Were you given options as to the date of the interview?:
Yes - I called a few weeks before the interview and was given full flexibility in choosing the location, the day, and the time of the interview.
Could you choose the interview's location?:
Yes - Wanted to check out the campus, the town, so in my mind it wasn't even an option to do the off-site. Glad that went.
How many interviews were scheduled?:
1
How many interviewed you?:
1 - Two. One admissions officer, and one in training.
How long were the interviews?:
50 minutes
Who were the interviewers?:
Students, Administrative or admissions staff
What was the most difficult question?:
In a team, when someone isn't talented in something, but there's no one else to do that job, how would you handle it/mentor him as a leader? What are the examples?
What was the most interesting question?:
Given the financial crisis, am I worried about the internships availability and the post-MBA employment.
Any other questions you remember?:
Almost everything everyone posted here before me. Why MBA, Why Cornell, Why now, walk me through your resume, challenge as a team, etc.
Did you feel prepared?:
Yes - The "most difficult" question caught me off guard. I usually try to never assign things to someone who doesn't know how to do them, so that one was truly hard, but manageable.
How did you prepare?:
This website, Cornell's website, Johnson's website, essays, resume, talked to friends of friends in Ithaca.
Did you receive any feedback at the end?:
No - Both interviewers were very friendly, but no feedback at all. I did not ask for one either.
What was your opinion of the Faculty?:
Great. Not only great tutors. I totally related to one professor whose class I attended. He runs and swims and gave me a thousand tips on sports activities in the area.
What was your opinion of the Alumni?:
Very helpful. One of the senior alumni from my area spent almost an hour on a phone with me telling me about the school.
What was your opinion of the Students?:
Very very sharp, international, and NYC. I love all of the above, so I thought students were very hi-end. Also, everyone was very friendly. The first day I didn't know where the admissions office was, a student took a break from his lunch to walk me to the office. Very caring.
What was your opinion of the Office Personnel?:
Extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Michael is a star. (I had free meals all three days I was in Ithaca! - that wasn't necessary at all, but sure was very very nice on their behalf). Also, I spent quite some time with other admissions people, they were all very nice, caring, polite, interested, etc. One of the admissions reps even got me a ticket to a hockey game! Overall: excellent.
Did you receive a tour?:
Yes - Great facility. One major benefit comparing to other schools - very spacious. Also, attended a class and a hockey game.
What was most impressive?:
People. I drove from JFK. You drive for hours in a middle of nowhere, and then you come to a place packed with very bright driven people.
What was least impressive?:
Weather. BUT not in the same sense as others on this website. I'm from Russia, so I expected to see the snow :) It was just cold (not very cold) and dry (no snow). Also, I swim. Swimming pools hours could be much better.
Did anything change your opinion of the school? :
Yes - I did not know that one can catch a hi-end hockey game every week just a short walk away from the b-school. Everything with Johnson is excellent anyways, but that is like an extra bonus, topping on a cake.
Was there something you wish you had known ahead of time?:
No
Suggestions for travel to the school?:
I drove from JFK, because I had to be in NY for the weekend. Otherwise probably would be smarter to fly to a nearby airport. The drive was tiring (both ways), but I think it's just the part of it - Ithaca is in a middle of nowhere.
What other advice can you offer future interviewees?:
Read this website carefully, get ready for the questions, be conversational, be yourself, and take time while in Ithaca. There's a lot to see. I think it'd be wise to explore the place where you're going to spend two years and over 100K.
