2008 Wharton MBA Admissions Chat with Thomas Caleel
Please feel free to let us know if you would like to be informed of future chats by sending an e-mail to chat@accepted.com. We would also be interested in knowing if you would prefer a different format or different topics.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 12:53:59 PM)
First I want to welcome you all to Accepted.com’s Wharton admissions chat.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:54:07 PM)
Linda, thank you for the invitation. It's a pleasure to be here again.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 12:54:13 PM)
I want to introduce our special guests from Wharton:
- Thomas Caleel- Director, MBA Admissions and Financial Aid
- Alex Fleming - Wharton 08
- Dan Bowermaster -Wharton 08
- Nana Murugesan - Wharton 08
Special thanks to the Wharton guests.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 12:54:46 PM)
Alex, Dan, and Nana could you please post a little background
information about yourself . What did you do before coming to Wharton?
What is your concentration? What was your summer internship and what do
you plan to do after graduation?
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 12:54:53 PM)
Thanks to everyone for joining.
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:55:04 PM)
Linda, thanks for hosting us. Hello everyone. I am from
Eureka, CA and worked in the medical device industry for ~seven years
prior to Wharton. I am doing one of Wharton's dual degree programs- the Lauder program-
which is a 24 month MBA and MA in international studies with a focus on
one of eight languages. Mine is German. As an undergrad at the University of California, Davis (near
Sacramento), I double majored in International Relations and Mechanical
Engineering.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:55:04 PM)
I am from Phoenix, AZ. Undergrad at Penn, double major Physics and
Russian. I spent five years in the US Navy as a Nuclear submarine
officer. Joint degree student with SAIS. My Wharton major is
Finance. I want to work in consulting in Eastern Europe after graduation.
SuperD (Nov 15, 2007 12:57:09 PM)
Thomas: I wanted to know if today is the last day for interview calls for round 1.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:57:17 PM)
Super, yes it is. All invites will be released this afternoon.
Please note that we do have a different feedback mechanism this
year,
so if you are not successful, please read your decision letter
carefully.
tinks (Nov 15, 2007 12:58:06 PM)
Thomas: Is a telephonic interview a disadvantage vis a vis face to face interview?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:58:15 PM)
Tinks, no it is not. But we rarely do phone IVs.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 12:58:26 PM)
Thomas, can you outline the feedback mechanism this year?
bears00 (Nov 15, 2007 12:58:36 PM)
Can Dan Bowermaster talk a little bit about his experience in the
health care major (if that's what he did)? Does the major lean towards
any particular field in healthcare (pharma, biotech, etc)?
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 12:59:07 PM)
Alex, can you comment on your transition from the military to student life?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:59:11 PM)
Yes. We have a separate email address where unsuccessful applicants can
send and email (please follow the instructions carefully). We will then
select feedback candidates at random in May.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:59:27 PM)
I looked at getting an MBA as a way to transition out of the military.
A lot of my skills are transferable, but only if I 'repackage'
them in a way that is more understandable to civilian firms. Also, I wanted to take advantage of the Career Management process here
SuperD (Nov 15, 2007 12:59:28 PM)
Oh, okay thanks.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:59:39 PM)
We have done this to level the playing field from our traditional
model, which was call-in, and was difficult for some international
students.
gauravpuri (Nov 15, 2007 12:59:41 PM)
Hello Mr. Caleel, my question is - have you ever interviewed an individual
who ended up with a low GMAT but had a good all time record? If yes, did he
or she with a low GMAT squeeze in admission at Wharton?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 12:59:44 PM)
Bears00: I'm a multinational management major (which fits nicely with
the Lauder program), but numerous friends are in health care. The major
is intentionally open: some are MD/MBAs, others are interested in
health care consulting, others medtech...
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:00:12 PM)
Gaurav, we admitted a candidate last year with a 590 GMAT. This is a
holistic process. Of course, I always encourage people not to aim
for that distinction in next year's class...
SuperD (Nov 15, 2007 1:00:32 PM)
Thomas: So have the decisions been sent?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:00:42 PM)
No, they will be released later this afternoon.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:01:04 PM)
There are a lot of former military at Wharton.
03vet (Nov 15, 2007 1:01:13 PM)
This is a question for Dan. How do you recommend that we prepare for the Lauder portion of the interview?
nicky484 (Nov 15, 2007 1:01:52 PM)
Thomas: What are you looking for at interview?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:02:06 PM)
Nicky, the interview, like the application, is holistic.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 1:02:13 PM)
Alex, Dan and Nana : How did you prepare for your Wharton interview?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:02:20 PM)
We will look for your motivation to attend Wharton, as well as your goals. We may ask about leadership or teamwork or involvement as well.
rp2205 (Nov 15, 2007 1:02:27 PM)
2 Questions for Thomas - 1. When is it appropriate to provide a 3rd
recommendation? I have helped to start a nonprofit and would like to
bolster my recommendation with a letter from the managing director. And
is it ok to request a recommendation from someone I haven't worked with
for 2 years?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:02:38 PM)
03vet: Just like you would for the Wharton interview. Simply be
yourself. Applicants have a strong international focus (which they
already communicated in their essays) and the obvious question is why
Lauder and Wharton?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:02:46 PM)
I just reviewed my Essay 1 and practiced talking it out in about 5 min.
Other than that, I relaxed and tried to be myself; not much prep.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:03:03 PM)
Hi, my name is Nana Murugesan and I am a first year MBA at Wharton. I did
my Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin -
Madison. After that, I worked on chip design and product development in
a large high-tech company in Silicon Valley. Also, I did some venture
capital work in New York prior to coming to Wharton. I am looking into
consulting and venture capital options after business school.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:03:05 PM)
I would advise you to re-read your application before the IV, then just
go in and relax. Too many applicants seek the "right" answer, and end
up not listening and answering the questions asked...
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:03:26 PM)
rp2205, the choice is up to you. If you believe it adds value, then you
should certainly go ahead and add it. We do allow a 3rd, optional, peer
recommendation as well.
amocam (Nov 15, 2007 1:03:26 PM)
Nana: Can you briefly explain about Wharton's focus on entrepreneurship?
tinks (Nov 15, 2007 1:03:46 PM)
Thomas: But is it always possible for international applicants to have a face to face interview with school reps?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:03:48 PM)
Linda: Similar to Alex, I did not prep much. I figured I could just be
myself (in the application, during the interview, etc.) and clearly
communicate my story.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:03:59 PM)
In general, following the guidelines in the application is advised...
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:04:30 PM)
Optional really does mean optional, not 'do this to show how super dedicated you are'.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:04:42 PM)
Tinks, yes it is. We do Hub interviews in select cities.
nicky484 (Nov 15, 2007 1:04:57 PM)
Thomas: What are the common mistakes from interviewees?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:05:06 PM)
This year will include Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok, Mumbai, Delhi, London, Seoul, and Tokyo.
bears00 (Nov 15, 2007 1:05:25 PM)
Alex, Dan, and Nana: How hands-on is the career management office?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:05:26 PM)
Nicky, not being yourself is the biggest mistake. So is memorizing answers. Just relax- this is your opportunity to tell us about yourself. Be prepared, but don't be over-prepared. And ask questions about things that matter to you. There are no "extra
points" for lengthy, complex questions that show us you've managed to
access a dusty corner of the website.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:05:39 PM)
Bears00 - very, they are in your life from the first day you get here.
The initiative is yours to get a job, but they bend over
backwards to help you.
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:06:08 PM)
Nicky 484: IMO (I also worked in HR for two years during the medtech
stint), the biggest mistake that interviewees make is trying to tell
the interviewer what he or she thinks the interviewer wants to hear.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:06:47 PM)
Entrepreneurship is a very important focus at Wharton. There are some
terrific classes available. Also, there are several programs available
for students. You can work on a business plan and potentially get
funded while at Wharton. If you want to learn about the investing side
of entrepreneurship, you can join the student-run $25M VC fund. Check
out: http://www.wep.wharton.upenn.edu/
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:06:57 PM)
Linda, Career Management Office is extremely helpful and is a well-run
process, especially for those interested in traditional fields like
investment banking or consulting.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:07:29 PM)
Dan, you are 100% correct. The same thing goes for essays- don't write what you think we want to read.
notero999 (Nov 15, 2007 1:07:33 PM)
Thomas: Will all of the final decisions be released at the same time?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:07:35 PM)
Actually, I just came from a CM brown bag about applying for internships, the fun is just beginning for the first years.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:07:49 PM)
notero999: Yes.
remamo28 (Nov 15, 2007 1:07:53 PM)
Hi Mr. Caleel, my interview is tomorrow AM on Wharton's Campus. What's the best advice you can give me?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:08:17 PM)
Remamo, congratulations. Arrive a bit early, bring a resume, and enjoy the experience.
tinks (Nov 15, 2007 1:08:22 PM)
Thanks Thomas.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:08:24 PM)
Remamo - have fun!
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:08:41 PM)
And bring an umbrella if the weather is anything like today...
Ozgur Toraman (Nov 15, 2007 1:08:53 PM)
I heard that most candidates after the round one interviews get wait listed. How accurate is that?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:09:09 PM)
On-campus IVs are fun because they are with current students (second years), so you get a very good insight into the school.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:09:20 PM)
Ozgur, not accurate at all.
amocam (Nov 15, 2007 1:09:40 PM)
How many students (percentage) do convert the interview call into final admissions?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:09:55 PM)
Amocam, there's no set percentage, and it varies from year to year.
Last year we had 6,649 apps, interviewed about 45%, and admitted
around 1,150.
klepto (Nov 15, 2007 1:10:17 PM)
Mr. Caleel, my question is for you. I am a Marine Engineer. I was
interviewed for Fall 2007 but unfortunately dinged. I will be
re-applying at Wharton for Fall 2009. My job requires me to be at sea
most of the time. Is it advisable to get interviewed on board in my
case it will be telephonic. I can't wait for long times on land because
of professional commitments.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:10:25 PM)
bears00: I have just been amazed at how well the career management
office works at Wharton. They are very hands-on. In addition to
offering a series of group workshops throughout the academic year, the
career management office also offers personalized 1-1 career
development sessions. Career management staff are mostly MBAs who have
worked in consulting, i-banking, marketing, PE/VC and other jobs -- so
they understand the industry very well.
nicky484 (Nov 15, 2007 1:10:44 PM)
Thank you, Thomas.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:10:49 PM)
Klepto, no worries- we're familiar with the situation. If you are invited again, we can do a telephone interview if necessary.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:11:07 PM)
Klepto - a friend of mine had the same situation and was able to IV over phone from a port call.
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:11:09 PM)
Thomas: What's the biggest hurdle for Chinese applicants to get in Wharton? I know most of them are actually pretty good.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:11:17 PM)
I've done phone IVs with Captains at sea, as well as deployed troops in rather remote forward operating bases...
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:11:31 PM)
gr8, most of our applicants in general are very good. We hold everyone to the same standard of excellence.
klepto (Nov 15, 2007 1:11:41 PM)
Thanks Mr.Caleel.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 1:11:44 PM)
Alex, Dan and Nana, what is Wharton’s greatest strength? What would you like to see improved?
dave (Nov 15, 2007 1:12:09 PM)
How are interview results communicated back to the admissions
committee? If, in hindsight, we have identified a weakness in our
application, what is the best way to address that weakness during the
interview?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:12:10 PM)
For me, the people, I have never been around such an incredible group.
Everyday I am amazed at the sheer intelligence, experience and
humility of the people around me.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:12:30 PM)
The biggest hurdle I see in the China pool is that they read ChaseDream
too much and don't say what they really think. I end up reading many
similar essays and hearing a lot of the same phrases in interviews.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 1:12:42 PM)
LOL.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:12:54 PM)
Dave, the interviewer will do a write-up. If there's something important, please be sure to mention it during the interview.
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:13:00 PM)
Thomas: How big a role does the language play in the application for international applicants?
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 1:13:18 PM)
How big a role does English fluency play in the interview from international applicants?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:13:48 PM)
gr8, because we have a rigorous academic environment with an emphasis
on teamwork, both written and spoken English are important. There is no
set "weight" assigned.
gauravpuri (Nov 15, 2007 1:13:57 PM)
Mr. Caleel, I have 6 years full time work ex. I have a banking
background. I'm presently working at Barclays Bank PLC, New Delhi and
would want only to major in Finance at Wharton. Hence, do you ask
technical finance related questions too at the interview? Reason I'm
asking this is then I would prepare accordingly.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:14:03 PM)
It is important that you be able to communicate well with your classmates
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:14:36 PM)
For me, Wharton's greatest strength is co-production. Students,
faculty, and staff, all work together to create a terrific experience
for everyone.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:14:39 PM)
gaurav, there should be no technical questions during the interview. You will get plenty of those later on during recruiting.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 1:14:58 PM)
Are there any special considerations for re-applicants in an interview?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:15:01 PM)
Linda, I concur with Alex about Wharton's greatest strength. It's the
combination of outstanding people and the wealth of opportunity
available here. If there was anything I would change, it would be to
extend the program a year (wishful thinking).
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:15:15 PM)
Linda, no. The interviewer doesn't even know the person is re-applying.
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:15:31 PM)
Thomas: What’s the dress code for on-campus interview?
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 1:15:35 PM)
Thanks Thomas.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:15:47 PM)
gr8 - be safe, business.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:15:50 PM)
Business.
notero999 (Nov 15, 2007 1:16:07 PM)
Will all final decisions be released at the same time on the 20th of December?
ohaqqi (Nov 15, 2007 1:16:19 PM)
When is the best time to visit the school and be able to get time with
students, possibly sit in on a class? I will be applying next year and
would like to visit, but not during a hectic time (recruiting,
midterms, finals, etc).
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:16:20 PM)
Notero, yes.
cabot97 (Nov 15, 2007 1:16:40 PM)
Are most on campus interviews with second year students?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:16:42 PM)
Ohaqqi, we have a schedule posted on our website. In general, Oct/Nov is a good time.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:16:47 PM)
Ohaqqi - come on a Thursday if you can, so you can go to Pub, best time to hang out with people.
notero999 (Nov 15, 2007 1:16:58 PM)
Thomas: Is the interview more focused on your professional experience or getting to know you as a person?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:17:04 PM)
Cabot, 99% are with our GAs- second year students who are trained and are members of the AdComm.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:17:13 PM)
Notero999, it's a mix of both.
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:17:13 PM)
Ohaqqi: My personal favorite day is Thursday because it is the close of
the school week (although groups often meet for project work on
Fridays). You can sit in on class and go to Pub at night. It's a great
time to meet other Wharton students.
ohaqqi (Nov 15, 2007 1:17:22 PM)
Mr. Caleel, for people with tech backgrounds, do you put more emphasis on their verbal GMAT score?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:17:41 PM)
Ohaqqi, not especially. In all cases we evaluate the whole package.
nambos (Nov 15, 2007 1:18:14 PM)
Thomas: What are you looking for from the interview? I heard it is not
make or break. Does it add extra-points to the final decision? How much
weight?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:18:33 PM)
Nambos, there is no particular formula, and you are correct- it is NOT make or break.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 1:18:40 PM)
Alex, Dan and Nana: What were the reasons you chose Wharton? Did it meet your expectations?
amocam (Nov 15, 2007 1:18:51 PM)
Does the interview process focus more on evaluating communication and
interpersonal skills? Or it is more about knowing the candidate as a
whole?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:18:54 PM)
We re-evaluate the entire file after the interview write-up returns, and we see how it all comes together.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:19:02 PM)
Amocam, both.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:19:03 PM)
Linda: 40% of the students at Wharton are international. Therefore, interviewers are well aware of fluency issues.
tinks (Nov 15, 2007 1:19:17 PM)
Thomas: For a career changer the earlier he leaves the current career
path for his desired career path the better it is. But then if he has a
work ex of less than 2 years he has a disadvantage to get admission in a
prestigious MBA program like Wharton's. What do you advise one should
do? How does the Adcom at Wharton take this issue?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:19:38 PM)
I chose Wharton because I wanted to do the joint degree with SAIS,
because of the incredible brand, access to the Alumni network, and
networking opportunities with my classmates.
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:19:56 PM)
I chose Wharton for three reasons: 1. a strong international focus
(Lauder), 2. a strong, analytical-based education, 3. a large class size.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:20:06 PM)
Tinks, I don't think there's a disadvantage, per se.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:20:21 PM)
We ask you to apply when you think you are ready, so if <2 years is the right time, then apply. Just be sure to demonstrate why you think this is the right thing for
you to do, and why you're looking to change careers, and how you expect
Wharton to help you.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:20:21 PM)
Wharton is in the process of exceeding my expectations - do not be surprised if the journey is not what you expect :)
abhishekg (Nov 15, 2007 1:20:27 PM)
Thomas: Can you shed some light on how many Round 1 applicants you have
this year? What percentage are you interviewing? And historically, what
percentage get accepted?
ohaqqi (Nov 15, 2007 1:21:15 PM)
Nana, what was the driving force behind your switch from Engineering to
VC? How difficult was it to get into VC straight from engineering
without a business background? How will Wharton benefit you in the
field of VC post graduation?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:21:29 PM)
Abhishek, we do not disclose those numbers. Roughly, I can say that we
had a healthy R1 application flow. Historically, we interview about 35-45% of
applicants.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:21:36 PM)
03vet - for people who want to go overseas, the push is on us to
network out to the international offices and make sure that we get on
their radar screen, most of it is up to us, but CM helps a lot with
contacts. Other than that, watch my diary to see how it goes http://diaries.wharton.upenn.edu.
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:22:04 PM)
What's your suggestion to the open-ended questions such as "describe yourself"?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:22:33 PM)
03vet: I worked in Europe this summer doing consulting. Alex is
correct; the bigger firms will come to campus looking for those
interested in working overseas, but a lot of the initiative is up to
the individual student.
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:23:13 PM)
Gr8: Such open-ended questions are intended to be exactly that. :)
gauravpuri (Nov 15, 2007 1:23:18 PM)
Thank you sir.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:23:25 PM)
gr8, let your personality shine through :)
Ozgur Toraman (Nov 15, 2007 1:23:32 PM)
Business or business casual?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:23:47 PM)
For IVs on campus or at a Hub? Business. For men that would be a suit and tie. For women, a suit.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:24:06 PM)
I chose Wharton mainly for the people. All the students that I met at
Wharton were really accomplished and down-to-earth. This combination
creates an extremely collaborative culture at Wharton. Also, the
Wharton brand and alumni network is very strong around the world.
nambos (Nov 15, 2007 1:24:25 PM)
Thomas- How is the application pool compared to last year? Any number increase?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:24:48 PM)
nambos, we had a healthy Round 1. We do not disclose YOY numbers by round.
rp2205 (Nov 15, 2007 1:24:59 PM)
Alex, Dan, and Nana: Is it a disadvantage if I don't come from a
consulting, finance or entrepreneurial background? My background is in
industry.
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:25:13 PM)
Ozgur: You can't go wrong overdressing, and can loosen a tie/jacket,
roll up your sleeves, etc., to make it less formal if necessary.
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:25:13 PM)
Tom, thanks. I mean is the language the biggest hurdle for Chinese?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:25:29 PM)
rp2205, no not at all, I came out of the military. There is a former orchestra conductor, Olympic runner, hockey player, entrepreneurs...
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:25:39 PM)
gr8, it is case by case.
gauravpuri (Nov 15, 2007 1:25:49 PM)
Mr. Caleel, how do you distinguish one candidate from the other while
giving final admissions? What do you think clicks for somebody who gets
the final offer? In India, students prepare too much and hence cram the
info on the Wharton website and at the end forget to enjoy that overall
experience. What is your take on that? Does one need to be a
super
hero to get inside Wharton? Don't you look for everyday Heroes?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:26:08 PM)
Rp2205: Well I came out of medical devices, so maybe I stuck in...LOL. In all seriousness: it doesn't matter.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:26:21 PM)
Rp2205 ... tons of engineers.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:26:43 PM)
Gaurav, I like that phrase- everyday heroes! That's a great way to look
at it. You don't need to be superman or superwoman to get in, and
trying to be one will lessen your chances, actually...
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:26:52 PM)
Rp2005: Not at all! I have an engineering background. My classmates
come from very diverse backgrounds. There are school teachers, pilots,
athletes, etc. in my class. Wharton really values diversity.
dave (Nov 15, 2007 1:26:54 PM)
On interview day, if we want to tour campus and sit in on a class, do
we just show up at the admissions office? The website says no
appointment is needed.
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:27:18 PM)
Dave: Yes. You can speak with Renee or any of the student volunteers who coordinate visits to class.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:27:23 PM)
Yep, just show up, classes start at 9, so get in a little early.
dave (Nov 15, 2007 1:27:59 PM)
Are healthcare majors at a disadvantage to the overall curriculum at
Wharton? It seems like classes during the first year, and many
electives during the second, must be in the healthcare department. I
don't want to miss opportunities to be involved in the other
departments and learning experiences at Wharton.
txnskr (Nov 15, 2007 1:28:14 PM)
Alex, Dan, and Nana: what ways does the program develop leadership skills other than being involved with student clubs?
ohaqqi (Nov 15, 2007 1:28:43 PM)
Mr. Caleel, how damaging is it if an applicant cannot (for job security
purposes) get a recommendation from his current supervisor? Does a
substitute recomendation from somebody in community service that I am involved in
carry as much weight (assuming the person knows me well and I have been
at the service for over a year)?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:28:52 PM)
Txnskr, there are the leadership ventures, outdoor leadership
experience, sports teams, lots of practical leadership
opportunity...hundreds of positions of responsibility coming open all
the time..there is also a leadership and management class.
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:29:16 PM)
Dave: I don't think so. Health care majors do have to do extra work (as
do JD/MBAs, SAIS, Lauder, etc.), but I've never heard about any student
complaining about missing opportunities.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:29:22 PM)
Ohaqqi, it's fine, but be sure to let us know why in the optional essay.
dave (Nov 15, 2007 1:29:35 PM)
Thomas: Is the interview write-up a collection of factual statements
(word for word notes on responses to questions), or does the
interviewer interpret, add emotion, character and personality, to the
interview?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:29:54 PM)
Dave, it's both. We want to know both the content and the context of the interview.
JBean (Nov 15, 2007 1:29:55 PM)
What time are classes (are there specific block times)? Is it possible
to arrange to have lunch with a current student and see a class just by
showing up that morning?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:30:04 PM)
Ohaqqi: This situation is common. My company did not know as well.
Choose someone who could candidly evaluate you as well as your
supervisor.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:30:08 PM)
JBean, yes. Details are available on our website.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:30:12 PM)
The best leadership training, I think, comes from the learning teams. 5 people who you have to figure out how to work with no matter what. LOL.
rambling_man (Nov 15, 2007 1:30:17 PM)
Thomas: If Wharton takes only 1 out of three interviewed, what factors play
into an interview evaluation that can make or break an application?
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:30:20 PM)
Gauravpuri: I am from India as well and understand what you mean. My
suggestion is to be yourself in the application. Many applicants try to
craft an application based on what they think adcom wants to see. That
is really not the way admissions works here. Be yourself, talk about
your life experiences and what you want to do, and how Wharton can help
in the journey.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:30:48 PM)
Rambling_man, that's really individual. The interview is just one part of the
evaluation, and many times a great interview can still lead to a deny and
vice-versa.
arturo v (Nov 15, 2007 1:31:31 PM)
Thomas: Is there any advantage in the admission process because of your intended major?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:31:47 PM)
BTW, many people think they did much worse in the interview than they really did... So don't panic afterwards.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:32:02 PM)
Arturo, none at all.
rp2205 (Nov 15, 2007 1:32:06 PM)
Thomas, what is your opinion of personal recommendations sent to the
school outside of the application process? Are these reviewed as part
of the prospective's application package?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:32:44 PM)
rp2205, they are, but I would strongly advise applicants to use their
best
judgment. A dozen extra letters, no matter how positive, will not
usually reflect well on the applicant. At the risk of sounding
repetitive, the best advice is to simply follow the instructions.
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:33:04 PM)
Thomas: Is there any particular suggestion for someone with extensive edu (MS and PHD)?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:33:13 PM)
gr8, in what sense?
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:33:20 PM)
Outside of student clubs, there are several ways to develop leadership
skills. There are initiatives such as the Dean's Graduate Student
Advisory Committee, in which students work with the Dean on long term
strategic initiatives. Check out
http://clubs.wharton.upenn.edu/dgsac/index.shtml. Also, students can run conferences, serve on non-profit boards, etc.
ReadyforWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:33:24 PM)
Alex, Dan, and Nana: I'm coming from a non-profit background and want
to get into institutional (endowment) management. How are the hard
skills taught at Wharton?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:34:19 PM)
ReadyforWharton - from day one you are into calculus, statistics, finance,
accounting economics ... doing problem sets and homework, they really
make sure you know what you are doing.
gauravpuri (Nov 15, 2007 1:34:24 PM)
Thanks a ton Nana.
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:34:42 PM)
Thomas, because of MS/PHD so I have less work experience and maybe a
little older. Less work experience means less management exp,
typically...etc.
jka1 (Nov 15, 2007 1:34:56 PM)
Alex - Do students evaluate each other's performance in group projects?
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:35:03 PM)
ReadyforWharton: There is a new program launched at Wharton called the
Nonprofit Fellowship Program. In this program, students get some
intense training for institutional management.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:35:06 PM)
gr8, don't worry, we will take that into consideration. You should, however, explain why you now need this additional degree.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:35:34 PM)
jka1- yes, we have a feedback process that is ongoing. The best advice
I have received so far on my leadership is from my learning team
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:35:46 PM)
Thomas: Do you know the reason for Wharton's not participating in the
Aspen Institute survey/evaluation of MBA program incorporating
CSR/Ethics/Sustainability in the last couple of years?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:36:02 PM)
gr8, no I do not.
nambos (Nov 15, 2007 1:36:25 PM)
Thomas - What could cause an applicant to be wait-listed?
rp2205 (Nov 15, 2007 1:36:50 PM)
Alex, Dan, and Nana: Wharton has a reputation as being a 'finance'
school. Is Wharton fostering this reputation or is that a label that
others have applied?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:36:54 PM)
Nambos, many things. It's difficult to answer because it depends on the overall pool.
remamo28 (Nov 15, 2007 1:36:56 PM)
Thank you so much for your time! Looking forward to visiting Wharton tomorrow.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:37:36 PM)
rp2205 - for me that is a label that other people have applied. I have
encountered just as many people doing amazing work in other things here
as I have Finance people.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:38:19 PM)
jka1: yes, there is a lot of 360 degree feedback
jazz (Nov 15, 2007 1:38:57 PM)
Thomas - if we need to change our interview date/time, what is the
easiest way? I see a button online that says "I will not be able to
attend", by pressing that will we be able to reschedule? Does it put a
bad mark on our application?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:39:15 PM)
Jazz, it will not affect your application in any way. We don't even track it.
DCApp (Nov 15, 2007 1:39:54 PM)
Thomas: In essay 1, how specific do I need to be in describing my long
term career goals? I do have a general idea of where I want to go, but
nothing more specific in terms of which industry.
amocam (Nov 15, 2007 1:39:58 PM)
Nana: how many students at Wharton end up starting their own business?
rp2205 (Nov 15, 2007 1:40:15 PM)
Alex, Dan, Nana: How does Wharton ensure students get a well-rounded
education and develop as a person as well as learn business tools and
techniques?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:40:52 PM)
DCApp: none of us have a crystal ball, but I would focus on what you aspire to.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:41:03 PM)
Dan's answer is 100% correct.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:41:14 PM)
rp2205 - there is a balance in the core classes between hard and soft
skills, and there is also a focus on experiential learning through
cohorts and learning teams.
nicky484 (Nov 15, 2007 1:41:39 PM)
Thomas, How can the interviewee show leadership during the interview?
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:41:45 PM)
rp2205: Wharton is a global business school and there is equal emphasis
on all aspects of business -- entrepreneurship, marketing, finance,
operations, strategy, etc.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:42:04 PM)
By talking about specific examples from their life (work, extra-curriculars, school, etc).
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:42:05 PM)
rp2205- also the myriad leadership opportunities outside of the
classroom: sports teams, community service projects, industry clubs,
etc.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:42:26 PM)
rp2205: that is a very good question!
ohaqqi (Nov 15, 2007 1:42:31 PM)
Mr. Caleel, what would you recommend to applicants who aren't 100% sure
what they want to do after attaining an MBA? For example, I'm not sure
if I want to go into consulting or VC. How should I approach my essays?
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:42:47 PM)
Alex, Dan, Nana - I particularly value the maturity and diversified
experience of classmates. Do you really think Wharton stands out in this
regard?
JBean (Nov 15, 2007 1:43:09 PM)
Thanks, Thomas.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:43:17 PM)
ohaqqi, I would recommend that you focus a bit first. If you arrive
unsure of what you want to do, you can easily get lost in the
recruiting process. That doesn't mean you can't change, but things come at you pretty fast here.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:43:47 PM)
gr8 - oh yes, I have run out of adjectives to describe how much variety
there is in my class, the range of experience is mind blowing.
nicky484 (Nov 15, 2007 1:44:02 PM)
Thomas: What do you expect from "do you have any questions?"
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:44:42 PM)
nicky - nothing cryptic, just ask any questions you have.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:44:53 PM)
Nicky, just an opportunity for you to ask a question you may have (see my earlier posts).
tinks (Nov 15, 2007 1:44:59 PM)
You must be receiving a large pool of applicants from India graduating
from IITs having high GMAT score, very similar work profile ; what is
it that differentiates these and appeals to the adcom?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:45:23 PM)
Tinks, they differentiate themselves in their essays, recommendations, accomplishments, and IVs
ss (Nov 15, 2007 1:45:29 PM)
Thomas, you wrote "many times a great IV can lead to a deny and
vice-versa". I am a bit baffled. Could you please clarify further? Why
would a great IV lead to deny? And if the other stats point towards
"deny" why was the candidate invited to interview? Would you be able to
provide an example of when this might be the case?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:45:42 PM)
GR8- definitely. Your fellow students will include folks who just
returned from doing the Peace Corps in Mongolia or Kazakhstan, doing
special operations for the military, analyzing derivatives in Frankfurt
or Hong Kong, running a startup out of Silicon Valley, and yes- working
in banking, consulting, marketing, and industry.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:45:58 PM)
rp2205: Wharton truly provides a holistic experience. Outside of
classes and clubs, there are programs such as the Wharton Leadership
Ventures, in which a group of students get an intense leadership and
teamwork experiences in places such as Antarctica, Patagonia, Mount
Everest and USMC Officer Training School.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:46:06 PM)
rp2205: For more info, check out http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/leadership/leadership/index.cfm/index.htm.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:46:37 PM)
SS, because it is a holistic process, the interview is just one data point. So
sometimes we are curious about an applicant, invite to interview, and while
the interview goes well, in the overall pool, the applicant is just not strong
enough for an "Admit."
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:47:21 PM)
ohaqqi - double majors are tough but relatively common.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:47:25 PM)
ohaqqi, not necessarily. Again, you must clearly explain why you are seeking an MBA now.
SuperD (Nov 15, 2007 1:47:56 PM)
If someone has a gap in between employment due to unavoidable
circumstances, will that be negative ..how can this be addressed in the
application?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:48:16 PM)
SuperD - just portray it honestly and realistically.
DanBowermasterWhartonNanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:48:21 PM)
gr8: Yes, Wharton really stands out when you look at the maturity of students.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:48:22 PM)
Super, it's up to the applicant to explain the gap. There are several opportunities to do so.
prospectivestudent (Nov 15, 2007 1:48:22 PM)
Alex, Dan, Nana: If I may ask, what is the single most important value of Wharton? What does it value the most and is proud of?
rp2205 (Nov 15, 2007 1:48:51 PM)
Thanks Nana.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:49:07 PM)
Prospectivestudent - my answer would be co-production, we are all here
learning and teaching each other, and we are all part of what makes
this place great.
SuperD (Nov 15, 2007 1:49:26 PM)
Thanks.
nicky484 (Nov 15, 2007 1:49:46 PM)
Nana, could you tell me through your interview experience about the hardest question you got?
nambos (Nov 15, 2007 1:50:02 PM)
Thomas - Thanks for your time and answers. I just had an alumni interview this morning and I am still so excited!
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:50:10 PM)
Prospectivestudent - this is not just a place where you listen to teachers talk all day and accept things at face value.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:50:20 PM)
Nambos, my pleasure!
dave (Nov 15, 2007 1:50:29 PM)
Thomas: Is it true that Wharton accepts about 50 students to the
healthcare program per year? Is the acceptance rate less for healthcare
majors than for those applying for a different major?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:50:52 PM)
Dave, the class usually ranges between 50-60, but it can go higher or lower depending on the applicant pool.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:51:20 PM)
nicky484, I interviewed with a second year student on campus. The
questions were straightforward and the interviewer made sure the
atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly.
txnskr (Nov 15, 2007 1:51:25 PM)
Alex, Dan and Nana, what have been your favorite classes so far and why?
jka1 (Nov 15, 2007 1:51:31 PM)
Thomas - Do you read "all" applications, even those that perhaps didn't
fare during the previous two reads by students and adcom?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:52:03 PM)
jka1, yes. In fact, that's where I find some pretty interesting applicants.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:52:13 PM)
Finance 601 with Franklin Allen, because he is awesome and hilarious.
Managing people at work with Useem, he is incredible. Classes that have
great content and interesting presentation.
Ar+ (Nov 15, 2007 1:52:35 PM)
Thomas- If weighted, the important of interview result is about what percent from overall application evaluation?
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:52:51 PM)
My favorite class so far has been Statistics. I never thought I would
say that but our professor made the class so much fun. We talked about
statistics in NFL, politics, etc -- every class was very lively with
great class participation :)
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:53:05 PM)
Ar+, it is simply another part of the application. We do not "weigh" it.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:53:08 PM)
Ar+ no specific weight, just a part of the whole package.
jen (Nov 15, 2007 1:53:22 PM)
Thomas: I know that there is a wide age range, but is there a certain applicant age that admissions would look down upon?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:53:31 PM)
Txnskr: City Planning 552 (in the School of Design)...Inner City Real
Estate. I just wrote an article on it in the school newspaper- the
Wharton Journal- so check there if it sounds interesting. Basically the
class combines business, public policy, and construction to analyze the
various facets of inner city decay while completely restoring an
abandoned row house to ultimately be sold at cost to a local first-time
home buyer.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:53:39 PM)
Jen, the age range in WG'09 was 20-42.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:54:03 PM)
And Brian, the 42 year old, has the heart of a 28 year old :)
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:54:04 PM)
Txnsker: Anything by Professor Bradlow (Marketing) and Useem (Management).
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:54:11 PM)
He is amazing...
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:54:16 PM)
Finance 601 with Professor Allen is also great. In fact, Alex and I are
sitting next to each other in Professor Allen's class now :-)
gauravpuri (Nov 15, 2007 1:54:22 PM)
Mr Caleel,do you accept applications from students who have already done
MBA from NON US B school? Is it considered disadvantageous and leads to
a sure shot decline?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:54:40 PM)
Gauravpuri, we accept several each year. You must make a clear case as to why you would like a second MBA.
prospectivestudent (Nov 15, 2007 1:54:47 PM)
Do we have opportunities to take a few select classes at UPenn while being enrolled at Wharton?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:54:58 PM)
Prospective, yes up to 4.
gr8 (Nov 15, 2007 1:55:02 PM)
Thomas, Alex, Dan, Nana: You know how many admits with environmental
background? Do you consider environmental background a special asset to
Wharton at this juncture of green "revolution" coming?
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:55:31 PM)
gr8 - I do not know, but I am sure it could not hurt you.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:55:34 PM)
gr8, we don't track it specifically, but we do have several in WG'08 and '09. No background has a "preference" in the process.
tinks (Nov 15, 2007 1:56:21 PM)
Thomas: How easy or difficult is is to get a work permit in US after
graduation for international students? Does Wharton help them in
anyway or it the responsibility of the student and the company which
is recruiting him?
gauravpuri (Nov 15, 2007 1:56:39 PM)
Alex, Thomas and Nana, what is the single most difficult question you
have faced during the interview? You all may answer individually.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:56:59 PM)
Tinks, that really depends on the economy. Wharton tries to support where it can, but in the end it's up to the employers.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:57:26 PM)
Gaurav - honestly, all my questions were pretty straight forward, I do not remember thinking any were 'hard'.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:57:43 PM)
Gaurav, I was asked (at a Hub by an AdComm), what my favorite airport
was as I mentioned I traveled a lot for my job. It's tough to pick just
one!
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:58:13 PM)
Tinks, as Thomas mentioned, it depends on the state-of-the-economy,
politics, etc. Wharton has done some unprecedented things to make sure
students get great jobs.
MBACandidate1 (Nov 15, 2007 1:58:45 PM)
Entrepreneurship: what features of the program/concentration at Wharton
make it a better choice than those at other schools? How personalized
can this program be?
Osiris1980 (Nov 15, 2007 1:58:52 PM)
Thomas: Does coming from a medical background (i.e. MD) improve one's
chances of admission (in any way) into the healthcare program?
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:59:12 PM)
Gauravpuri, my interview was straightforward. Remember, interviewers
are not trying to derail you but rather they really want to get to know
you better and help you get in.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 1:59:33 PM)
Osiris1980, no it does not. You should be able to articulate why you want
an MBA, and how the HCM program relates to what you want to do with
your MD.
gagan (Nov 15, 2007 1:59:41 PM)
Thomas: My career goal is social entrepreneurship but I don't have
experience in not for profit or community service. How can I bring my
passion for this career to the interviewer? Just my fit will be good
enough? Fit in the sense that I have the right innovative skills at my
professional career as a software engineer which may be required in new
career.
ohaqqi (Nov 15, 2007 2:00:31 PM)
Alex, Dan, and Nana: What percentage of your learning comes from
classes vs. what you learn from fellow students? Is it s 50-50 split,
or maybe skewed towards one or the other?
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:00:40 PM)
Osiris1980: No particular background helps you get in or keeps you out.
Each applicant get an equal shot and decisions are made on the entire
application package.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:00:42 PM)
Gagan, do your research and know what you are talking about... You will
have to make the case to a nonprofit during the recruiting process, so
it's good practice. In all things, a genuine passion for something will
come through in the IV.

Ohaqqi - pretty balanced honestly, but I would go with 50/50, sure.
MBACandidate1 (Nov 15, 2007 2:01:10 PM)
Thomas: Is Wharton concerned at all with their lower percentage of female students?
DanBowermasterWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:01:17 PM)
Ohaqqi- 50/50.
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:01:32 PM)
MBACandidate1, at 37% on a class of 800, we have one of the highest levels of any program.
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:01:44 PM)
Ohaqqi, that depends on the course. In quantitative classes, most of
the learning comes from classes and in qualitative classes, most of the
learning comes from fellow students
ReadyforWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:02:05 PM)
Any thoughts about Dean Robertson's recent pledge to make Wharton a
"force for good in the world?" What changes do you see coming to
curriculum and programs?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:02:08 PM)
We are always working to increase and improve our diversity, however, and we hold women-only events around the US and the world.
AlexFlemingWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:02:35 PM)
Ready -I agree with it and look forward to seeing how it plays out
gogo (Nov 15, 2007 2:02:37 PM)
Thomas: My interviewer didn't take notes during the interview. What type of report do they send back to Wharton?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:03:19 PM)
Different interviewers have different styles. Some take continuous notes then
summarize when the applicant leaves. Others do a final write-up with no
notes. I wouldn't read anything into it.
Linda Abraham (Nov 15, 2007 2:04:15 PM)
Are you seeing any recruiting fall out from the credit crunch?
tinks (Nov 15, 2007 2:04:57 PM)
Thomas: Is the competition among the prospective students who are seeking
MBA degree to get into investment banking toughest among the pool (when
compared to sale or marketing or consulting)?
ThomasCaleelWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:05:43 PM)
Tinks, all applicants compete with the entire pool. We do not separate by background, industry, country, etc...
NanaMurugesanWharton (Nov 15, 2007 2:06:07 PM)
ReadyforWharton: Dean Robertson believes that US business schools focus
just on a few countries and much more needs to be done. Wharton is
taking multiple steps to play a more active role in the transformation
of economies around the world.
