies who are committed to inclusion and diversity, a strong alumni
network, a strong network of Consortium students at other schools, and
the opportunity to give back to your community.
Ben (Jan 11, 2006 4:53:14 PM)
JenifferKaplan: I'm aiming for the Jan15th deadline, but I am retaking
the GMAT on Feb13th. Should I forward my score directly to Stern?
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:53:22 PM)
Linda, applicants need to really be sure to answer the questions ASKED.
brown12 (Jan 11, 2006 4:53:31 PM)
What are the top criteria the consortium looks at to
grant fellowships (once the applicant successfully gets admission at a
school of his/her choice)?
Medhanie Estiphanos (Jan 11, 2006 4:53:50 PM)
Jennifer, NYU and USC are my top two choices. I completed the CGSM
interview at USC; however, I do want every opportunity to present
myself well with the NYU adcom, so would it be helpful for me to
schedule an interview with them as well? Thanks.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:53:50 PM)
Ben, send your score to the Consortium and to Stern directly and keep me updated.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:54:04 PM)
Medhanie, great to learn of your interest in NYU Stern. We hold interviews by
invitation only after reviewing applications. However, you should
certainly try to get to know Stern by visiting campus, speaking with
current students, etc. You can also contact me directly if you have
questions!
Lorie (Jan 11, 2006 4:54:21 PM)
Dia: What is the latest date that you'll
accept a re-submitted GMAT score? Same question for Kellee.
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:54:25 PM)
I think a common mistake is not visiting the schools before making a decision.
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:54:27 PM)
Brown12, it is school specific for more details, but in general, high academics,
competitive GMAT scores, upward progression on work experience and the ability
to contribute to our environment.
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:54:32 PM)
Common mistake: Inadequate preparation time for the application. It is
challenging to complete the application process (letters of recommendation,
essays, etc.) while studying for and taking the GMAT.
Alex (Jan 11, 2006 4:54:36 PM)
Do the essays need to be 12 point font?
Ben (Jan 11, 2006 4:54:42 PM)
Thanks Jennifer and I will.
BDiaDraperDarden (Jan 11, 2006 4:54:48 PM)
Lorie: I'd say (only speaking for Darden) probably Feb 1.
bzzyb (Jan 11, 2006 4:55:03 PM)
Have you seen an increase or decrease in qualified applicants from underrepresented backgrounds?
LC (Jan 11, 2006 4:55:18 PM)
Greetings Kellee Scott! I have applied to USC through the Consortium
during the earlier round and I have a couple queries for you: 1) What
is the single most important factor in the admissions process at
Marshall? 2) In your opinion, what are the strengths and weakness of
the Marshall MBA program compare to its competition?
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:55:21 PM)
Alex: 10 or 12 font size.
Linda Abraham (Jan 11, 2006 4:55:41 PM)
Any last tips from all the panelists for applicants?
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:55:56 PM)
LC, you can email me offline at kscott@marshall.usc.edu. This one is too long for the chat.
JenniferKaplanNYU (Jan 11, 2006 4:56:04 PM)
Maybe not a tip Linda, but best wishes to all!!!!
AliciaSierraEmory (Jan 11, 2006 4:56:10 PM)

DFW_SFO (Jan 11, 2006 4:56:32 PM)
All: Thanks to everyone for taking the time to chat and for the emails
with offers to answer questions. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I
say we appreciate your efforts!
KelleeScottUSC (Jan 11, 2006 4:56:39 PM)
To All; understand what you're getting into and be prepared for a wonderful experience at any CGSM school!
JackieOldenConsortium (Jan 11, 2006 4:56:44 PM)
Please submit your application no later than midnight (PT) 15 January.
LawrenceMurrayKelley (Jan 11, 2006 4:57:02 PM)
bzzyb-Last year, business schools across the board experience a
decrease in MBA applications. Obviously that was reflected in the
number of MBA applications for underrepresented applicants as well. As
far as this year goes, it really is too early in the process to make an
accurate assessment. I think if anything, we are looking at the same
size application pool as last year.
Linda Abraham (Jan 11, 2006 4:57:19 PM)
