2003 INSEAD MBA Admissions Chat with Johanna Hellborg

2003 INSEAD MBA Admissions Chat with Johanna Hellborg

Please feel free to let us know if you would like to be informed of future chats by sending e-mail to chat@accepted.com. We would also be interested in knowing if you would prefer a different format or different topics.

Chat Transcript:

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:04:06 PM)
Let's start.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:04:15 PM)
First I want to welcome you all to Accepted.com's first ever INSEAD Admissions Chat.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:04:25 PM)
I also want to welcome Johanna Hellborg, INSEAD's Admissions Manager, and Irina Schneider-Maunoury, Leila Murat and Christina Vincensini, members of the admissions staff at INSEAD. And last but not least, I want to welcome Cindy Tokumitsu and Paul Bodine, two of Accepted.com's editors.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:04:34 PM)
Paul will be here momentarily.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:04:44 PM)
Thanks to everyone for joining.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:05:06 PM)
I encourage dialogue and discussion, but I would like to suggest a structure to make it easier to follow the threads of conversation. So here is the protocol: We will post material to the chat. If you have a question on that material, please type a '?' and then your question. The other participants or I will reply. If one of you wants to comment on the current topic, please jump right in. If you want to start a different topic, please type '?'.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:05:25 PM)
If the crowd this evening grows and a moderated chat would be more beneficial, we'll switch to that format to avoid the chaotic feel that some other chats have had. When we switch to a moderated chat, all your questions will come to me. I will choose the questions that have the broadest application and those questions will appear in the main window for our guests to reply to. If and when we switch to a moderated format, you will only see your question in the main window if and when it is chosen. You will not see it if it is not chosen.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:05:34 PM)
Final request: We would like to avoid the brief summary of qualifications (or even the long laundry list) followed by the question, "Can I qualify?" Or "What are my chances?" This isn't the forum for that kind of question.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:05:59 PM)
Please post your questions.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:06:35 PM)
? How many students are accepted outside of Europe?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:07:31 PM)
Me , about 50% of our candidates come from outside Europe.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:07:35 PM)
When you look at a file, what do you look at first? Last? How do you review a file?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:08:10 PM)
Linda, We actually look at everything. We look at the academic side, and we also look at the professional career, the int'l experience, and personality. Recommendations are also important because they inform us about the candidate in a professional setting.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:08:14 PM)
? Is it true that half of the term is spent in France and the other half in Singapore?

bschoolbound (Jan 15, 2003 12:09:54 PM)
Once the application is submitted, about how long does the review process take? When should a candidate expect to hear about an interview (if one is going to be offered)?

cindy tokumitsu (Jan 15, 2003 12:09:59 PM)
How do you weight the different components -- academic, professional essays, GMAT -- in your review?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:10:57 PM)
bschoolbound, the review can take up to 16 weeks, but we are currently changing from rolling to staged admissions. New dates will be posted on web next week.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:11:36 PM)
Cindy, we are looking for the overall balance in the application and in the personality.

bob (Jan 15, 2003 12:11:47 PM)
Do you receive applications for January prior to March 1?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:11:54 PM)
What 3 qualities would you like to see in INSEAD applicants?

APP2003 (Jan 15, 2003 12:12:05 PM)
How soon after completing the interview should an applicant expect to receive a final decision?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:12:38 PM)
bob, yes but we don't review them.

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 12:13:01 PM)
What percentage of applicants are interviewed, and what percentage of them are accepted?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:13:22 PM)
Linda, bright academically, like intensity, passionate about other cultures.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:14:05 PM)
App2003, it can take between 2 to 4 weeks.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:14:17 PM)
Me - You have the opportunity to spend at least one period on another campus and up to 2 periods. The one year program is a total of 5 periods. The first 2 are spent on the campus you applied for. As of period 3 you may opt to spend time in the other campus. We also have an alliance with Wharton.

alfredo (Jan 15, 2003 12:14:18 PM)
Is it ok to have both recommendations written by former supervisors?

ChrisC (Jan 15, 2003 12:14:31 PM)
I think the move to staged admissions will probably be positive - rolling admissions are pretty nerve-wracking.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:14:38 PM)
Johanna, could your staff take a minute to introduce themselves and say what their function is in admissions?

bob (Jan 15, 2003 12:15:01 PM)
I heard that INSEAD is the school for people that already have worked as managers. What about WE as technology leaders, do such people have a chance?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:15:16 PM)
thurston, 40-50 percent are interviewed and 60 percent are accepted after the interviews.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:15:24 PM)
alfredo, yes it is ok, we look for people who can tell us how you interact with people in a professional setting.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:15:30 PM)
How do you evaluate essays? Applicants can use a professional essay writing service to submit a great essay.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:15:41 PM)
Once accepted, would an applicant have the ability to defer to the next promotion if need be?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:16:15 PM)
? Christina, do you look for applications that clearly boast of a candidate's potential to become a great business leader?

APP2003 (Jan 15, 2003 12:16:18 PM)
Johanna, I completed my interview in mid-November but have not yet heard back from INSEAD. Should I be concerned?

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 12:16:26 PM)
irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD: What aspects are important once you are interviewed - are the "formal" aspects like GMAT, GPA etc. done at that time?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:16:46 PM)
We're going to switch to moderated mode.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:16:49 PM)
In a moderated chat, all your questions go to the moderator (me). I will choose the questions that have the broadest application and those questions will appear in the main window for our Johanna, et.al., to reply to. You will only see your question in the main window if and when it is chosen. You will not see your question on the screen if it is not picked. Please post your questions, and I will choose as many as possible from the ones you post and our guests will respond. You can also post follow up questions.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:16:52 PM)
Linda - Christina Vincensini, Admissions Officer - same functions as Leila Murat.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:16:59 PM)
Hi everybody, I am Leila Murat, Admissions Officer, in charge of file evaluation and follow-up of applications.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:17:12 PM)
bob, it is not a school for managers; it is a school for future leaders, so some have experience in mgmt, and some don't.

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 12:17:16 PM)
I am applying for Jan 2004 intake and my application should reach INSEAD by March 3rd. I took TOEFL (score: 280) on March 11, 2001. Will my TOEFL score still be acceptable, if I apply before March 11, or do I need to take it again?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:17:27 PM)
JohnNYC, deferral is possible under exceptional circumstances.

Jennifer (Jan 15, 2003 12:17:59 PM)
? Are acceptance rates higher for one campus over another?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:18:34 PM)
Ahsan, what is really meaningful to us in the essay section is to understand who you are from what you are. Be direct, upfront and sincere, and avoid any pre-packaged essay.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:18:37 PM)
ajoshi , TOEFL is valid for 2 years, so the application should reach us before March 11.

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 12:18:44 PM)
?What is the main focus of the interview beyond the information presented in the application?

Guest (Jan 15, 2003 12:18:47 PM)
Are you able to tell us when this month's decisions will go out?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:19:44 PM)
Jennifer, the process is blind. The committee does not know for which campus you are applying.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:19:48 PM)
JohnNYC- Deferrals are granted on an exceptional basis. All decisions & requests are reviewed by the Admissions Committee and are final.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:20:15 PM)
? Johanna, have applicants been accepted into the program with a GMAT score less than 600 in exceptional circumstances?

alfredo (Jan 15, 2003 12:20:19 PM)
What qualities do you look for in an applicant's extracurricular activities?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:20:25 PM)
Tom1, interviews will not only confirm a candidate's profile, but also inform us about the candidate's personality.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:20:47 PM)
Leila, do you also use the interview to check language fluency?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:21:12 PM)
me, it has been a long time since we have seen a below 600 GMAT in the programme.

mloio (Jan 15, 2003 12:21:25 PM)
Apparently, it is INSEAD's policy that if an applicant is acceptable, but class, e.g. for Sep 2003, is full, they will be offered a place in the next intake, e.g. Jan 2004. So, if someone submits an application for Sep 2003 just before the deadline and it is full, will you automatically review for Jan 2004? Will the change to staged admissions have any impact on this?

ChrisC (Jan 15, 2003 12:21:32 PM)
I understand that you sometimes ask candidates to reapply after gaining more work experience or improving their GMAT. At what stage in the selection process would this happen (initial file review or post-interview review)?

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:21:38 PM)
I understand that once interviewed, the candidate's whole profile is reviewed again in full - is that true?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:21:43 PM)
Linda, you are right. It is also one of the objectives of interviews.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:22:24 PM)
JohnNYC -- yes, that is correct.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:22:30 PM)
INSEAD has one of the highest average ages/work experiences for top MBA programs. Do you require more work experience? How much do you like to see?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:22:55 PM)
mloio, it is not exactly defined yet.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:22:58 PM)
alfredo- we don't look for anything specific in the extra-cv. It just gives us an idea of who you are and what your interests are outside of work.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:22:59 PM)
ChrisC, it can happen at both pre-interview selection and post-interview final admission stages.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:23:09 PM)
Does the applicant have to have a 4 year undergrad degree, or is a 3 year --  like we have in Canada -- also acceptable?

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 12:23:42 PM)
?I've heard that the adcom meets once a month to review the full package again along with the interview results with final decisions posted immediately. Is this true, and if so, is it better to schedule an interview immediately once invited?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:23:46 PM)
? If we have further questions, who may we contact by email?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:23:52 PM)
ahsan, yes, it is ok. We just want a university diploma.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:23:52 PM)
Linda--the average is 5, but it goes from 1 to 10.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:24:15 PM)
Do you have a minimum requirement in terms of work experience?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:24:59 PM)
Me - mba.info@insead.edu

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 12:25:10 PM)
Is the disparity in GMAT Verbal and Quantitative a big disadvantage? For example, a low Verbal in 60-65% and high Quant in 80-90%?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:25:17 PM)
Linda, there is no minimum requirement. What is important is that the person can contribute and share knowledge or an experience with classmates.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:25:17 PM)
Tom1, the interviewer names are given to the candidate and it is up to the candidate to schedule a meeting.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:25:18 PM)
Most of your students come from all over the globe - do you have specific resources set in place to assist with housing, bank accounts, and the general logistics of such a big move?

bob (Jan 15, 2003 12:25:22 PM)
Does MSc degree grant any advantage (or disadvantage) to the applicant?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:26:05 PM)
Tom1, so the faster the meeting is arranged, the better chance to be presented to the earliest Adcom meeting.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:26:22 PM)
Would international education compensate for international work experience?

ICan (Jan 15, 2003 12:26:26 PM)
How often does the INSEAD adcom meet to make final application decisions?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:26:30 PM)
bob, nothing is really an advantage or disadvantage; it is just a part of who you are.

alfredo (Jan 15, 2003 12:26:35 PM)
Has any event/information session been scheduled in North America for 2003?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:26:58 PM)
Ahsan, yes, it would count as international exposure.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:26:58 PM)
Ican, it varies from every week to every month depending of time of year.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:27:08 PM)
What are INSEAD's strengths? What is it working to improve?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:27:36 PM)
? Are there any arrangements that can be made for a tour of the campus for foreigners prior to the application deadline Mar. 1?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:27:43 PM)
alfredo, we go to North America every year. Please check on our website for dates and cities.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:27:43 PM)
I heard you don't have quotas, but you just increase marketing in parts of the world you are trying to attract - which areas are you looking to focus on these days?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:27:44 PM)
Ajoshi - we're looking for a balanced GMAT of a minimum of 70%- 75% in both the Verbal and Quant.

cindy tokumitsu (Jan 15, 2003 12:27:48 PM)
What companies and industries have been among your top recruiters in the last couple of years?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:28:36 PM)
Linda, an extremely diverse international student body and a close-knit alumni community.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:28:44 PM)
JohnNYC, our participants are using the web platform to inquire and exchange ideas. There is also a welfare manager.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:28:45 PM)
Johnnyc, actually our biggest target will be to attract women into our programme.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:29:10 PM)
How do you see recruiting shaping up for this year? Do you have any predictions for 2004?

ICMBA (Jan 15, 2003 12:29:42 PM)
I understood that some applicants have already been accepted for the Jan 04 intake before the beginning of the application period. How can it be?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:29:46 PM)
Cindy, a list of companies in on our website, but all major players in consulting, finance and industry recruit on campus.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:30:21 PM)
JohnNYC, not really, I don't think we will have an increase of applications again, but it will probably stabilize.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:30:36 PM)
Johanna, I applaud INSEAD's commitment in trying to attract more women to the MBA program!

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:30:37 PM)
ICMBA, we have not accepted any candidate applying for January 04 to date.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:30:39 PM)
Does one language proficiency have advantage over the other as a second language. e.g. I speak English and also speak German, or I speak English and also speak Spanish.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:31:17 PM)
Me - We don't have scheduled campus tours, but you are more than welcome to visit the campus and attend an information session offered every Friday afternoon. There may also be an opportunity to attend a class. Please refer to our website for more information.

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 12:31:26 PM)
?If one campus fills up faster than the other, what happens to those who are given final acceptance in, say, Feb./Mar. for Sept. 2003?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:31:31 PM)
Is there any reason INSEAD defines the essay length limits in terms of lines?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:32:06 PM)
ICMBA, you may be thinking of people accepted for earlier intakes and who for exceptional reasons were granted a deferral to Jan 04.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:32:07 PM)
Ahsan--no, there are no advantages. It is just important to master the language.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:32:11 PM)
Do you weigh differently the skills one person might have who studied and learned a language in adulthood vs. someone who was a member of a bilingual/native household?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:32:23 PM)
Tom1, you can be offered a seat on the other campus or be transferred to next intake.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:32:33 PM)
What is a common mistake applicants make in their applications?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:33:08 PM)
JohnNYC, in both cases we require certification of proficiency in the language.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:33:11 PM)
Linda, they lie and it's obvious. LOL

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:33:12 PM)
Please post your questions.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:33:40 PM)
LOL. What about honest mistakes?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:34:01 PM)
Linda - essay length limits are to help us manage the high volume of applications and demonstrate if the applicant can express their ideas in a concise manner.

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 12:34:06 PM)
? In case of multiple GMATs, is the highest GMAT score used ?

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 12:34:08 PM)
?What is done in the second (or third) review of the application after the interview has already been granted?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:34:21 PM)
Linda, to be more serious, some try to add too much info, can't be concise, or they try to write what they think we want to read.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:35:17 PM)
AJoshi, we use the most recent score, but do take into account the previous ones.

ICMBA (Jan 15, 2003 12:35:19 PM)
What could be an interesting use of the optional essay?

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:35:24 PM)
I know if you start in Jan. you can have an internship, but not everybody chooses to do one. Do many companies come on campus specifically to recruit for this internship period, or is it kind of an ad hoc process?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:35:27 PM)
? Johanna, do you consider an applicant who is modest more favorably than an applicant who is over the top in their essays?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:35:56 PM)
What is INSEAD doing differently in the face of the difficult job market?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:36:17 PM)
Tom1 - the file is reviewed again with the interview results and is submitted to the Admissions Committee for decision.

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 12:36:18 PM)
I am already invited for interviews, but have problems reaching one of the interviewers. When should I contact INSEAD?

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:36:20 PM)
How can one compensate for a low GPA?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:36:21 PM)
me, we consider honesty and sense of humour.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:36:21 PM)
ICMBA---it is entirely up to you.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:36:40 PM)
INSEAD seems to strongly discourage reapplication. Why?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:36:49 PM)
? Which schools are the biggest competitors to INSEAD in Europe? Worldwide?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:37:22 PM)
JohnNYC, many students go for a summer internship and companies recruit on campus specifically for those.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:37:24 PM)
Linda, we are trying to use networks such as the alumni network to find jobs.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:37:39 PM)
Ahsan--excellent GMAT.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:38:03 PM)
thurston - right away.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:38:08 PM)
How many of your graduates had jobs upon graduation?

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 12:38:18 PM)
How does INSEAD translate the non-GPA undergrad scores (ex 60% in the undergrad degree)?

mloio (Jan 15, 2003 12:38:23 PM)
Linda, I saw your question on essay lengths - in terms of lines? This is the first I have heard of this. The app forms I have seen have word limits. Can someone please clarify this?

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:38:27 PM)
By excellent GMAT, do you mean 650+ or 700+ or 725+ ?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:38:58 PM)
Linda, because if we think there is a possible future fit with INSEAD, we say so by asking for a new GMAT or more professional experience. If not, we are final so that the candidate can go on with alternative plans.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:39:00 PM)
Ahsan--average on campus is 704.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:39:17 PM)
Thanks.

ChrisC (Jan 15, 2003 12:39:28 PM)
Past years' applications had the length requirements in lines, but this year I think it's in words.

alfredo (Jan 15, 2003 12:39:32 PM)
INSEAD is my first choice. Can you suggest what I can do to show my interests?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:39:37 PM)
AJoshi, we are equivalent to all universities around the world.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:39:41 PM)
Looks to me like the old paper version mentioned lines for the two first essays but the online version gives a word limit.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:39:46 PM)
mloio, it is words and not lines.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:39:50 PM)
Linda - 75% had jobs upon graduation.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:40:05 PM)
Can I submit the sealed transcripts with the application, or must they come directly from the school?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:40:18 PM)
Thanks for clarifying.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:40:32 PM)
alfredo - send your application ASAP.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:40:47 PM)
Ahsan--you can submit yourself.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:40:48 PM)
Please post your questions.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:41:03 PM)
Is there an advantage to applying at different times? Earlier than later? Do you accept more people for your January intake or your September intake?

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:41:10 PM)
Do you know how many of the other 25% have jobs within a few months of graduation?

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 12:41:38 PM)
?I got transcripts from my home country when I last visited. Could I send that along with the application?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:41:51 PM)
Linda, until the 1st of Feb. there is no difference, but in staged admissions, it will be better to apply in rounds 1 and 2.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:42:12 PM)
What's new at INSEAD? In INSEAD admissions?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:42:32 PM)
JohnNYC- we currently don't know.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:42:32 PM)
I guess stages or rounds are new in INSEAD admissions, and word limits instead of line limits, but other than that.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:42:35 PM)
Linda, staged admissions is a big change.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:42:43 PM)
AJoshi--fine, make sure they are translated in English if needed.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:42:47 PM)
How many stages are you planning?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:42:57 PM)
Linda, 3 per intakes.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:43:25 PM)
Why are you making the change?

alfredo (Jan 15, 2003 12:43:31 PM)
For the September 2004 intake, what is the earliest date by which I can submit my application? Can you also please clarify the differences between the new staged admission and the rolling admission? I missed the first five minutes of the chat. I am sorry if this has already been discussed.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:43:38 PM)
How much does it cost and how much financial assistance is available?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:43:44 PM)
? If you state that INSEAD is the ONLY school that you want to attend in the application essay, would the selection committee frown upon this?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:44:01 PM)
Linda, because of the increase of applications.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:44:46 PM)
In a one year programme, do the students start the recruitment process immediately on starting, or do you schedule the recruitment activities for later periods?

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 12:44:49 PM)
?I haven't taken French in school for about 5 years but I am still reasonably fluent (indicated level 3 on App). What is expected in the interview....should I be taking a refresher course to prepare for the interview?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:45:22 PM)
Me- it just tells us about your commitment.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:45:51 PM)
Ahsan--the tuition is 42,000 euros. Upon admission, candidates are eligible to apply for a number of scholarships and the ABN AMRO Global MBA Loan covering full tuition.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:45:56 PM)
alfredo, Sept. 2004 intake? late September 2003.

alfredo (Jan 15, 2003 12:46:07 PM)
Sorry typo again, I meant Jan 2004 intake. I am too excited :)

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:46:10 PM)
? How do you measure a student's confidence level, leadership, skills and maturity?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:46:23 PM)
JohnNYC, students are involved from day one with cms, our career management service.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:46:44 PM)
Tom1- please check the language policy on the website for the level required. A refresher course is always advisable.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:46:53 PM)
alfredo, Jan 2004 - first deadline for round 1, March 28.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 12:46:58 PM)
What does the admissions committee weigh more - current leadership experience or future potential?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:47:13 PM)
Are students sometimes interviewed in their second language?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:47:48 PM)
me, by looking at several items in their application: work, outside work activities, essay style.

bob (Jan 15, 2003 12:47:58 PM)
Russian is my mother tongue, but I have no documents that can prove the language proficiency level. What should I do?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:48:10 PM)
Please post your questions.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:48:32 PM)
ColinT- we take both into account. Potential, of course, for those without extensive work experience.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:48:44 PM)
Bob--you do not have to prove your native language.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:49:06 PM)
Linda, they often interview in English or in the language of the country where you reside.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:49:23 PM)
? Is it okay to include a third reference letter in the application, or does it hinder your chances?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:49:38 PM)
Does INSEAD value community service and extra-curricular activities? What role do they play in admissions?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:50:26 PM)
Me- It's ok if a 3rd reference letter helps us understand your profile better.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:50:29 PM)
Linda, we look at that because it tells us a lot about the person: what they enjoy, etc.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:50:47 PM)
I do not know French at all. Is that a drawback?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:50:49 PM)
Linda, and it is important because personality fit with INSEAD is crucial.

Tanis (Jan 15, 2003 12:50:50 PM)
? Why is proficiency in another language necessary?

gravy (Jan 15, 2003 12:50:53 PM)
How do the grades have to be reported in the transcripts? Is there a standard format?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 12:51:24 PM)
What are some of the differences between admissions criteria at INSEAD and at other top int'l b-schools?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:51:43 PM)
Tanis, INSEAD is an international school and it show the candidates' commitment to having an int'l career.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:51:54 PM)
Gravy- we need original or certified copies.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:52:05 PM)
? It must be so fun to be so close to Paris! Do you go often????

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:52:07 PM)
Ahsan--knowledge of French is not required.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 12:52:09 PM)
Do students ever have serious work permit issues in recruiting? For example, non-European people who might want to work in Europe?

bob (Jan 15, 2003 12:52:16 PM)
I have to choose regarding the second recommendation letter between my thesis advisor and the CEO of a consulting company I worked for before my current job. Which is preferable, assuming that both know me well?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:53:28 PM)
Linda, the biggest difference is the international motivation and exposure.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:53:31 PM)
JohnNYC- it happens of course, especially in the difficult job market condition.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 12:53:36 PM)
Does the Adcom prefer students that have a desire to focus on finance, international business, etc... as opposed to information technology?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:53:41 PM)
me, Paris is nice. We as staff have the opportunity to go sometimes, but students don't have much time left over after study and house-parties to go to Paris.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:53:41 PM)
Bob --choose the people who know you well.

mloio (Jan 15, 2003 12:53:44 PM)
Sorry, asked this question a bit awkwardly before. If someone submits an application for Sep 2003 just before the deadline and it is full, will you automatically review it for Jan 2004?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:53:57 PM)
? Are you in the process of updating your website?

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:54:01 PM)
Is it easy to spend one term in Singapore, or is there a queue and one may not make it?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:54:34 PM)
Me--it is updated all the time.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:54:45 PM)
ColinT- INSEAD strongly encourages diversity. No preferred sector.

bob (Jan 15, 2003 12:54:52 PM)
Is it possible to find some kind of job on faculty for students' spouses, even voluntary? My wife is a professional programmer.

Tanis (Jan 15, 2003 12:54:55 PM)
?Johanna--so, is a language spoken at home weighed differently than a language learned?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:55:14 PM)
mloio, we will review your file independently from seats and then let you know.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 12:55:16 PM)
I don't have a preference between either campus - but are either of them easier to get into as opposed to the other? I am speaking just of the number of applicants at each site.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 12:55:41 PM)
Which recommendation letter is preferable, the one from my Director who I directly report to and work with daily, or from Sr. VP who is even above VP, but does know me?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:55:51 PM)
? Who is the Dean of INSEAD?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:56:15 PM)
Bob, partners do apply for jobs on campus; it will depend on the work permit.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:56:29 PM)
Tanis, there are a lot of questions about weighing different things in an application. Our school is about diversity, so we are open to everything and then look at the overall balance.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:56:46 PM)
Ahsan- a 2 month period exchange is guaranteed. Additional periods are granted for those who want them according to availability.

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 12:56:52 PM)
I am doing my interviews at the moment. Assuming I finish them at the end of the month and I get through the admission process - how big is the chance to still enter Sep. 2003 FBL?

alfredo (Jan 15, 2003 12:56:56 PM)
What kind of personalities will thrive in the INSEAD experience?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:56:59 PM)
Me--Gabriel Hawawini

Me (Jan 15, 2003 12:57:47 PM)
?Do you require a CV in European format or American?

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 12:57:52 PM)
?How many terms can one spend on the other campus? For example: if one starts in Singapore, how many periods can one spend on Paris campus -1,2 or 3?

boolietuli (Jan 15, 2003 12:57:56 PM)
Hi, just joined, had to put my son to sleep, which brings me to my questions: What percentage of students are parents? Does INSEAD have its own facilities for children of students?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:58:02 PM)
ColinT, the committee selects blindly for both campuses, so it is not easier, but you have more chances to get the campus you want if you apply early.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:58:14 PM)
Ahsan- the person who works with you on a daily basis and who will be in a better position to assess your managerial potential.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:58:26 PM)
me, we don't require a CV.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:58:33 PM)
Alfredo--those who like intensity and challenges.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 12:58:40 PM)
bob, it is preferable to send us the letter from the person that has worked directly with you and knows you the best, regardless of title (CEO).

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 12:59:49 PM)
boolietuli, 50 percent come with partner and/or family. There is no structure at INSEAD, but partners organize among themselves to take care of children.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:00:05 PM)
AJoshi, one period of 2 months guaranteed 4 months after start of programme; additional 2 to 4 months granted upon availability.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:00:08 PM)
? Is it wise to update quantitative skills through courses prior to MBA acceptance at INSEAD?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:00:26 PM)
thurston, I cannot guarantee if there will be places available for Sept 2003.

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 1:00:30 PM)
?Does it help the application to add a CV?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:00:33 PM)
Me- definitely wise.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:00:46 PM)
AJoshi, no.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:00:58 PM)
? How much professor-student interaction is feasible?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:01:34 PM)
me, there is quite a lot of interaction; there are no facilities only for professors or only for students.

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 1:01:35 PM)
Do people ever have work permit problems during the recruitment process? Do companies come to INSEAD knowing that they are recruiting from an international student body and are more willing to support non-work permit people, especially in this economy?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:01:38 PM)
? Does INSEAD value teamwork or individual work in classes?

boolietuli (Jan 15, 2003 1:01:40 PM)
Thanks, Johanna.

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 1:02:02 PM)
Christina: Could you clarify this? Is it 50:50 or should I look forward to Jan. 2004? Of course no detailed numbers, but a direction....

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:02:41 PM)
Me-- there is a strong focus on teamwork.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:02:42 PM)
JohnNYC, work permit issues are bigger when the economy is down.

boolietuli (Jan 15, 2003 1:02:49 PM)
I have read somewhere that FBL for September 2003 is close to being full - is that true?

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 1:03:42 PM)
? Is one with no background or credits in undergrad in Finance and Economics at a disadvantage? and is it advisable to do a course in basic finance and economics before applying ?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:03:45 PM)
? Johanna, Can you apply to both the regular MBA and the EMBA to increase your chances?

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 1:03:50 PM)
What is the average salary of fresh graduates who opt to work?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:03:56 PM)
boolietuli, not yet.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:04:12 PM)
thurston, no guarantee, but a good chance.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:04:52 PM)
Ahsan- 80000 euros.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:04:55 PM)
What do you mean by blindly? Must I specify a particular campus? Can a person be denied to one location and accepted at the other?

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 1:04:56 PM)
Christina: Thanks ;-)

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:05:02 PM)
? Christina, are there opportunities to work part time on campus while attending school?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:05:05 PM)
AJoshi--if you feel you are weak in quant, you could do a math course.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:05:15 PM)
me, you can apply to both. It will not increase your chances; we are looking at different profiles.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 1:06:10 PM)
How much more does EMBA cost?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:06:14 PM)
me, for partners or for participants?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:06:15 PM)
? Are there different selection committees for EMBA and MBA? What are the differences in profiles?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:06:42 PM)
? Christina, for participants?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:06:44 PM)
Ahsan- around 80000 euros.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:06:45 PM)
ColinT, it means that the admissions team know your campus preference, but when the admissions committee makes decisions, they don't know for which campus the candidate is applying.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 1:07:22 PM)
OK. Johanna has said we can continue for up to an additional half hour. Please post your questions.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:07:27 PM)
me, participants have no time to have a part-time job.

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:07:49 PM)
Ha Ha. Thanks, Christina!

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 1:08:01 PM)
Please post your questions.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:08:09 PM)
me, we cover 80% of a 2 year program in 10 months.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:08:20 PM)
Me- EMBA requires participants to come with more work experience and specifically more management experience.

bob (Jan 15, 2003 1:08:21 PM)
I have worked closely with the CEO of our company and INSEAD alumni from the day of its foundation. Since then, the company grew and now the contact is less frequent. Is it wise to use his recommendation?

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 1:08:28 PM)
?If a spot is granted in Sing, what are the odds that one can switch to France in Per. 3 and 4?

cindy tokumitsu (Jan 15, 2003 1:08:32 PM)
Are there any industries or sectors that you feel are under-represented among your students and that you'd like to increase?

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:08:37 PM)
Are the odds of getting into either campuses the same? I am assuming that one location will probably have a greater number of applicants.

boolietuli (Jan 15, 2003 1:09:21 PM)
Interview questions: 1) what percentage of applicants get invited to interviews? 2) of those interviewed, how many normally get accepted? 3) when is the next adcom to decide regarding interview invites? 4)Does it matter if you are interviewed by admissions officers, recent alumni or past alumni?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:10:09 PM)
Cindy, we are always happy to get more applications from candidates with unusual backgrounds.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:10:14 PM)
ColinT, odds are the same to enter INSEAD. As of now there are often more seats available in Singapore, but this is now changing as people discover the advantage of spending time in Asia.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:10:20 PM)
Tom1- one period is guaranteed starting as of P3 and participants can bid for an additional one.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:10:21 PM)
How do companies view graduates of a one year program, compared to graduates of a two year program?

Do you have any age limit for MBA students?

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 1:10:29 PM)
?I am in the interview stage and am in the process of accepting another school. When will the next round of FINAL decisions be made?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:10:51 PM)
Gravy--35 years old.

sujata (Jan 15, 2003 1:11:27 PM)
What are the unusual backgrounds like?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:11:31 PM)
boolietuli, 40-50 percent interviewed, 60 percent accepted. You are always interviewed by alumni. Committee dates are confidential.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:12:29 PM)
Sujata-- lawyers, doctors, those in the entertainment industry.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:12:30 PM)
tom1, we usually have committees every second week

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:12:49 PM)
tom1, it depends when interviewers return their reports.

boolietuli (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:05 PM)
Thanks, Johanna.

bob (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:06 PM)
Johanna, according to your numbers >25% of applicants are accepted. But the published statistics is worse than that. Is it true?

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:08 PM)
If one already earns more than an MBA graduate, would it go against him?

sujata (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:10 PM)
ok, how about language students, do you have many of those?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:15 PM)
sujata, we have had an opera singer and a ballet dancer on campus.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:41 PM)
bob, it is best to have someone that knows you well write your recommendation, but most importantly someone who remembers you.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:50 PM)
bob, it varies from 20 to 25 percent.

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:52 PM)
? For Jan 2004, can I send an application before March 1st?

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:13:58 PM)
Speaking of the Singapore campus, what advantages are there to being in Singapore? Also, as that campus is newer, are there benefits technology wise (wireless access, IT enhanced teaching) of being at the newer campus?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:14:00 PM)
ColinT- no difference. They know that INSEAD students thrive under pressure, and are true global managers.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:14:12 PM)
Ahsan, no.

Tanis (Jan 15, 2003 1:14:16 PM)
? Johanna--is it wise to tell an interviewer that you are already considering another school?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:14:27 PM)
Sujata- we do have such candidates.

sujata (Jan 15, 2003 1:14:43 PM)
irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD, thanks.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:14:55 PM)
AJoshi, first deadline will be March 28 and nothing will be reviewed before that. First answer will come May 16.

ICMBA (Jan 15, 2003 1:15:02 PM)
Why are lawyers such an unusual background?

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 1:15:16 PM)
How is IT infrastructure in FBL? Wireless internet for laptops and so on.

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 1:15:30 PM)
Thanks, Johanna.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:15:57 PM)
Tanis, you are free to say what you want.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 1:16:13 PM)
How many funds must one have to start MBA - 10K euros, 20K euros - before getting any financial assistance?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:16:15 PM)
ICMBA - not study lawyers (10% on campus) but who work as lawyers.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:16:46 PM)
ColinT--on Singapore campus you really get to know everybody in your class and technology is better developed in SPR.

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 1:16:48 PM)
?Is laptop computer a requirement?

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 1:16:51 PM)
Does the ABNAMRO loan cover any living costs, or just tuition?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:17:07 PM)
thurston, not sure about IT infrastructure.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:17:19 PM)
AJoshi, not a requirement, but strongly advised.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:17:24 PM)
If an applicant wants to be a part of the FBL campus, but all of the slots are filled, will they get an option to attend the Singapore campus?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:17:34 PM)
JohnNYC- it covers tuition, not living costs.

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 1:17:43 PM)
How are entrepreneurs seen by adcoms, especially with companies that grew big?

boolietuli (Jan 15, 2003 1:17:59 PM)
I understand that the financial aid process starts only following admission. How long does it take to find out if you have won an INSEAD scholarship or received an ABN-Amro loan? When do you have to pay your first payment to confirm your place?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:18:02 PM)
? In the application, are you looking for a candidate who is focused on what they want the degree for?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:18:25 PM)
ColinT- yes they will be proposed a place in the Singapore campus.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:18:47 PM)
Ahsan--you should budget 20,000 euros for your living expenses. Unfortunately, financial assistance is not guaranteed.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:18:57 PM)
thurston, we love entrepreneurs!

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 1:19:10 PM)
Given that INSEAD prides itself on the geographic and ethnic diversity of its student body, are there quotas for different nationalities?

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 1:19:29 PM)
Christina: Sounds good, why exactly?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:19:42 PM)
Me- it's part of what we look for.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:20:03 PM)
thurston, because we are an entrepreneurial school in spirit!

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 1:20:05 PM)
Is it their initiative, willingness to take risk? what?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:20:17 PM)
Linda, no quotas. We work on a very diverse marketing strategy to gain a wide variety of candidates.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:20:28 PM)
Are applications sent in the last week of Jan. for fall 2003 considered, or is that late date equivalent to the 'final round' at other schools?

boolietuli (Jan 15, 2003 1:20:28 PM)
Irina, how much should a family of 3 budget?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:20:52 PM)
Linda, can you rephrase your question about risk?

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 1:21:17 PM)
Sorry. Thurston, I believe, asked about entrepreneurship and why it is valued. I was just trying to add to that. I know Christina said because you are an entrepreneurial school in spirit, which is fine, but I was trying to go a little deeper.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:22:17 PM)
How is the racial atmosphere? Are there a lot of clashes?

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:22:23 PM)
What are the 2 most common reasons applicants are denied?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:22:27 PM)
ColinT- they are considered, but if all slots for Fall 03 are filled, you will eventually be proposed a place in the next intake.

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 1:22:44 PM)
? Is the ABN-AMRO loan guaranteed to all admitted applications?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:22:47 PM)
? Would you consider a candidate that was academically weak, but demonstrates a great deal of passion in obtaining an MBA specifically from INSEAD, especially because he/she wants to work in Europe?

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:23:02 PM)
Boolietuli-- scholarship decisions are announced one month before the start of the program, loan review takes 4 weeks, and the deadlines are given once you are admitted. The first payment is made three weeks after admission.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:23:47 PM)
AJoshi--ABN AMRO loan unfortunately is not guaranteed.

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 1:23:52 PM)
?I've always heard that the admissions process itself is not competitive for a limited number of seats; rather INSEAD will accept anyone they feel is INSEAD material and will open seats up or offer a seat in the next promotion if necessary....please comment?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:23:59 PM)
Linda, INSEAD is a small and independent school and has some entrepreneurial spirit such as opening a campus in Asia for example, but the intensity of INSEAD MBA fits also with the personality of entrepreneurs.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 1:24:27 PM)
How many seats are there in total?

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 1:24:51 PM)
? What is the basis for approval of ABN AMRO loan?

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:25:02 PM)
me, not really, motivation for something does not make up for weak academics, but a great work experience, or int'l experience or extensive x-CV activities can.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:25:08 PM)
ColinT- academic capacity and no fit with the school in terms of international outlook or personality.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:25:43 PM)
Boolietuli--it really depends on the life style, approximately 25,000 and up to 30,000 euros.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:26:21 PM)
Ahsan- 600 seats in FB, 250 in SGP in 2003.

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:26:57 PM)
AJoshi-- one of the major criteria is to prove that you could support your self financially throughout the program.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 1:27:09 PM)
Are living expenses lower in Singapore or higher?

boolietuli (Jan 15, 2003 1:27:17 PM)
Thanks, Irina. Another threesome question - Do families of 3 get preference regarding housing?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:27:20 PM)
ColinT, we have over 65 nationalities on campus with no dominant culture represented. At INSEAD our participants learn to work together as a team.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:27:36 PM)
tom1, it is not really like that. We are being more and more competitive, but should we have someone really good we have seats on next intake. But this might change with staged admissions.

ICMBA (Jan 15, 2003 1:28:02 PM)
How are the accommodations in Singapore?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:28:55 PM)
Ahsan- we estimate the same total living expense budget for both campuses. Split is different.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:29:05 PM)
ICMBA, let's see: nice apartments buildings, with swimming pool, close access to campus.

ColinT (Jan 15, 2003 1:29:22 PM)
As far as student satisfaction - which campus do they prefer?

Me (Jan 15, 2003 1:29:26 PM)
Thank you, Johanna, Irina, Leila, Christina. You have been a great help, and thank you, Linda and Accepted.com for making this environment available! It has been great to chat with the folks from INSEAD!

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 1:29:33 PM)
Last questions.

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 1:29:52 PM)
Practical question: ;-) How much will a student in FBL have to bother with "living things" like housing, washing, cooking etc.?

JohnNYC (Jan 15, 2003 1:29:54 PM)
Thanks for your time!

irinaschneider-maunouryINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:30:03 PM)
Boolietuli--participants rent houses and apartments in the area and it is an independent search, so it is entirely up to you.

ICMBA (Jan 15, 2003 1:30:16 PM)
Thanks, Johanna, that's all I ask for.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:30:40 PM)
ColinT, definitely Singapore: nice weather, new building, cozier atmosphere, better tech structure.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 1:30:41 PM)
Is there an upper limit on experience? I mean like is 12+  years too much?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jan 15, 2003 1:31:09 PM)
thurston, we do have electricity and dry cleaning pick up on campus!

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:31:21 PM)
Ahsan, it's not only a matter of numbers, but also quality of experience.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 1:31:23 PM)
Thank you again all for participating this evening. Special thanks to Johanna and the INSEAD staff for their assistance.

Thanks to all the participants and in particular to Linda and the INSEAD team.

Tom1 (Jan 15, 2003 1:32:13 PM)
?When do you contact employers to confirm employment (even if indicated on app not to, some schools do, so just before matriculation?) Do you confirm salary at that time, as well?

AJoshi (Jan 15, 2003 1:32:16 PM)
Thank you, Johanna, Irina, Christina, Leila. You have been a great help today and for the admissions process at INSEAD.

thurston (Jan 15, 2003 1:32:23 PM)
Thank you.

Ahsan (Jan 15, 2003 1:32:26 PM)
Thanks. Very valuable discussion.

johannahellborginsead (Jan 15, 2003 1:32:50 PM)
tom1, we don't do that often; we trust people.

Linda Abraham (Jan 15, 2003 1:33:06 PM)
Have a very good day/evening! Good luck with your applications!
