2004 INSEAD MBA Admissions Chat with Johanna Hellborg

2004 INSEAD MBA Admissions Chat with Johanna Hellborg

Please feel free to let us know if you would like to be informed of future chats by sending e-mail to chat@accepted.com. We would also be interested in knowing if you would prefer a different format or different topics.

Chat Transcript:

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:14:17 PM)
First I want to welcome you all to Accepted.com's INSEAD Admissions Chat.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:14:28 PM)
I also want to welcome Johanna Hellborg, INSEAD's Associate Director of Admissions, and Leila Murat and Christina Vincensini, admissions officers at INSEAD. And last but not least, I want to welcome Cindy Tokumitsu and Paul Bodine, Accepted.com editors.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:14:35 PM)
Thanks to everyone for joining.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:14:46 PM)
1) How many places are still open in the second round?

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:15:01 PM)
I encourage dialogue and discussion, but I would like to suggest a structure to make it easier to follow the threads of conversation. So here is the protocol: We will post material to the chat. If you have a question on that material, please type a '?' and then your question. The other participants or I will reply. If one of you wants to comment on the current topic, please jump right in. If you want to start a different topic, please type '?'. If the crowd this evening grows and a moderated chat would be more beneficial, we'll switch to that format to avoid the chaotic feel that some other chats have had. When we switch to a moderated chat, all your questions will come to me. I will choose the questions that have the broadest application and those questions will appear in the main window for our guests to reply to. If and when we switch to a moderated format, you will only see your question in the main window if and when it is chosen. You will not see it if it is not chosen.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:15:20 PM)
Final request: We would like to avoid the brief summary of qualifications (or even the long laundry list) followed by the question, "Can I qualify?" Or "What are my chances?" This isn't the forum for that kind of question.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:15:27 PM)
Leon: we are currently still dealing with 1st round. But we don't give out the number of seats available.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:15:34 PM)
Other than that limitation, this is your chance to ask questions about INSEAD's program and admissions policies.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:16:02 PM)
What's new at INSEAD?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:16:32 PM)
Linda, there are always new things happening.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:16:46 PM)
For example?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:16:49 PM)
Mostly we have switched from rolling to staged admissions.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:16:57 PM)
How is that going?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:17:14 PM)
Linda, we have just started, but it seems to be a good way of dealing with our candidates.

Frank (Jun 12, 2003 12:17:26 PM)
?Is there any discernable advantage to conducting one's alumni interviews sooner rather than later?

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:17:59 PM)
Okay. I just heard rumors that nearly all places were already given in round one for the Jan #04 intake.....Can I start the program in Singapore and then switch to France after P1?

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:18:00 PM)
Are you planning to distribute acceptances evenly among the different rounds or stages?

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:18:09 PM)
? What is the age of your oldest applicant

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:18:30 PM)
Linda, we will accept a higher number of people in rounds 1 and 2 than in round 3.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:18:58 PM)
smx: oldest applicant 35; average age 28.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:19:08 PM)
Frank, you will be sent to interviews only if and when you are pre-selected for interviews.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:19:17 PM)
Are you trying to attract a younger crowd than you did let's say two years ago?

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:19:47 PM)
? how many students +- at 35

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:19:54 PM)
Linda, we are a little bit more open to people with none or 1-2 years of professional experience, but they have to be outstanding in other aspects.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:20:14 PM)
leon: you can switch as of P3 due to a very heavy workload during P1 & P2.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:20:32 PM)
How does your application volume this year compare to previous years? What are you anticipating for the 2004 intakes?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:21:30 PM)
Linda, the number of apps seems stable, but we have not received all the applications yet.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:21:46 PM)
And then I can stay in France for P3-P5, correct? What about the rumour that a large percentage of places was already given in round one :-)?

Frank (Jun 12, 2003 12:21:51 PM)
?Once the initial hurdles of essays, GMAT and recommendations have been cleared by a candidate and they are pre-selected for an interview, is the interview the only bar left to clear, or are all the other aspects revisited prior to making a final decision?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:22:27 PM)
smx, we are talking about a very small pool of students at 35 or plus, especially considering that we are opening an EMBA programme this fall.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:22:40 PM)
Frank, if we decide to send you to interviews, we wait for the reports to come back and your file goes through a committee and is evaluated on all aspects again. Interviews will only be part of applications as the rest.

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 12:22:54 PM)
What's the single most significant difference, as you see it, between the INSEAD and U.S. business school models?

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:23:32 PM)
? Does the EMBA not only really apply to those that are within the region, being part-time ?

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:23:35 PM)
Concerning your answer to SMX. I think it is a real advantage that INSEAD accepts mainly applicants with at least 3-4 years experience except for very special cases.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:23:52 PM)
Johanna, the INSEAD Web site defines its mission as "An educational institution, our mission is to promote a non-dogmatic learning environment that brings together people, cultures and ideas from around the world..." What makes INSEAD less dogmatic than other business schools?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:24:47 PM)
Paul, we are extremely international, with 65-70 nationalities and none is above 10%.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:25:18 PM)
Leon, our goal is diversity, and we want to make sure that everyone contributes in one way or another (work, studies, languages, extra-curricular activities, etc.)

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:25:52 PM)
smx, I would not say so. Since it is on a one week every four weeks curriculum basis, it attracts more than just the people in the region.

CindyTokumitsu (Jun 12, 2003 12:26:04 PM)
? Has the proportion of US applicants to INSEAD changed or remained the same over recent admissions cycles? If changed, increased or decreased?

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:26:10 PM)
BTW, Christina and Leila, please also feel free to answer my questions.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:26:14 PM)
leon: participants are guaranteed one campus switch; for those who wish to stay for an additional period, it will depend on availability of space, but P3-P5 is not possible.

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:27:21 PM)
? As a non EU applicant, the EMBA doesn't seem practical. Traveling to France once a month? That's what I meant.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:27:55 PM)
Do students who ultimately want to work in the US have a harder time finding a job than those who want to remain in Europe? How about other regions of the work, specifically India and China?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:27:59 PM)
Cindy, it has grown a little bit to be at around 7-8%.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:29:11 PM)
Let's assume one has passed the admission committee successfully, yet all places are full. Is INSEAD's old policy of offering a place at the next intake still valid? I've heard that this has changed. Please specify how.

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 12:29:42 PM)
Which business schools are your biggest competitors for applicants?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:30:14 PM)
smx, the candidates currently accepted come from different parts of the world. They will travel to Fontainebleau or Singapore. What they look for is interactions with people from other backgrounds and cultures. Traveling does not seem to be an issue.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:30:54 PM)
Paul_Bodine: Wharton, MIT, Harvard.

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 12:31:09 PM)
Interesting. Not LBS?

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:31:18 PM)
My thoughts exactly.

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:31:36 PM)
What about IMD ?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:32:00 PM)
Leon, you can be placed on stand-by or get a seat on the other campus. If there are no seats available, you will have to reapply.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:32:10 PM)
Linda, INSEAD promotes an interactive learning environment based on the diversity of participants, a participative teaching methodology, group work, faculty involvement in teaching to various programmes, etc.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:32:24 PM)
Is "stand-by" what we in the US call a "wait-list"?

Frank (Jun 12, 2003 12:32:25 PM)
?Beyond putting a face to a candidate's application, what are the goals of the interview?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:32:50 PM)
Linda, yes.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:32:57 PM)
Thanks.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:33:27 PM)
So now is INSEAD more open to reapplications than in the past when it would allow an accepted student to attend a later intake, but discouraged re-applicants in the strongest possible terms?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:33:42 PM)
Paul_Bodine: oh yes, LBS & IMD too, but our programme is very unique, which sets us apart from others.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:33:55 PM)
Frank, it is a unique opportunity for you to know more about the programme from someone who has done it. For us, we will know more about your interpersonal skills and your personality from the point of view of someone from the INSEAD community.

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:34:20 PM)
? EMBA, does the candidate need to be sponsored totally? (financially)

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 12:35:36 PM)
Are there countries from which you would like to see more applicants (i.e., because they have been under-represented at INSEAD in the past)?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:35:57 PM)
Linda, people who have been accepted will be able to re-apply if we cannot provide them a seat. However, those who are rejected are not encouraged to re-apply.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:36:06 PM)
smx: no, I don't think so, but I recommend contacting the EMBA office directly for further details.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:36:15 PM)
Paul, we would love to have more applications from the African continent.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:36:15 PM)
I see. Thanks for clarifying.

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:36:44 PM)
? How many (%) of graduates are placed in US?

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:36:50 PM)
But if one has already been accepted, why does one have to reapply? Seems illogical to me :-).

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:37:07 PM)
Where do INSEAD grads obtain most of their jobs? Do graduates from outside Europe have a harder time obtaining work than those from European countries?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:38:23 PM)
Leon, you are accepted or not after having gone through an evaluation to see if you meet our criteria, but also because you compete against other candidates. So if the programme is full, you will have to apply again and compete against the next pool of candidates.

CindyTokumitsu (Jun 12, 2003 12:39:08 PM)
I believe that you generally discourage rejected applicants from reapplying, but do you single out some promising applicants and suggest that they re-apply? In such cases, are you looking for deeper work experience? Do you provide feedback to these applicants to help them improve their next application? Also, are such applicants re-interviewed?

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:39:15 PM)
Oh yes, let's hope places are still free then :-)! How long after one has sent in a complete application does it normally take to get an invitation to interview (or not)?

ICMBA (Jun 12, 2003 12:39:50 PM)
Any profile you would like to see more often?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:39:59 PM)
smx: 9% of 2002 graduates were placed in US.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:40:06 PM)
Cindy, if we ask promising applicants to re-apply, we specify whether it is more professional experience or international experience, for example.

CindyTokumitsu (Jun 12, 2003 12:40:25 PM)
Thank you.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:40:40 PM)
Leon, please refer to our staged admissions deadlines; you will have a very precise idea when you will get answers.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:41:14 PM)
ICMBA: not really, we're always looking for diversity.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:41:29 PM)
Okay, I'll wait until the 11th of July, then. Are there any countries which are under-represented?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:42:04 PM)
Leon, Kazakhstan seems currently under-represented :-)

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:42:09 PM)
Linda, 66% of our grads got a job in Europe. No, there is no big difference between Europeans and non-Europeans. 50% of our grads get a job in a country different then their own.

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 12:42:26 PM)
Which aspect of your program or curriculum has improved the most in the past 5 years?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:42:41 PM)
Leon, I think there are a lot of countries under-represented. Why do you ask? Maybe I can give you a better answer.

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:42:55 PM)
? Does one need a better than average GMAT if their GPA % is low?

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:43:33 PM)
How many of your students would like to start their own company after the MBA?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:44:09 PM)
Leon, it varies, but it seems that more than 40% of our alumni are entrepreneurs.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:44:19 PM)
smx, yes a good GMAT will help balance a low GPA.

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 12:44:21 PM)
Concerning your new rounds admission system, is it a pure rounds system, or a rolling system inside a round (as at Kellogg)?

Frank (Jun 12, 2003 12:44:53 PM)
?In your view, what are the top ranking Canadian undergraduate business schools? Does the quality of the undergraduate institution play a large role in your selection process?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:45:03 PM)
Paul_Bodine: INSEAD electives always reflect current business trends. The new curriculum effective Sept. 2003 offers 10 electives rather than 7.

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 12:45:43 PM)
Leila, what do you consider to be a good GMAT? The balance between Q and V?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:45:48 PM)
Jonas, can you specify what you mean by pure or not?

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:46:08 PM)
This is very interesting! But probably most of them work at a company directly after the MBA and then start their business. Correct?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:46:22 PM)
Leon, it depends.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:47:01 PM)
Sure, as always.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:47:14 PM)
Frank, we look at the quality of the undergraduate institution together with the grades obtained, but the evaluation of a profile covers many other elements of the file.

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 12:47:16 PM)
Johanna, pure when no decision is taken about admissions before all the applicants of the round are reviewed (even the 1000 applying the last day).

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:47:31 PM)
I know from your Web site and our previous chat that INSEAD prides itself on its multiculturalism, entrepreneurship, and independence. How do those qualities manifest themselves?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:47:49 PM)
JONAS: average GMAT is 710. Balance 70-75% in both Q and V.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:47:55 PM)
We have already discussed the diversity of INSEAD's student body, so could you focus on the other two qualities?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:48:21 PM)
Jonas, nearly pure. We start to take a few decisions a little ahead of time, but nearly 90% of our applications are taken at the same time.

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:48:59 PM)
? Since my company will sponsor me for EMBA, but not allow me to be away for 1 week a month, would you discourage me from applying to the FT MBA?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:49:31 PM)
Linda, do you mean how do we assess these qualities in a file?

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 12:49:37 PM)
Johanna, so even on the 11th of July, you will have seats... :-) Do you have any ideas of how many people will be admitted during the 3rd round?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:49:46 PM)
smx, I don't know your profile. Why don't you call EMBA and discuss, and then make your decision?

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:49:56 PM)
How do you assess those qualities in a file, and how are those qualities manifest in the program?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:50:11 PM)
Jonas, less than in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:50:25 PM)
? For a poor GPA, would one need better than 710, or will the school average be sufficient?

CindyTokumitsu (Jun 12, 2003 12:50:43 PM)
? How does INSEAD view the career-changer applicant?

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 12:50:52 PM)
Johanna, lol...... yes..... and how many were admitted during the 1st and 2d? ;-)

leon (Jun 12, 2003 12:51:06 PM)
Many former MBAs argue that it might seem better to pursue a two year MBA if one wants to concentrate on entrepreneurship (i.e.. Harvard). Why is INSEAD also a perfect fit for this?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:51:10 PM)
Cindy, more than 60% go for a career change.

CindyTokumitsu (Jun 12, 2003 12:51:27 PM)
Interesting! Thanks.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:51:31 PM)
smx: it really depends on the entire profile.

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 12:51:44 PM)
What's the biggest mistake applicants make in their essays?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:52:04 PM)
Jonas, more than in round 3 ;-). Let me remind you that admittance for round 1 is July 11. So we are not even in round 2, and we don't give out the numbers of seats per round.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:52:10 PM)
Paul_Bodine: dishonesty.

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 12:52:23 PM)
Merci.

em8dang (Jun 12, 2003 12:52:28 PM)
?Is there a first selection of the applicants based on their GMAT score?

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:52:34 PM)
Is INSEAD checking the accuracy of applications?

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:54:06 PM)
? how many (%) engineers do you have/accept ?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:54:17 PM)
Leon, it really depends on your personality! Don't choose a 1 or 2 year MBA because you are told to do so. It's a matter of liking intensity or not, wanting to get an MBA quickly or not. INSEAD has its entrepreneurial strike in the school itself. Opening another campus, for example. INSEAD is not tied to a university or to a state, so it is very independent.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:54:22 PM)
Linda, INSEAD attracts entrepreneurial profiles who in turn contribute in class and a lot of electives evolve around the subject. Not all the selected applicants have this quality, but can develop it on campus.

Frank (Jun 12, 2003 12:54:26 PM)
Dishonesty, eh? I knew I should have left out that 'water to wine' bit.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:54:56 PM)
LOL

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:54:59 PM)
Linda, we check that from time to time.

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 12:55:04 PM)
Johanna, thanks for your answer....lol.....it is not possible to have a little idea?.. a range?.. ;-) is it as at Stanford?..... 1 or 2 admitted students... ;-) How long should a recommendation letter be?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:55:48 PM)
smx, we have 30% engineers on campus.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:56:10 PM)
Jonas, a recommendation letter should be the length needed for your referee to talk about you!

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 12:56:10 PM)
Which firms are the major recruiters at INSEAD?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:56:13 PM)
em8dang: selection of applicants is based on a balance of 4 criteria: academic capacity, international motivation, managerial potential & personality.

em8dang (Jun 12, 2003 12:56:28 PM)
?How important is the interview in the process?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:56:52 PM)
em8dand, as important as the rest of your application!

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:57:10 PM)
? Do you value community service?

em8dang (Jun 12, 2003 12:58:05 PM)
?I understand that there are usually 2 interviews with alumni. What if their recommendations differ?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:58:09 PM)
smx, we look at everything that is important to a candidate: work, passion, hobbies, community service, etc. Just tell us what you have done!

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 12:58:47 PM)
Does the choice of the campus impact on admissions?

CindyTokumitsu (Jun 12, 2003 12:59:15 PM)
? If an applicant has a lower GPA and has taken college courses post-college and earned A's, does that mitigate the low GPA to some extent, in terms of demonstrating academic capability?

smx (Jun 12, 2003 12:59:27 PM)
? Should one attach community service supporting documentation in the application?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 12:59:49 PM)
Jonas, the admissions committee does not know to which campus you applied. It is a blind process in terms of campus.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:00:12 PM)
em8dang: it is more of an opinion than a recommendation. The interviews are another element of the application.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 1:00:15 PM)
Do you emphasize to invite famous/interesting business people? How do you compare to Harvard/Wharton in this area?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:00:45 PM)
Cindy, everything is taken into account, so whatever you think is important and can balance a weakness, put it in the file.

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 1:00:50 PM)
And when is the final campus orientation decided? How does it work?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:01:24 PM)
smx, not necessarily. We believe what you say.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:01:44 PM)
Linda, major recruiters by sector: consultancy: McKinsey, Bain, BCG etc../Finance: JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Barclays etc... Industry: Eli Lilly, L'Oreal, General Electric, Shell etc... You can get a full list on our website.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:02:27 PM)
leon: we don't emphasize, they just come here. By the way, Jack Welsh was here last month.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 1:02:50 PM)
Thanks.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:02:55 PM)
Jonas, when you are admitted, we offer you a seat on the preferred campus. If it is full, you can confirm a seat on the other campus or be on waitlist.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 1:03:00 PM)
yep, I heard this from one of the current students.

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 1:03:07 PM)
Are you doing anything special to recruit applicants from Eastern European countries?

leon (Jun 12, 2003 1:04:11 PM)
If one is accepted, do you provide support to find scholarships?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:04:25 PM)
Paul, we have been recruiting in Eastern Europe for a long time and currently have 5-7% from this region.

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 1:05:29 PM)
Johanna, I read that INSEAD does not encourage reapplication, but if an applicant is interesting and the entry is full, you offer deferred admissions. is Is this correct?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:05:38 PM)
leon: there is a very helpful section on the INSEAD website with a complete list of scholarships.

em8dang (Jun 12, 2003 1:06:12 PM)
?How does the partnership with Wharton work? Does one have to be accepted to both MBAs to spend some time at Wharton?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:06:31 PM)
Jonas, you can read the beginning of this chat about this. But, basically, if there are no seats, you will have to reapply.

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 1:07:13 PM)
Do you agree with the perception that U.S. applicants are more comfortable talking about their achievements or marketing themselves than non-U.S. applicants? If so, what advice would you offer non-U.S. applicants in this respect?

JONAS (Jun 12, 2003 1:07:25 PM)
Johanna, thanks, I will read it.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 1:08:37 PM)
When, exactly, does your program start in Jan '04?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:08:42 PM)
Paul, I would say that US applicants sometimes "boost" their achievements a little bit more :-). But we just advise everyone to be honest about their achievements.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:09:10 PM)
Leon, it usually starts on the first Monday in January.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:09:19 PM)
Leon, at 9 am ! ;-)

rseasr (Jun 12, 2003 1:09:20 PM)
What % of seats gets filled during R1 itself; is applying in R2 an issue?

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:09:53 PM)
rseasr, we accept more in rounds 1 and 2 than in round 3, so it is tougher to get in in round 3.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:09:54 PM)
em8dang: participants may take one elective course in Wharton. It is an alliance, so there is no need to be accepted to both MBAs. Just keep in mind there are limited seats available, which are awarded through a lottery system.

rseasr (Jun 12, 2003 1:10:26 PM)
What weight is given to international work experience while applying? What % of students have prior international work experience?

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:12:34 PM)
rseasr , we look at the candidate's international experience, but take into account the candidate's country of origin. Nearly all our students have previous international work experience.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 1:12:49 PM)
The INSEAD representatives have kindly agreed to extend the chat until 10 minutes after the hour. So please post your questions.

leon (Jun 12, 2003 1:13:11 PM)
Just coming back to one of your answers stating that you accept more applicants with less experience. What's the percentage you are aiming at with students who have 1-2 years experience?

em8dang (Jun 12, 2003 1:13:19 PM)
Christina, how many seats per class?

rseasr (Jun 12, 2003 1:13:54 PM)
So is it possible to enter INSEAD if one has no prior international work experience?

smx (Jun 12, 2003 1:13:57 PM)
? What is the requirement on the 2nd language?

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:14:14 PM)
em8dang: 860 per year.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:14:15 PM)
leon, a small %.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:14:44 PM)
rseasr, yes, but you have to be exceptional in other dimensions!

rseasr (Jun 12, 2003 1:15:48 PM)
Does having worked in MNC, wherein one has interacted with foreigners, count as international work experience?

rseasr (Jun 12, 2003 1:17:07 PM)
Do students on Spore campus have access to interviewing facilities with companies visiting FB, and not Spore?

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 1:17:12 PM)
Does "international experience" mean you have worked outside your home country, liaised with people outside your own country, studied abroad, or worked for a multi-national firm?

leon (Jun 12, 2003 1:17:21 PM)
Johanna & Christina, thanks for your time and humour! Hope to see you in Jan.!

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:17:49 PM)
rseasr, for native English speakers, the requirement is to have a good working knowledge of a second language and be able to prove it at a certain date before the start of the programme.

JohannaHellborgINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:18:19 PM)
Linda, it can mean a lot of things. We look at the quality of this experience. Some people work in an int'l firm and talk several languages every day, and some travel a lot and live in other countries and never interact with people from other countries!

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 1:18:41 PM)
Working knowledge as in speaking, or is reading enough?

smx (Jun 12, 2003 1:18:42 PM)
Thanks, everyone. Hope to see you soon.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 1:18:59 PM)
That's true, too.

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 1:19:19 PM)
Thank you again all for participating this evening. Special thanks to Johanna, Christina, and Leila staff for their assistance.

ChristinaVincensiniINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:19:26 PM)
rseasr: it depends on the work experience.

LeilaMuratINSEAD (Jun 12, 2003 1:19:34 PM)
Paul have you ever worked in a language without speaking?

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 1:19:48 PM)
Got you there, Paul. :-)

Paul_Bodine (Jun 12, 2003 1:19:49 PM)
I see your point :)

Linda Abraham (Jun 12, 2003 1:19:55 PM)
We look forward to seeing you at future chats. If you would like to be notified of future MBA chats, please send an e-mail to mbachat@accepted.com .
