Linda, thanks for hosting us. Hello everyone.  I am from Eureka, CA and worked in the medical device industry for ~seven years prior to Wharton.  I am doing one of Wharton's dual degree programs- the Lauder program- which is a 24 month MBA and MA in international studies with a focus on one of eight languages. Mine is German.  As an undergrad at the University of California, Davis (near Sacramento), I double majored in International Relations and Mechanical Engineering.

I looked at getting an MBA as a way to transition out of the military.  A lot of my skills are transferable, but only if I 'repackage' them in a way that is more understandable to civilian firms.  Also, I wanted to take advantage of the Career Management process here

Bears00: I'm a multinational management major (which fits nicely with the Lauder program), but numerous friends are in health care. The major is intentionally open: some are MD/MBAs, others are interested in health care consulting, others medtech...

After that, I worked on chip design and product development in a large high-tech company in Silicon Valley. Also, I did some venture capital work in New York prior to coming to Wharton. I would advise you to re-read your application before the IV, then just go in and relax. Too many applicants seek the "right" answer, and end up not listening and answering the questions asked...

Nicky, not being yourself is the biggest mistake. So is memorizing answers.  Just relax- this is your opportunity to tell us about yourself. Be prepared, but don't be over-prepared.  And ask questions about things that matter to you. There are no "extra points" for lengthy, complex questions that show us you've managed to access a dusty corner of the website.

Nicky 484: IMO (I also worked in HR for two years during the medtech stint), the biggest mistake that interviewees make is trying to tell the interviewer what he or she thinks the interviewer wants to hear.

Entrepreneurship is a very important focus at Wharton. There are some terrific classes available. Also, there are several programs available for students. You can work on a business plan and potentially get funded while at Wharton. If you want to learn about the investing side of entrepreneurship, you can join the student-run $25M VC fund. Amocam, there's no set percentage, and it varies from year to year.  Last year we had 6,649 apps, interviewed about 45%, and admitted around 1,150.

Mr. Caleel, my question is for you. I am a Marine Engineer. I was interviewed for Fall 2007 but unfortunately dinged. I will be re-applying at Wharton for Fall 2009. My job requires me to be at sea most of the time. Is it advisable to get interviewed on board in my case it will be telephonic. I can't wait for long times on land because of professional commitments.

bears00: I have just been amazed at how well the career management office works at Wharton. They are very hands-on. In addition to offering a series of group workshops throughout the academic year, the career management office also offers personalized 1-1 career development sessions. Career management staff are mostly MBAs who have worked in consulting, i-banking, marketing, PE/VC and other jobs -- so they understand the industry very well.

The biggest hurdle I see in the China pool is that they read ChaseDream too much and don't say what they really think. I end up reading many similar essays and hearing a lot of the same phrases in interviews.

But then if he has a work ex of less than 2 years he has a disadvantage to get admission in a prestigious MBA program like Wharton's. What do you advise one should do? Abhishek, we do not disclose those numbers. Roughly, I can say that we had a healthy R1 application flow. Historically, we interview about 35-45% of applicants.

I chose Wharton mainly for the people. All the students that I met at Wharton were really accomplished and down-to-earth. This combination creates an extremely collaborative culture at Wharton. Also, the Wharton brand and alumni network is very strong around the world.

Mr. Caleel, how do you distinguish one candidate from the other while giving final admissions? What do you think clicks for somebody who gets the final offer? In India, students prepare too much and hence cram the info on the Wharton website and at the end forget to enjoy that overall experience.  What is your take on that? Does one need to be a super hero to get inside Wharton? Don't you look for everyday Heroes?

Many applicants try to craft an application based on what they think adcom wants to see. That is really not the way admissions works here. Be yourself, talk about your life experiences and what you want to do, and how Wharton can help in the journey.

rp2205, they are, but I would strongly advise applicants to use their best judgment. A dozen extra letters, no matter how positive, will not usually reflect well on the applicant.  At the risk of sounding repetitive, the best advice is to simply follow the instructions.

Outside of student clubs, there are several ways to develop leadership skills. There are initiatives such as the Dean's Graduate Student Advisory Committee, in which students work with the Dean on long term strategic initiatives. Your fellow students will include folks who just returned from doing the Peace Corps in Mongolia or Kazakhstan, doing special operations for the military, analyzing derivatives in Frankfurt or Hong Kong, running a startup out of Silicon Valley, and yes- working in banking, consulting, marketing, and industry.

Txnskr: City Planning 552 (in the School of Design)...Inner City Real Estate. I just wrote an article on it in the school newspaper- the Wharton Journal- so check there if it sounds interesting. Basically the class combines business, public policy, and construction to analyze the various facets of inner city decay while completely restoring an abandoned row house to ultimately be sold at cost to a local first-time home buyer.
