MBA: Darden Admissions Chat (Jan. 16, 2002)

Please feel free to let us know if you would like to be informed of future chats by sending e-mail to chat@accepted.com. We would also be interested in knowing if you would prefer a different format or different topics.

Chat Transcript:

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:09:12 PM)
Let's start.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:09:14 PM)
First I want to welcome you all to Accepted.com's Darden Admissions Chat.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:09:28 PM)
I also want to welcome Dawna Clarke, Director of Admissions, and Matt Kaness, second-year student at Darden. And last but not least, I want to welcome Cindy Tokumitsu and Paul Bodine, two of Accepted.com's editors.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:09:44 PM)
Dawna should be joining us in a few minutes. She is having technical problems.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:10:03 PM)
Matt has an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and worked for the US PTO before coming to Darden. At Darden, when he is not serving as an elected student representative on the Darden Student Admissions Committee, he is pursuing his interest in strategic marketing, operations, and small business management. This summer he worked as an internal consultant for a large diversified manufacturing company. After earning his MBA, he wants to work for a manufacturing and marketing company in a general management position.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:10:14 PM)
Thanks to everyone for joining.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:10:41 PM)
I encourage dialogue and discussion, but I would like to suggest a structure to make it easier to follow the threads of conversation. So here is the protocol: We will post material to the chat. If you have a question on that material, please type a "?" and then your question. I and/or other participants will reply. If one of you wants to comment on the current topic, please jump right in. If you want to start a different topic, please type "?".

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:10:54 PM)
If the crowd this evening grows and a moderated chat would be more beneficial, we'll switch to that format to avoid the chaotic feel that some other chats have had. When we switch to a moderated chat, all your questions will come to me. I will choose the questions that have the broadest application and those questions will appear in the main window for Dawna and Matt to reply to. If and when we switch to a moderated format, you will only see your question in the main window if it is chosen.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:11:06 PM)
Final request: We would like to avoid the brief summary of qualifications (or even the long laundry list) followed by the question, "Can I qualify?" Or "What are my chances?" This isn't the forum for that kind of question.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:11:14 PM)
Other than that limitation, this is your chance to ask questions about Darden's program and admissions policies. But I would like to take advantage of my position as host and ask the first questions.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:11:44 PM)
Matt, what are the three qualities Darden likes to see in its applicants?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:11:50 PM)
Linda- I'm speaking with Dawna by phone and will be answering for the two of us...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:12:07 PM)
OK. I'm sorry.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:12:09 PM)
DAWNA: 1- strong academics, 2- strong interpersonal and communications skills, 3- strong professional experience.

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:12:18 PM)
Matt, I guess I will go ahead and ask you my one big question. I am a reapplicant. I was accepted last year but due to very unfortunate circumstances I could not enroll and didn't defer. What do you think my best options are this year? what should I focus on and how will my application be looked?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:12:33 PM)
samadam, please hold your question for a moment.

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:12:37 PM)
ok

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:12:57 PM)
1. Darden has had many exciting changes in the last year: A new dean, a larger, more modern facility, and a larger class. Matt and Dawna, how are these changes affecting students and admissions?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:13:15 PM)
I'll let Dawna answer first...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:13:21 PM)
OK.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:13:35 PM)
DAWNA: affecting admissions by high volume of apps as well as the quality of the applicant pool. The timing is perfect, since we're expanding to 300 (25% increase).

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:14:11 PM)
MATT: for me as a student the biggest change has been the excitement of the new dean. Dean Harris is very much student focused in regards to his stress on the educational experience and trying to create the greatest opportunities for graduating second years and alumni.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:15:42 PM)
How do you evaluate re-applicants? Are re-applicants at a disadvantage or advantage? When you review the new application, do you have the evaluation from the previous year's app?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:16:16 PM)
DAWNA: we regard re-applicants favorably b/c it shows their strong commitment to attending Darden. We encourage re-applicants to contact the office to get feedback on their initial application and we try to give candid advice on the possibility of being admitted the following year. We do compare the previous to current applications. The good news is: many times Darden students were accepted as re-applicants!

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:17:34 PM)
Letters of rec. Do you expect busy recommenders to fill out your specific form? Do you look negatively on letters sent by the recommender to all the schools an applicant is applying to and merely attached to your form?

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:17:36 PM)
Matt, just to follow up on the reapplicant question, if I was accepted last year but didn't enroll, may I still receive feedback to make an even stronger application this year

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:18:07 PM)
DAWNA: we prefer recommenders to fill out the Darden specific form...for example, we look for evidence of strong interpersonal skills, team orientation, and strong communication skills. These qualities are important to the success of the student b/c of the Darden culture and case-study method using the generic form tends to not be as helpful to AdCom.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:19:29 PM)
After Matt answers samadam's question, the floor is open for your questions.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:19:37 PM)
s-

dkooyman (ID=41) (Jan 16, 2002 9:19:50 PM)
?Matt what is your opinion of the Boot Camp reputation

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:19:53 PM)
Dawna says Yes!

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:20:11 PM)
dk- the boot camp reputation is something that comes up frequently from those who don't know the program well. When I got here, I was actually looking forward to a rigorous program, and the school does a great job at not only integrated multiple subject matter, but also integrating non-academic activities into the curriculum, such as having 6 recruiting programs in place of class time to help in this regard. Also, we're given many timely Fridays off when students usually travel for second and third round interviews. Lastly, the previous dean liked to say that it's more appropriate to call it "astronaut training" than boot camp, since Darden attempts to create the optimal you!

uva_cav (ID=47) (Jan 16, 2002 9:23:04 PM)
?Dawna, How has the increased volume of applicants affected the way you process applications? Have you had to shorten the time spent on each application to stay on schedule? Or has the response time lengthened?

ELJETFAN (ID=51) (Jan 16, 2002 9:23:09 PM)
If I have a campus visit planned, can I receive the case for the day in advance and prepare like any other student might, albeit on my own?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:23:14 PM)
What would you advise an applicant with less than two years of full-time work experience who wants to attend Darden?

wei (ID=38) (Jan 16, 2002 9:23:17 PM)
Matt, about the recommender, my recommenders told me they did answer all the questions on the form. But they didn't answer it separately according to the form format. They integrated them together into a letter. Is that OK?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:23:29 PM)
Let's wait before posting more questions.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:23:37 PM)
DAWNA: to uva_cav, that's an excellent question. We don't want to compromise, so we have increased the size of the staff to ensure the same amount of attention.

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:24:05 PM)
Matt, what % of the class has Darden accepted so far.. I haven't applied yet I am shooting for the Feb 11 deadline.  What does the situation look like right now?

wolf (ID=52) (Jan 16, 2002 9:24:13 PM)
This question is for Ms. Clarke - Do you accept people without any experience? I've heard some schools admit some people with no experience, and as a college senior, I'm curious to know what Darden does.

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:24:14 PM)
oops sorry Linda

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:24:15 PM)
ELJETFAN next...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:24:24 PM)
I forgive you.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:24:27 PM)
EL, Yes!

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:24:56 PM)
When I visited, that's exactly what happened, so when you schedule, just ask and they should help you coordinate for the case...

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:25:11 PM)
Linda's next...

ELJETFAN (ID=51) (Jan 16, 2002 9:25:12 PM)
Thank you

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:25:39 PM)
DAWNA: if at two years, if the quality of work experience is strong, I would still encourage to apply. The average years of work experience tends to be 3.5-4.0 years, but there are several students with only two years, but not that many with less than two.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:25:53 PM)
What would be "strong"?

dcman (ID=54) (Jan 16, 2002 9:26:36 PM)
I was wondering how you process the Consortium (CGSM) applications. Do you have a time line for that, or do you process the applications as soon as they come in? Thanks.

wolf (ID=52) (Jan 16, 2002 9:26:40 PM)
Thank you:-)

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:26:49 PM)
DAWNA: "strong" work experience meaning looking at progression- where the applicant started and where they are when they apply...while not a requirement, if you've had the opportunity to manage people, projects, or budgets, I would recommend highlighting that in the application.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:27:01 PM)
Any straight out of college?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:27:51 PM)
DAWNA: no b/c of the case-method program, work experience is essential to be successful at Darden, and therefore haven't taken someone straight out of college for several years.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:28:01 PM)
Wei is next.

wei (ID=38) (Jan 16, 2002 9:28:32 PM)
Thank you, Linda

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:28:40 PM)
Could you repost the question.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:28:46 PM)
A few people just joined us.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:28:53 PM)
Wei...

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:29:17 PM)
DAWNA: that would be the second best option, but again the recommendation form is the preferred format.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:29:28 PM)
Samadan is next.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:29:39 PM)
DCman...

wei (ID=38) (Jan 16, 2002 9:29:49 PM)
Could my recommenders integrate all the questions on the form into a letter, but not in the format of answering separate questions?

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:29:51 PM)
I asked about what % of the class has been admitted so far.. curious since i feel i am late in the process

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:30:02 PM)
DAWNA: we process them as soon as they come in, but the process to evaluate them takes up to six weeks.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:30:05 PM)
Samadam...

uva_cav (ID=47) (Jan 16, 2002 9:30:21 PM)
?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:30:22 PM)
DAWNA: only about a third had been admitted so far.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:30:29 PM)
dcman...

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:30:46 PM)

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:30:52 PM)
good :)

wei (ID=38) (Jan 16, 2002 9:30:56 PM)
Just posted my question again

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:31:11 PM)
wei...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:31:13 PM)
Wei, he already answered your question. I think dcman is next.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:31:37 PM)
DAWNA: same answer as before... the Darden form is preferred.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:31:45 PM)
DCman- what's your question?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:31:50 PM)
uva_cav, please go ahead.

dcman (ID=54) (Jan 16, 2002 9:31:52 PM)
I had a question about the CGSM application process. Do you hold them and process them all at once together, or have you already started processing them.

cpcollin (ID=53) (Jan 16, 2002 9:31:52 PM)
Dawna, can you tell me how (if at all) the quantity of applications this year may affect the use of the waitlist? In addition, what actions can waitlisted applicants take in the short term to help their case? (apologies if this has already been addressed) Thanks!

wei (ID=38) (Jan 16, 2002 9:32:07 PM)
Thank you

ELJETFAN (ID=51) (Jan 16, 2002 9:32:15 PM)
On the pose your own essay question, what do you think works best? A fun, creative essay or something very business like that addresses potential gaps?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:32:25 PM)
DAWNA: they are processed in the order they are received from the CGSM office.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:32:37 PM)
cpcollin....

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:33:19 PM)
DAWNA: hard to predict. I've been at Darden for 11 seasons, and there is quite a bit of variability wrt the waiting list. I would recommend a waitlist candidate. Send in any additional info that wasn't part of the original application, keep in touch with us, and let us know of your continued interest in Darden. Last year, we extended deferred admission to some candidates from the waiting list, and we may do the same this year.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:34:38 PM)
eljetfan...

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:34:39 PM)
Matt/Dawna another reapplicant question. Since I interviewed last year and was accepted is it fine if I don't interview this year. I am currently out of the country and it would be very hard for me to interview again this time....

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:34:59 PM)
DAWNA: I recommend something that comes from the heart b/c we're trying to get a sense of not only your qualifications but also your personality and priorities We don't really have a bias toward either of the two options...just be sincere and be yourself.

cpcollin (ID=53) (Jan 16, 2002 9:35:26 PM)
Dawna, I will take your advice to heart, thanks!

Simee (ID=40) (Jan 16, 2002 9:35:49 PM)
?What's the average GMAT score...and what's the minimum that Darden requires.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:36:02 PM)
Simee then samadam...680 for this year's entering class, with a range of 550's to high 700's.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:36:41 PM)
samadam...

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:37:18 PM)
DAWNA: I would recommend writing a letter explaining current circumstances and the admissions committee would understand.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:38:08 PM)
To all: Dawna and I are enjoying the chat, and hope that you feel comfortable asking all types of questions, including those specific to the student-experience.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:38:30 PM)
Matt, how is your job search going?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:38:41 PM)
Wow- a tough one first. Actually, I am most likely returning to my summer employer, but have had some success with other companies, so relatively speaking it's been going well for me.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:38:57 PM)
I thought you were warmed up by now.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:39:04 PM)
That's great!

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:39:32 PM)
What about your fellow students?

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:39:38 PM)
Matt.. here is a social experience specific question.. is it true that Darden is trying to attract more international students? in your experience... how do internationals find the Darden experience?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:39:42 PM)
Another tough one...It's been a very mixed bag. Darden students tend to do very well in their summer internships and get offers to return, so that has been very encouraging for our class, but it's been tough this year at attaining on-grounds offers, b/c a lot of programs have been discontinued for the year or have been pushed back to the spring. Finally- although there are still some without offers, we are doing very well compared to most programs since our class size is smaller and the alumni network is very strong and tight.

dkooyman (ID=41) (Jan 16, 2002 9:39:55 PM)
How has on campus recruiting been this year?

cpcollin (ID=53) (Jan 16, 2002 9:40:04 PM)
Student-life question. Are there any programs/activities that give students the opportunity to work with the other graduate schools (Med, Law, etc...). Even beyond that, what about the Charlottesville community on the whole? Thanks

dcman (ID=54) (Jan 16, 2002 9:40:06 PM)
If my gmat was lower than I expected, and I wanted to take the GMAT exam, should I contact your AdCom and let you know of the next date? Would you hold an application in that case until I retook the GMAT? Thanks.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:40:41 PM)
Let's hold the questions for the moment.

Mr. Bill (ID=56) (Jan 16, 2002 9:40:51 PM)
Hi Matt, for the last 10 years I have been a modestly successful entrepreneur and have built a multi-million dollar company that I am in the process of selling. Due to personal reasons and time restraints I was unable to finish an undergraduate degree. I see an MBA as an excellent springboard to reach future career objectives and wondered if exceptions are made on the requirement for an undergraduate degree if a strong business and leadership track record is evident.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:42:03 PM)
samadam....

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:42:16 PM)
DAWNA: last year's entering class had 30% international students and the goal for next year is to maintain the 30%.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:42:27 PM)
dkooyman is next.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:42:41 PM)
My personal experience has been incredible with classmates from all over the world, in the case-method environment, you can be discussing a economics case on Singapore, and one of your classmates is from there, and can testify to the case facts and issues, which really makes for a rich discussion.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:43:14 PM)
DK, did Matt answer your question when he answered mine?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:44:21 PM)
Cpcolin...

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:44:26 PM)
thnx Matt

wolf (ID=52) (Jan 16, 2002 9:44:36 PM)
Ms. Clarke, do candidates with lots of international experience have a competitive advantage? I'm thinking about the Peace Corps if I'm unable to get the job of my choice. Your thoughts?

dkooyman (ID=41) (Jan 16, 2002 9:44:49 PM)
yup

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:44:56 PM)
Darden is known for it's tight community, and it's relationships with other university schools and area businesses is consistent. The list is too extensive to discuss here, but if you go to the Darden website and look under the student clubs page, you'll see how involved Darden students become in the c'ville community. Hope that helps.

great, thanks!

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:46:37 PM)
DAWNA: yes, we'll hold the application until the next date, BUT make sure you write a letter to the committee indicating this.

dcman (ID=54) (Jan 16, 2002 9:46:52 PM)
Had a question about telling adcom when I retake the gmat. Do you want the scores immediately, and will you hold my application if I state that I am taking it again to improve my score?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:47:08 PM)
Who's next?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:47:14 PM)
Mr. Bill's question is up now

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:47:37 PM)
Let me generally state that if you are admitted, and you are wavering or are committed to attend Darden and just want to visit, I HIGHLY recommend attending Darden Days in April. It was an incredible experience for me and my wife, and really solidified my decision.

wei (ID=38) (Jan 16, 2002 9:47:54 PM)
I heard that the applicants pool in Tuck this year has soared, is that true? about what percentage?

wei (ID=38) (Jan 16, 2002 9:48:31 PM)
sorry, I mean has the application pool in Darden also soared?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:48:51 PM)
Matt, I think you missed Mr. Bill's question.

Mr. Bill (ID=56) (Jan 16, 2002 9:48:59 PM)
Thanks Linda

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:49:02 PM)
DAWNA: OUR applicant pool is up by 27.8%, and can't talk to Tuck's numbers, but don't let our numbers scare you, because we're increasing the student class size by 25%.

wei (ID=38) (Jan 16, 2002 9:49:27 PM)
Thank you!

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:49:29 PM)
He asked if someone with a lot of quality experience but without a bachelors can be admitted.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:49:53 PM)
DAWNA: as for having no bachelors, it's possible. there's been two students that have been admitted, but not probable.

ks (ID=44) (Jan 16, 2002 9:50:28 PM)

Mr. Bill (ID=56) (Jan 16, 2002 9:50:36 PM)

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:50:39 PM)

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:50:49 PM)
Mr. Bill I am rooting for you :)

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:50:50 PM)
Then wei's and ks' question.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:50:51 PM)
no problem... good luck!

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:51:02 PM)
Wolf- what's up?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:51:19 PM)
Actually wei's was already answered.

Mr. Bill (ID=56) (Jan 16, 2002 9:51:25 PM)
I'll hire everyone in my next venture... who needs a placement center. ;-)

wolf (ID=52) (Jan 16, 2002 9:51:33 PM)
I asked the question about international experience?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:52:03 PM)
wolf- I'm not seeing your question in the transcript...can you repost?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:52:16 PM)
He asked how is int'l experience viewed?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:52:23 PM)
ok...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:52:29 PM)
Should he join the Peace Corps if not accepted?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:52:31 PM)
DAWNA: favorably...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:52:34 PM)
Please correct me if I got it wrong.

wolf (ID=52) (Jan 16, 2002 9:52:39 PM)
Thank you Linda!

Simee (ID=40) (Jan 16, 2002 9:52:50 PM)
?What's the % of female students in a class......

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:53:09 PM)
Matt.. general question.. many MBA programs have Fridays free... I see Darden has 3 case days on Fridays.. pretty hectic. how are the weekends at Darden? specially in the first year..

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:53:10 PM)
generally international experience, if "strong" as discussed above, is favorable.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:53:10 PM)
ks, please post your question so it will be on the screen.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:53:17 PM)
if not accepted peace corps experience is generally looked upon as favorable, but each case is obviously individual.

Mr. Bill (ID=56) (Jan 16, 2002 9:54:01 PM)
Thanks for the input Matt. I actually didn't mean hire everyone... I meant partner. Glad you loved your experience at Darden. Good luck going forward.

ks (ID=44) (Jan 16, 2002 9:54:07 PM)
is there anyone with a prior (intl) MBA in the class and how does Darden view them

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 9:54:10 PM)
I second Samadan question: how does the workload evolve over the semesters

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:54:15 PM)
ks...

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:54:29 PM)
DAWNA: no, there isn't anyone that has earned an MBA elsewhere...international or domestic.

ks (ID=44) (Jan 16, 2002 9:54:59 PM)
would Darden allow people with prior MBA

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:55:16 PM)
I'll answer the workload question now...

Munak (ID=60) (Jan 16, 2002 9:55:22 PM)
By what date should an accepted student prepare their financial aid application/materials?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:55:32 PM)
wow- another tough question. Academic work load definitely feels like it lightens up from semester to semester, but Darden does a pretty good job of keeping the work coming all first year, since the entire first year is a core curriculum. The second year is entirely electives, which really gives you the flexibility to be as intense about your studies as you want to be. As for first to second semester first year, the first semester is VERY intense, because interviewing for internships hasn't started, so you're able to focus mostly on academics while the second semester you seem to be splitting your time between studies and interview-preparation which the school whole-heartedly supports, and gives students a lot of flexibility for recruiting. Lastly, you just seem to get used to working hard, so it naturally feels easier as you go.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:55:52 PM)
Let's hold the questions for a couple of minutes.

samadam (ID=31) (Jan 16, 2002 9:56:25 PM)
and weekends? heavy load or family time? I am a family man so that something v. imp to me

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 9:56:44 PM)
Family man status for me too

dcman (ID=54) (Jan 16, 2002 9:58:44 PM)
Of the 30 countries represented at Darden, are almost all of them Europe, Asia, and Latin America? Do you have any students from Africa, for example?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:58:50 PM)
long version of the answer :)

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:58:54 PM)
Simee asked about the % of women in the class...

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 9:58:56 PM)
Thank you

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:59:03 PM)
Good answer.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:59:04 PM)
students from Africa... Yes, four in total!

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:59:12 PM)
% of women is 30% for this year's entering class.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 9:59:16 PM)
Munak, can you repost your question?

Simee (ID=40) (Jan 16, 2002 9:59:49 PM)
?Apart from strong academics and work work experience.....what kind of extra curricular activities do Darden look for..........

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 9:59:56 PM)
I am personally friends with two of them.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:00:03 PM)
Linda, who's next?

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:00:07 PM)
What international exchange programs are available?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:00:20 PM)
munak, but he hasn't reposted.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:00:23 PM)
Simee.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:00:32 PM)
I have one too: Do you resent it or appreciate it when applicants who are wait-listed, write and say "I have heard from School X and have to respond to them by Date Y. Is there any possibility you could give me an answer before Date Y. I would prefer to attend your school."

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:00:37 PM)
simee...

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:00:57 PM)
DAWNA: we don't have a bias toward or against any type of extra-curric's. We have seen strong applicants who have been involved in: fraternities/sororities, athletics, student gov't, community service, etc etc etc. We like to see applicants who were committed to something outside of their academic students and work.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:02:10 PM)
Mevoy is next.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:02:17 PM)
And then me.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:02:33 PM)
Mevoy then Linda...

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:02:39 PM)
Hellooooooooooooooo Mevoy!

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:02:41 PM)
Int'l program

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:02:46 PM)
I'm getting punchy :)

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:02:46 PM)
What is offered

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:02:55 PM)
Yes sir

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:03:00 PM)
I can take this one...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:03:06 PM)
I'd think you're getting carpel tunnel the way you're typing!

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:03:23 PM)
not only are approximately 30% of the cases studied internationally set, but there is a GBE program (Global Business Experience) that is offered in both the first and second year in over 7 countries world wide as well as multi speak-series and clubs that host international events and activities.

samadam (ID=64) (Jan 16, 2002 10:03:32 PM)
http://www.darden.edu/mba/mba_exchange.htm   mevoypacali this might help

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:03:56 PM)
Cheers, samadam

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:04:03 PM)
Thanks.

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:04:18 PM)
And Matt, thank you

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:04:26 PM)
your welcome. good luck!

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:04:37 PM)
meant "you're"... I AM punchy!

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:04:44 PM)
Linda next...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:05:02 PM)
One more from me too. What do you think is the best and most distinctive aspect of the Darden experience? What do you think it needs to improve or what is it working to improve?

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:05:13 PM)
previous question first...

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:05:17 PM)
OK.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:05:32 PM)
DAWNA: in fairness to all applicants we'll make attempts to respond early in the normal response time... if there are extenuating circumstances, then let us know and we'll try to work with you.

samadam (ID=64) (Jan 16, 2002 10:05:32 PM)
Matt.. here is another trivia type question.. how many students have been hired (full time, class of 02) by consulting firms like McK, bain, BCG, mercer monitor etc.. strategy consulting firms

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:06:40 PM)
Three more questions: Linda's second one, then samadam's, then one more. Linda, the most distinctive aspect of the Darden experience is the combination of the case/integrated curriculum with the closed-knit, collaborative environment. This really allows students to take risks in a setting that is both challenging and supporting and helps you to become the optimal you, which is something that you don't necessarily hear occurring at other programs that might be larger, or more impersonal, or more competitive for various reasons.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:06:45 PM)
OK. Thanks.

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:07:03 PM)
How many West European are in the 2003 class?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:08:34 PM)
That is an unusual combination. Usually case method is associated with competition.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:09:23 PM)
As far as case = competitive...perhaps that's the standard that was set at other case-schools due to much larger school size or brand image, but Darden is definitely the opposite.

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:09:24 PM)
Samadan and the mevoy...

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:09:28 PM)
ok. samadam... what was your question?

Linda Abraham (ID=42) (Jan 16, 2002 10:09:47 PM)
Are the big strategy firms hiring?

samadam (ID=64) (Jan 16, 2002 10:09:48 PM)
what % of your class ;02 has been offered jobs with firms like mckinsey bain and bcg

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:10:45 PM)
I don't have the specific numbers to quote, and suggest you contact the career services director Anne Harris to find out exact numbers, but I'll say that we did have a number of interns at mckinsey, bain, and bcg, but I'm not sure those students' status for full-time.

samadam (ID=64) (Jan 16, 2002 10:11:01 PM)
will such info be given to prospective students? :)

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:11:36 PM)
will it be provided???

samadam (ID=64) (Jan 16, 2002 10:11:43 PM)
will it? I am asking you

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:11:50 PM)
to tell you the truth I'm not exactly sure, but it's worth a shot, and if you have any troubles contacting her, you can always contact dawna or me, and we can try our best to satisfy your inquiry. Hope that helps!!!

dkooyman (ID=41) (Jan 16, 2002 10:12:30 PM)
How about financial support do many students receive grants, scholarships etc.

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:12:42 PM)
Last question!

dkooyman (ID=41) (Jan 16, 2002 10:12:55 PM)
someone else can go

samadam (ID=64) (Jan 16, 2002 10:13:13 PM)
ok sure and thanks a ton.. I don't doubt Darden's recruiting stats at all .. historically they have been great just wanted to see how they are in this bad economy

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:13:17 PM)
I had asked about West Europe representation

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:13:33 PM)
Approximately 1/3 of international students are from Europe, but I don't have the specific break down between Western and non-Western Europeans.

mevoypacali (ID=61) (Jan 16, 2002 10:14:28 PM)
OK, well 1/3 is quite a lot in any case. Thank you

MattKanessDarden (ID=35) (Jan 16, 2002 10:14:32 PM)
Thanks everyone. Dawna and I can be reached at the following email addresses to answer anymore questions...
