Linda Abraham (Mar 14, 2007 4:01:45 PM)
1. What is the appropriate use of the optional essay?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:02:20 PM)
There is no advantage to writing the optional essay and each year very few
students actually need to write the optional essay. Let me give you some
examples of when to use this essay and when not to use this essay. Remember that
the optional essay should only be used to include relevant information that
could not be provided elsewhere on the application. Note that the question
specifies that you may include information that "is important for the admissions
committee to assess your candidacy." The most common use of this essay is to
explain why you answered yes to any one, or both, of the questions under Conduct
and Certification of Information section. It is probably obvious to everyone
that if you had been expelled or suspended or convicted of a criminal offense,
this information would be important to the Admissions Committee in assessing
your candidacy.
Another appropriate use would be to explain gaps in your education. For example, if you took 3 years off after high school before attending college, this information would be apparent to the AdComm
during their review as you would be older than most of the other applicants.
Instead of making us wonder about what you were doing for 3 years and why you
didn't go to college right out of high school, you could give a brief
explanation in the Optional Essay.
Here are 3 reasons not to write the optional essay: 1. Writing about something that could have been covered in Essay 1, 2 or 3 then this is not appropriate for the Optional Essay. 2. Telling about a situation that showcases your personality is not the best use of the Optional Essay. 3. Explaining one low grade when you have a GPA higher than 3.3. Of course this does not mean that everyone should explain a low grade if your GPA is below 3.3. Use your best judgment given the information provided above.
Linda Abraham (Mar 14, 2007 4:03:08 PM)
2. Essay 1 asks, ‘Why do you want to come to the Ross School of Business?’ Should I write about my career goals for the future?
knows11 (Mar 14, 2007 4:05:07 PM)
How strict is the 500 word limit on the essays?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:05:28 PM)
In response to the Essay 1 question...The AdComm does not expect that you really know what you want to do when you graduate. We recognize that you are new to college and that this is a time for you to explore your interests. If you came to any of the Careers Sessions, you probably heard the current BBA Seniors say that they didn’t know what career they wanted or what subject interested them the most and that is perfectly ok. We really want to know why you want to come...it is that simple. A theme that you will hear over and over again about the essay questions is that the real, honest answer is very apparent when reading an essay and oftentimes, these are the most succinct and well-written essays.
You can assume that the AdComm knows all about the program, the reputation (rankings), the educational approach, etc. Hence, do not waste space on explaining what Ross has but, rather, focus on why you want to come…hey, isn’t that what the question asks?
Linda Abraham (Mar 14, 2007 4:06:17 PM)
3. Essay 2 states, ‘The BBA Program requires excellent teamwork skills and there are many group projects in the curriculum. Tell us about a group or team experience from college that either went very well or that ended badly. In retrospect, would you have done anything differently? Please tell us why or why not.’ Is it better to choose an experience that went very well or one that ended badly?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:06:36 PM)
To respond to the 500 word limit, we will not be counting words. Use your best judgment. A half-page would be too short and one-page is just about right. There are instructions on the application for font and spacing...so use those
AA (Mar 14, 2007 4:06:56 PM)
What is the average GPA that U of Michigan is looking for?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:07:54 PM)
In response to the Essay 2 question, it doesn't matter which one you choose as
long as you are specific in answering the actual question of why or why not you
would have or would not have done anything differently. It might help to think
about the experience from which you learned the most.
Obviously you should be using an actual example (the fake answers are very easy to detect) so the quality of your answer will depend on the specifics and not whether or not the experience was positive or negative.
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:08:15 PM)
The average GPA for the class last year was 3.6...but we look at the application in its entirety. No one piece is more important (weighted more) than the other.
Another note on GPA...we are not looking for a specific GPA...the middle 80th percentile was 3.3 to 3.8 last year
Jamie (Mar 14, 2007 4:10:02 PM)
For the awards and distinctions section of the application do you want any awards we received in high school or just the summer previous to our freshman year here at the UM and during our freshman year?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:10:41 PM)
Jamie...The application specifically requests that you only list activities in the last 11 months, or since you graduated from high school. Hence, a summer job is appropriate for this section but high school wrestling is not. If you are a sophomore or junior (or senior), you may reference activities since you began college. If you are a non-traditional student (e.g., you took time off between high school and college or perhaps you started college then went to work and are now returning to college), you may reference activities in the past few years. Note that you are only able to list 7 but we do not expect that the majority of the applicants will have 7 activities given their short tenure in college.
KevinG (Mar 14, 2007 4:10:47 PM)
I am a Sophomore transfer student from LaSalle University and was wondering when I should send my transcript and also if this Spring
semester would be taken into account for admission?
KevinG (Mar 14, 2007 4:11:18 PM)
When will I be able to submit my application online?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:11:55 PM)
KevinG...send the transcript asap...Spring Semester will not be considered because we will have completed the decisions by that time
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:12:33 PM)
Kevin G...we are still testing data for the application. Use this time to double check you information and review your essays...there is no advantage to
submitting your application early
mcs212 (Mar 14, 2007 4:12:40 PM)
When asked to 'list up to 5 distinctions, honors, or awards for professional or academic achievement or community service', how far back can these awards be dated? High School? Since coming to the University?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:13:03 PM)
MCS212,
The application specifically requests that you only list awards earned in the last 11 months, or since you graduated from high school. However, if you got a full-ride scholarship to attend a different university then this would be appropriate in this section. You will also note that there are options to choose to let the AdComm know that you received a scholarship to attend U of M. If you are a sophomore or junior (or senior), you may reference awards since you began college. If you are a non-traditional student (e.g., you took time off between high school and college or perhaps you started college then went to work and are now returning to college), you may reference awards in the past few years. Note that you are only able to list 5 but we do not expect that the majority of the applicants will have 5 awards given their short tenure in college.
rjd (Mar 14, 2007 4:13:11 PM)
In the awards section of the application, would you recommend if an applicant has 3 different awards from one competition to list them separately as 3 different awards, or to somehow consolidate them as one?
ice (Mar 14, 2007 4:13:22 PM)
Do I have to wait until the evaluation of the courses I am taking to be sent back to me before I can send my application?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:13:57 PM)
Ice...what do you mean by 'evaluation'? Does this mean your grade?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:14:05 PM)
rjd....go ahead and list them separately as 3 different awards
Linda Abraham (Mar 14, 2007 4:14:21 PM)
Essay 3 states, ‘Using an example from your college experience-aside from classes and class work-please tell us what activity is most important to you and why. Please use a different example from the one used in Question 2.’ Does this mean you want to know what I do in my free time?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:14:40 PM)
In response to the Essay 3 question, one key to this question is to note that it is singular and asks ‘what activity’. You only have 500 words so you should be sure to answer the actual question being asked. Some students might make the mistake of giving the highlights of a typical day of activities rather than telling the AdComm what activity is most important and why.
ice (Mar 14, 2007 4:15:27 PM)
Do I have to send in the mid-term grade?
dani7 (Mar 14, 2007 4:15:31 PM)
I have a question about a transfer credit. When I looked at the transfer equivalency chart for Alpena Community College, my calculus course MTH 130 transfers to the MTH dpt, but not as MTH 115. Who can I talk to about this, and does this mean that I do not qualify for admission due to the pre-requisite?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:16:04 PM)
Ice...no need to send mid-term grades
Briarhill (Mar 14, 2007 4:16:41 PM)
On the activities list, do you want them written in resume format (starting sentences with verbs) or complete sentence format?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:17:05 PM)
Dani7...Unfortunately, if it is not listed on the Transfer Equivalency page then it does not transfer.
This page is updated regularly by the Math department so it is the most recent list.
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:17:26 PM)
Briarhill...Either sentences or bullets are fine. The format isn’t as important as the actual content. Think of this section as an opportunity to highlight your accomplishments in that specific Extracurricular Activity. Remember that actual accomplishments have more impact than future plans. We would much prefer to read about what you have already achieved than what you plan to do next summer or next year.
AA (Mar 14, 2007 4:18:43 PM)
Like many other schools offer, does UMich has a special dept for student to apply with a disability if it could have affected their past career?
Does the university take into account if a student has a disability which has affected his/her life in the past?
mphs06 (Mar 14, 2007 4:20:18 PM)
If you mention something in your first essay about an activity that has lead you to making your decision to apply to the BBA program, along with other information, is it okay to use the same activity, but explain a greater aspect of it for the third essay (realizing that the 2nd and 3rd essays must be completely different)?
knows11 (Mar 14, 2007 4:21:58 PM)
Should the essay have color, creativity, or any comedic aspects?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:22:16 PM)
AA...it all depends. You will want to email RossBBA@umich.edu with this specific question. The University of Michigan has a multitude of student resources and we can help decipher which may or may not apply to your case.
Linda Abraham (Mar 14, 2007 4:23:07 PM)
I would say don't try to be funny, colorful, or creative; be genuine. You may end up being funny, colorful, and creative.
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:23:46 PM)
MPHS06...you should be sure that Essay 2 and 3 use different examples as the question states.
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:23:49 PM)
knows11....we can always appreciate creativity and comedic aspects. However, we caution that you don't try to frame an essay around humor. If in doubt, always stick to just answering the question.
rjd (Mar 14, 2007 4:23:51 PM)
What is the exact date do we hear about acceptances and by what means (email, mail)? Also, is there a wait-list?
AA (Mar 14, 2007 4:23:54 PM)
Does UMich look down upon a student if he/she has taken classes at a community college in the state of Florida?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:25:39 PM)
rjd...you will informed June 22 via email (the only caveat is for a transfer student for who we may not have received the transcript yet). There is no wait-list.
scooter (Mar 14, 2007 4:25:47 PM)
My one question is that I have a few awards, all for my GPA. After I name the specific award, should I write GPA, academic achievement, or the specific factor that got me the award, when I am listing my basis for selection?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:26:09 PM)
AA...the AdComm is looking at every transfer student's academic rigor in
comparison to every other student in the pool of applicants, including UM-A2
students. There is no disadvantage just because a student is coming from a community college but you should know that you will be competing with every other student in the pool so a solid academic performance will be critical.
dani7 (Mar 14, 2007 4:26:12 PM)
Can I send in a syllabus to be reviewed since MTH 130 is the same class as the other calc course that does transfer only in a business format?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:26:22 PM)
scooter....please list the specific factor for which you earned the award.
ice (Mar 14, 2007 4:26:27 PM)
It said in the instructions of the application to send in course descriptions of the prerequisite courses to confirm that they will transfer. I have filled out an evaluation sheet as directed on the website, since my college is not listed in the Transfer Equivalency page. Do I have to wait until I receive the evaluations of the courses before I can send my application?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:29:26 PM)
ice...no, you do not have to wait until you receive the evaluations on the course before sending the application. We review those. You will not receive an evaluation...just an admission decision from us.
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:30:22 PM)
Dani7...if your course is not listed on the Transfer Equivalency page then you should send in the appropriate materials for review. They will be evaluated as part of your application and you will receive your decision at the same time as everyone else.
BBAorBust (Mar 14, 2007 4:30:58 PM)
In essay 3, should we also highlight what have we accomplished with the activity that has meant the most to us? or is it strictly WHY it is important?
dani7 (Mar 14, 2007 4:31:49 PM)
The transfer guide says that U of M does not accept credits after 60 credits completed. Does that mean they don't accept credits taken after 60 credits have been achieved at the current school or just that they don't accept more than 60 total?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:32:29 PM)
dani7...the maximum number of transfer credits the Business School will accept is 45.
Linda Abraham (Mar 14, 2007 4:32:33 PM)
Under the languages section, it asks me to indicate my level of proficiency as fair, good, or excellent. What does this mean?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:33:13 PM)
BBAorBust...the entire question is important. You should answer the exact question being
asked so the 'why' should be addressed.
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:33:24 PM)
If you are fluent in a language (you could hold down a full-time job or study full-time in that language), you should choose excellent. If you can have everyday conversations with native speakers, order food, read transportation signs, go shopping and ask directions in that language, you should choose good. If you have only taken a few language classes and are unable to use the language as described above, then you should choose fair.

Linda Abraham (Mar 14, 2007 4:34:48 PM)
Can I submit my resume, letters of recommendation, portfolio, photo, video, etc. to the Office of Admissions at Ross to be added to my application?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:35:12 PM)
AA...from the stats, there was a 46.7% admission rate
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:35:36 PM)
In response to Linda's question....The only supplemental materials that will be added to your application are official transcripts or course descriptions/syllabus for courses not listed on the Transfer Equivalencies page for students wanting to transfer to Ross. You should not send any other materials as they will not be considered.
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:35:50 PM)
mcs212....its actually neither in this particular case. What you would do is select "Club" as the activity type and then indicate "President" in the position section. From there, you can use the description box to list exactly what you did as President of club/committee

Suppose a student was coming out after switching from a year of architecture but did business courses like economics and maths in high school,
would she be eligible to apply?
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:38:41 PM)
Khadija...you are eligible to apply if you have taken the pre-requisites listed in the application and will have completed them by the end of this current semester.
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:39:07 PM)
AA...the pre-requisites (listed on the BBA website) for the BBA program are
required to be completed or in progress at the time of application.

From the past, a student coming from a CC with an AA (completed 64 credits) what
GPA would the program be looking for?
ice (Mar 14, 2007 4:40:46 PM)
For the college transcript, I have sent the transcript that has grades until Fall 2006. However, I have realized that I should have sent the transcript after I have completed my Spring 2007 semester. Should I resend another college transcript after I complete this semester? Will it affect review of my application?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:41:59 PM)
AA...if you are coming from a CC, you should have a very strong GPA. Generally for transfer students, we look to see if you would likely have been admissible to the University of Michigan as well since you are competing with UofM students.
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:44:01 PM)
ice....yes, send your Spring 2007 semester transcript as soon as its available.
knows11 (Mar 14, 2007 4:44:11 PM)
Is there expected to be an increase in applicants this year?
rjd (Mar 14, 2007 4:44:27 PM)
Ross is looking for students who are well-rounded in all aspects - therefore, the activities, essays, and awards should depict this. If an applicant has more than 5 awards - should they choose 5 that show a variety (academic, service, professional - and what exactly is a professional award (a business competition award)?) or 5 that are academic related since college?
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:45:02 PM)
knows11...yes, there seems to be a slight increase each year.
MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:46:04 PM)
Slydiggity...since our application review process has always been a comprehensive one based on many quantitative and qualitative criteria, I don't see the law impacting the way we review applications. We are always looking for diversity in background, interests and skills.
astephani (Mar 14, 2007 4:46:27 PM)

MicheleThompsonBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:47:18 PM)
Astephani...Unfortunately, you do not qualify to apply for our program. You must have completed 27
transferable credits by the second semester of your college career.
ErikaBuschBBA (Mar 14, 2007 4:47:49 PM)
rjd...use the awards that you think are the strongest. It doesn't necessarily need to be a variety. Yes, a business competition award would qualify as a professional award.

One note to everyone about the college term terminology. At UM A2, we have Fall 2006, which starts in September ends in December and Winter 2006, which starts in January and ends in April. Our Spring 2007 term starts in May. When I indicated earlier that we will not consider Spring term courses, I was referring to the UM A2 Spring 2007.

Please feel free to take advantage of any of our resources. I would like to highlight the Accepted Admissions Almanac, our blog at http://blog.accepted.com , and Accepted’s Odd ‘N Ends, our monthly newsletter at http://www.accepted.com/Newsletter/Default.aspx . Either one will keep you abreast of admissions trends and provide you with periodic tips and advice that will help your applications shine.
