2005 HEC MBA Admissions Chat with Joshua Kobb

2005 HEC MBA Admissions Chat with Joshua Kobb

Please feel free to let us know if you would like to be informed of future chats by sending e-mail to chat@accepted.com. We would also be interested in knowing if you would prefer a different format or different topics.

Chat Transcript:

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:07:25 AM)
First I want to welcome you all to Accepted.com's HEC MBA Admissions Chat.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:07:49 AM)
I also want to welcome Joshua Kobb, HEC's Development Director, and Neno Wei and Wynn Davies, current students at HEC.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:07:57 AM)
Thanks to everyone for joining.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:08:08 AM)
I encourage dialogue and discussion, but I would like to suggest a structure to make it easier to follow the threads of conversation. So here is the protocol: We will post material to the chat. If you have a question on that material, please type a '?' and then your question. The other participants or I will reply. If one of you wants to comment on the current topic, please jump right in. If you want to start a different topic, please type '?'.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:08:18 AM)
If the crowd this evening grows and a moderated chat would be more beneficial, we'll switch to that format to avoid the chaotic feel that some other chats have had. When we switch to a moderated chat, all your questions will come to me. I will choose the questions that have the broadest application and those questions will appear in the main window for our guests to reply to. If and when we switch to a moderated format, you will only see your question in the main window if and when it is chosen. You will not see it if it is not chosen.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:08:25 AM)
Final request: We would like to avoid the brief summary of qualifications (or even the long laundry list) followed by the question, "Can I qualify?" Or "What are my chances?" This isn't the forum for that kind of question.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:08:44 AM)
Other than that limitation, this is your chance to ask questions about HEC's program and admissions policies.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:09:23 AM)
OK. Let me start.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:09:24 AM)
With the first 2005 deadline roughly one week (April 26) away, do you have any advice for HEC applicants?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:09:37 AM)
For Neno and Wynn, what do you like best about HEC?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:09:53 AM)
Concerning deadlines, the first step is to choose your school, then prepare the application so it is as strong as possible.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:09:53 AM)
Actually, Neno and Wynn, could you tell us a little bit about yourselves, specifically, what you did before you enrolled at HEC and what you hope to do after you graduate? Plus, where are you from?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:10:42 AM)
Welcome to Arnoud Senpvangers, an HEC student.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:10:52 AM)
I'm not sure if anyone is still in the market for the 9/04 intake? Otherwise we also offer a Jan 05 intake.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:11:09 AM)
Arnoud, I just asked Neno and Wynn to tell a little about yourself. What did you do before you arrived at HEC and what do you hope to do after you graduate? Where are you from?

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:11:36 AM)
I'm from the Netherlands.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:12:07 AM)
For me, I've been able to enjoy life - traveling, culture - besides experiencing academic progress in 16 months. I worked in Beijing before as an entrepreneur, and then I came to the center of Europe - Paris - to explore this western silk road.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:13:10 AM)
Neno, when do you graduate?

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:13:19 AM)
? When is the deadline to take the GMAT to apply by the 28th of May for the Jan 2005 intake? Do you have conditional acceptance (like if your GMAT is 700 we take you)?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:13:43 AM)
No conditional admits, all apps must be complete before any decision is made. You need to check local test dates to plan.

Constantza (Apr 20, 2004 10:13:51 AM)
Joshua, what % of your Non-EU students who graduated last December secured assignments as of the 31st of March 2004?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:14:05 AM)
Josh, are there still spots open for Sept. '04?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:14:24 AM)
There are still spots for 9/04, but it's coming close to our deadline.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:14:30 AM)
For me it is very important to have independent time, atmosphere, and culture fiestas to enrich my mind and further my way forward. I may come to work again on Dec.04.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:14:40 AM)
The final deadline for 9/04 is also April 26, right?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:15:01 AM)
Neno, do you find that HEC is supporting your entrepreneurial bent?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:15:09 AM)
Please post your questions.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:15:16 AM)
That is correct, the final deadline for 9/04 is 26 April.

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:15:16 AM)
? So I should have GMAT scores when I apply? There's no possibility of sending them later?

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:15:17 AM)
Hi. I have 7 plus years in the finance sector. Prior to my MBA, I worked for JPMorgan IM and Citigroup Equities. I am a business manager and ran global teams of business analysts. In addition, I have worked as a consultant with UBS and a couple of start ups. Born in South Africa, I moved to the UK and that is where I received my undergraduate degree and worked. For me, the best things about HEC are France, the diversity of the students, marketing - which I feel is very strong - and the campus. I am finishing in December of this year.

kristin (Apr 20, 2004 10:15:23 AM)
? I have an interview May 1st with CIAM. Will I also have an interview with HEC, or will there be a representative there?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:15:46 AM)
Thanks, Wynn.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:15:51 AM)
You should have at least unofficial GMAT scores before applying.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:16:00 AM)
Please feel free to post your questions.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:16:11 AM)
CIAM is not the MBA; it is selection for a different program at HEC.

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:16:22 AM)
? You mean the ones the computer gives immediately after the test?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:16:30 AM)
Correct, Tankistka.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:16:45 AM)
Last week we completed 50% of our MBA and we will now enter our personal phase. For me, it is int'l finance, as I plan to leverage European expertise/ capital with rising markets in Asia Pacific.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:16:51 AM)
Josh, when you review an application, how do you go through it?

Celso Dominguez (Apr 20, 2004 10:17:03 AM)
Is there any chance to send all the requirements in the application but the GMAT score?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:17:16 AM)
Celso, you can submit your app on-line, then send supporting material, but no decision of any kind will be made without GMAT/ TOEFL. Our application is in two parts.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:17:45 AM)
Are your applications up or down from last year?

Constantza (Apr 20, 2004 10:17:47 AM)
Joshua / Arnoud / Neno - what % of HEC's Non-EU graduates from last Dec had jobs as of 31st March 2004 ?

Celso Dominguez (Apr 20, 2004 10:17:53 AM)
Yes, but I will be taking the GMAT on May 15 and would like to apply for Sep 04.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:18:08 AM)
James, you can also feel free to tell us a little about your background.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:18:22 AM)
Apps are slightly down from last year, as is the case industry-wide.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:18:50 AM)
Celso, May 15 is too late for Sept 04 intake. Apply for Jan 05.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:18:55 AM)
Josh, we had actually read (Herald Tribune) that apps were up in Europe. Perhaps they are down less in Europe than in the US.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:19:20 AM)
My info is that apps across the board tend to be down this year.

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:19:25 AM)
? On the HEC web-site it is written that students who haven't graduated from an English-speaking country have to take TOEFL. What about students who have a degree entirely taught in English, but are not from an English-speaking country?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:19:33 AM)
HEC seems to invest the interview with a lot of importance. Is it another data point in the admissions process or a "pass-fail" test?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:19:34 AM)
It's waived.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:19:46 AM)
The interview is very important. All admitted candidates have been interviewed, always live, never over the phone.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:20:04 AM)
Arnaud and James, what do you like best about HEC? What do you feel needs to be improved?

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:20:14 AM)
Hi. On this I viewed the interview as a positive. For me it gave me the chance to interview the school as much as the other way around.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:20:48 AM)
Josh, is the interview another source of data or is it a make-or-break factor in the application?

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:20:49 AM)
Do you have any advice for potential HEC applicants?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:21:02 AM)
The interview is generally make or break. It is rare (but possible) that the Adcom goes against interviewer recommendations.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:21:22 AM)
Welcome Guarav Gupta, a current HEC student. What is your background and goals for your MBA study?

karina mora (Apr 20, 2004 10:21:22 AM)
Hi. Can interviews be held in my country (Costa Rica) or do they need to be in one of the locations specified in the on-line application?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:21:34 AM)
They cannot be held in Costa Rica. The closest site is DF, or maybe Caracas?

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:21:36 AM)
Linda, the best thing at HEC are the people. I've met so many amazing students here, a truly humbling experience for me.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:01 AM)
Sorry, but what is DF?

Celso Dominguez (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:02 AM)
How about interviews in other Latin American countries??

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:05 AM)
Mexico City.

karina mora (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:12 AM)
Ok, thanks.

EuroMBA (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:16 AM)
? With the increasing cost of a European MBA (for US applicants, due to the weak dollar), Constanza's question re: non-EU employment rates is very important.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:17 AM)
Brazil, Argentina, Chile.

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:25 AM)
Could you please answer my previous question?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:36 AM)
Tankistka, could you please repeat it?

Constantza (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:46 AM)
Yes, non-EU employment rates are important to know. Applicants need to make an objective decision.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:22:48 AM)
We can't control exchange rates, but the Euro has fallen a bit. We don't keep stats on EU vs. non-EU given our population.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:23:01 AM)
We're going switch to a moderated mode.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:23:20 AM)
Please post your questions. I will choose as many as possible from the ones that you post.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:23:28 AM)
Learning a little French will make your life more fun :) and also consider the industry you may meet frequently in the Paris atmosphere. Also, hold a confident attitude to conquer and to decide before any unease or adventures, learn to balance life, job markets, and personal development.

Celso Dominguez (Apr 20, 2004 10:23:42 AM)
Josh, I am from Caracas, how can I contact a HEC rep?

karina mora (Apr 20, 2004 10:23:56 AM)
From the time of receipt of the application and all accompanying materials, how long does it take the admissions office to make a decision?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:24:14 AM)
E-mail me privately and I'll give contacts.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:24:30 AM)
Pre-selection decisions can be as fast as 1 week. Final admissions decisions take from 4-8 weeks when the app is complete.

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:24:35 AM)
Hi, Stephanie. Advice for applicants: know why you want an MBA. Not only will this help you answer questions in an interview, but it will also help during the hard times of the course. In addition, understand why HEC is different and how it suits you. You will be asked this.

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:25:16 AM)
On the HEC web-site it is written that students who haven't graduated form an English-speaking country have to do TOEFL. What about students who have a degree entirely taught in English but are not from an English speaking country?

EuroMBA (Apr 20, 2004 10:25:24 AM)
? Well, as a US applicant, it is important to be reassured that I will be able to repay the cost, and as the relative cost rises, the data on employment for US graduates of HEC is pretty critical information.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:25:30 AM)
Tankistka, the TOEFL is waived.

James HEC Student (Apr 20, 2004 10:26:00 AM)
Hey all. I am James from Australia. I am here to concentrate on the finance side of things. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:26:12 AM)
HEC students, if you could think back to your arrival at HEC. What would you have liked to know ahead of time?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:26:14 AM)
EuroMBA, I will answer, but I'm lost in the question. Can you please ask again and Linda moderate?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:26:23 AM)
What advice would you give new HEC students to ease their arrival?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:26:38 AM)
We offer pre-MBA French classes and student affairs handle much of the logistics. Also, a buddy system with current participants is helpful.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:27:08 AM)
Josh, EuroMBA is wondering if there is a way to obtain information on job placement for non-EU graduates of HEC. You replied that it isn't available on the web site, but is it perhaps obtainable?

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:27:16 AM)
Thank you, Wynn Davies.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:27:26 AM)
Of our non-EU grads almost half work in the EU after graduation. Obviously much depends on language skills, experience and interest.

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:27:48 AM)
Hi. I am Gaurav Gupta from India.. Feel free to ask any questions.

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:28:11 AM)
? Could you give an approximate amount for an HEC scholarship? Maybe from last year? On the website it's written "just depends."

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:28:37 AM)
Several financing options exist and award amounts vary. There are some citizen-specific scholarships and a guaranteed loan program with HSBC.

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:28:52 AM)
Hi, I am Arnoud from the Netherlands. I just finished the program last week. I did the entrepreneurial track. Feel free to ask any questions.

Constantza (Apr 20, 2004 10:28:59 AM)
Half of Non-EU grads in EU is actually not bad.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:29:18 AM)
What is the men to women ratio in HEC's most current class? Are you looking to increase your percentage of women at HEC?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:29:19 AM)
More than half work outside their home country.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:29:45 AM)
We are looking to increase the % of females.

Constantza (Apr 20, 2004 10:29:48 AM)
Gaurav, when do you graduate? Can you elaborate a bit on your background?

henry (Apr 20, 2004 10:29:52 AM)
Arnoud, the organization of HEC's programme is what caught my eye. How are the tracks organized?

karina mora (Apr 20, 2004 10:29:54 AM)
What is the student: faculty ratio?

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:29:59 AM)
Yes, we went to the south of France last August with 50 classmates, a really exciting experience!!! Funny classes, sunny days, Mediterranean blue, nice walks in towns full of cafes and fountains....for integration, for speaking francaise, and to rest and march rapidly again!!!

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:30:12 AM)
The student faculty ratio: The largest intro classes are around 60 people. Electives are smaller with a minimum of 10.

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:30:31 AM)
Hi, Henry, in the second semester students choose a track which is like a mini specialization and will prepare you better for the job market.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:30:46 AM)
What is HEC's most current GMAT average and range? What is considered a "competitive" score?

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:30:52 AM)
In response to Linda's questions - Before you arrive at HEC you should have a buddy who will help you. If this does not happen, write to Student Admin and ask for a new one. As Arnoud says, HEC students are amazingly helpful. Useful stuff before you start all your paperwork for bank loans etc. Get some basic French. It helps.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:31:01 AM)
The current average for the GMAT is 660. The GMAT range generally starts at 600, but we try to look at the entire app.

captainspaceship (Apr 20, 2004 10:31:26 AM)
Josh, to what extent does HEC ensure students attain a sufficient level of French (to gain employment in France if they choose)?

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:31:27 AM)
Hi, Constantza. I will be graduating in April 2005. I have an engineering background with some overseas work experience. What about you, Constantza?

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:31:53 AM)
I did the entrepreneurial track and right now I am in conversation with a number of start-ups to lead their commercial strategy.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:31:59 AM)
French is not an admissions requirement. Many of our participants learn once they are here, but having a minimum level of French is important if you want to work in France. And we offer French language classes before and during the program. If it is a priority, you have the opportunity.

go_kart (Apr 20, 2004 10:32:04 AM)
I'm from the U.S. What do you see as HEC's core strengths and comparative advantage to other European schools? Thanks!

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:32:28 AM)
How do students feel about HEC's campus life?

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:32:41 AM)
Henry, any specific questions about the tracks?

billg (Apr 20, 2004 10:32:45 AM)
What financial aids can we get from the state?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:33:02 AM)
US fed loans apply to HEC.

henry (Apr 20, 2004 10:33:05 AM)
Arnoud, I am focusing on marketing. Does this fit into the track scheme?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:33:26 AM)
HEC's core strengths are its powerful network and its ideal program structure.

James HEC Student (Apr 20, 2004 10:33:45 AM)
Also, for other advice, a lot of people off campus find it useful to have a car. On campus it is recommended for the first semester at least. It makes group work a bit easier and the campus life is good as well.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:33:48 AM)
English only or bi-lingual makes for a cooperative learning environment.

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:33:52 AM)
Core strengths: the HEC alumni  - we need them and they need us; a very diverse and international student body; as for academics, I can't say, since I have not done another MBA.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:33:59 AM)
The fact that it's bilingual to quatralingual, the balance of life/academics, that it's center stage for European affairs ... just mentioning you like France is ok :)

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:34:03 AM)
There is a specific marketing track which is led by a very tough (but good :-) ) professor.

billg (Apr 20, 2004 10:34:10 AM)
As someone who is bi-national (French/Senegalese), I am wondering if I have a better chance of admission as a French applicant?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:34:23 AM)
There are no national quotas, but welcome from Senegal.

captainspaceship (Apr 20, 2004 10:34:44 AM)
Josh, are students able to live on campus for the 1st semester as suggested, or are we locked into a 12 month contract?

henry (Apr 20, 2004 10:34:50 AM)
Thanks, Arnoud.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:34:54 AM)
How many US students are in the current HEC class? Is there a maximum number of students HEC is planning to accept from the US?

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:01 AM)
There is no locked contract.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:04 AM)
US is currently 12%. It looks like it will be more like 15% for the next intake. Numbers from the US are up.

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:07 AM)
Constantza, I will be taking up the Individual Professional Projects (IPP). Do you have any specific questions?

Guest (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:11 AM)
Joshua, why do students have to choose between one of these three - Electives / Consulting Project / Exchange? Most MBA programs offer at least 2 out of the three.

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:25 AM)
Henry - I am doing the marketing track next term, so if you want to ask anything specific, send me a private email.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:34 AM)
Many live here for 2 months, then go to Island in central Paris.

captainspaceship (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:37 AM)
Thanks, Neno.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:38 AM)
Thank you, Josh.

billg (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:42 AM)
How many Africans were there in the last class?

henry (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:44 AM)
Thanks, Wynn.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:35:53 AM)
Africa is underrepresented. We have a couple of North Africans, the odd West and East African.

James HEC Student (Apr 20, 2004 10:37:03 AM)
Campus life is very relaxed. There are parties each week for those inclined, and a lot of sports fields, tennis courts, etc. Even a small golf course.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:37:08 AM)
Concerning our application process, all apps are on-line. The application is in two parts: Candidate Profile and Supplemental Application. Submit the Candidate Profile, and we'll provide an initial evaluation before you submit the app. We don't look at French in the application process.

Constantza (Apr 20, 2004 10:37:11 AM)
Gaurav, there are engineering grads here also who work in Multimodal Logistics, Maritime Transport and Port Management for a large Danish MNC. There is a fair amount of international experience in the far-east, middle east and eastern Europe.

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:37:35 AM)
What French proficiency certificates are required to enter the Bilingual MBA?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:38:14 AM)
How does one obtain an initial evaluation?

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:38:17 AM)
billg. I am from SA and we have another Southern African in my year, and we have a lot of people who have lived or worked in Africa.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:38:30 AM)
Linda, just submit the Candidate Profile on-line, attach a resume, and ask for an evaluation which comes by e-mail in a couple of days.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:38:46 AM)
TFI, I think if you want it, there is a French teaching section, like the TOEFL in French.

Constantza (Apr 20, 2004 10:38:50 AM)
Joshua, I actually think the candidate profile submission and evaluation is a good idea. Do you have the time (I mean seriously) to evaluate hundreds of such profiles, giving personalized answers for each profile?

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 10:39:05 AM)
Do you have anybody from Kazakhstan? ex-USSR?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:39:13 AM)
The candidate profile is not an admissions decision, just some preliminary feedback. Access is from the admissions section of our site.

captainspaceship (Apr 20, 2004 10:39:36 AM)
Josh, if a student chooses to participate in an exchange, do they lose the opportunity to specialize, do a company consulting project, or do the generalist track?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:39:51 AM)
You need to choose one track only.

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:39:54 AM)
Tankistka, from my intake people were required to have a 700 score to get into the Bilingual track. However, this was at the time that the course started.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:40:25 AM)
What is the Men: Women ratio in HEC's most current class? Are you looking to increase your percentage of women at HEC?

How do HEC alums view HEC MBAs for networking?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:40:53 AM)
There are currently about 20% of female students. We are making efforts to increase this number.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:41:05 AM)
Ladies are welcome, I think, in the business world.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:41:09 AM)
Alumni of all the programs at HEC join the same association. The alumni network is a resource that can be very effective if you exploit intelligently, regardless of the program the alumni attended.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:41:19 AM)
Does HEC waitlist applicants?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:41:28 AM)
There is no waitlist.

James HEC Student (Apr 20, 2004 10:41:35 AM)
Tankistka, there are several people from Eastern Europe. There were a couple from Russia, the Ukraine and one from Kazakhstan in the September intake.

EuroMBA (Apr 20, 2004 10:42:13 AM)
?Is HEC taking steps to encourage higher interest by non-French recruiters (HEC website says in 2003, 47% of recruitment was by France-based companies)?

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:42:14 AM)
Any association welcomes you if you prove yourself and add value, make out your first step.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:42:43 AM)
EuroMBA: certainly.

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:42:49 AM)
Alumni network - quote from a student HEC gande ecole more helpful than MBA Alumni, and MBA alumni are helpful.

ana (Apr 20, 2004 10:42:53 AM)
Hi Josh, Ana here. What is the ratio of applicants to accepted students at HEC?

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:43:08 AM)
We will have a job fair in London in only two months for HEC.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:43:10 AM)
Selectivity is around 1:4.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:43:34 AM)
Perhaps one of the students can answer this one from Karina Mora:

karina mora (Apr 20, 2004 10:43:38 AM)
Can you explain a little bit about managing the growth track?

EuroMBA (Apr 20, 2004 10:43:40 AM)
Neno & Josh - thanks.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:43:43 AM)
I am very interested in HEC because of its strength in marketing. Can you tell me more about your marketing program and unique offerings in this department?

billg (Apr 20, 2004 10:44:06 AM)
Are there any contacts, or parties, with Executive MBA guys?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:44:26 AM)
EMBA grads also join the HEC alumni association.

Guest (Apr 20, 2004 10:44:45 AM)
Joshua, one last question please. Why do students have to choose one of the following three - Electives / Exchange / Consulting Project (Internship?)? Most B-schools offer the opportunity to do at least 2 of the 3 if not all three.

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:45:18 AM)
Billg, at the moment formally, no, but we have raised the question, and hopefully next year this will be happening. It is restricted to alumni and networking.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:45:26 AM)
What % of international participants are on the MBA?

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:45:34 AM)
76%.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:45:41 AM)
wrong, how did you get in?

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:45:46 AM)
84

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:45:49 AM)
And last week I found out that my group mates got an internship from a Dutch or UN firm, from a sustainable development forum held in Barcelona 1.5 hrs from Paris. Although the market is tough, I think people continue to bring back good news when they try. My friends got internships from GE medical, LVMH, SG,  and I-banking.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:45:50 AM)
Better.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:46:04 AM)
I was going to guess 80%.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:46:13 AM)
Indeed, top EU MBAs. They provide great value in the international makeup of participants. You can't find that anywhere in the US.

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:46:23 AM)
Stephanie, there is the basic training for all during the first semester. In the second semester you can go much deeper with the marketing track and add marketing electives. We have a number of big name professors here.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:46:42 AM)
What's HEC's policy towards re-applicants?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:46:55 AM)
Re-applicants are discouraged, unless something significant has changed.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:46:57 AM)
And HEC is only one excel both in Anglais/French world. I think it is like cars for consumers: not for everyone, but for guys who know to appreciate and explore.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:47:05 AM)
Thanks, Josh.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:47:41 AM)
In light of HBS' and Wharton's decision not to cooperate with BW, is HEC considering similar moves?

How efficient is the alumni at finding jobs?

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:48:09 AM)
Karina, the managing for growth contrasts with the entrepreneurship in company size. Both tracks are about strategy and leadership, for companies with managing for growth focusing on large enterprises and entrepreneurial tracks focusing on small businesses (kind of makes sense.... :-) )

Guest (Apr 20, 2004 10:48:42 AM)
Joshua, thanks a million for your time. Just one last question, why do HEC students have to choose one of the following three - the Exchange / Consulting Project (internship opportunity) / elective track? Most schools offer the opportunity to pursue at least 2 of the 3 if not all 3.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:48:49 AM)
Efficient enough. My Japanese group member called the alumni through his industry logistics and had dinner in Paris, then got a Fedex summer internship. But of course he can add value, too.

ana (Apr 20, 2004 10:49:20 AM)
Are any individual projects offered with partner companies as part of the degree process?

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:49:40 AM)
billg, the alumni network at HEC is represented both by the MBA and the Grand Ecole, and I must say that it is very receptive and encourages a lot of interaction.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:49:52 AM)
I see that LVMH recruits at HEC - are there any special connections/links/ties that HEC has with this corporation?

henry (Apr 20, 2004 10:49:55 AM)
Arnoud, the international mix seems great there - how is the environment, working together, etc?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:49:57 AM)
Several options for projects exist, either as individual or groups. One of the tracks is a consulting project. So there are chances to work with companies.

karina mora (Apr 20, 2004 10:50:04 AM)
Thanks, Arnoud.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:50:14 AM)
IPP we call it. Yes, firms can provide that and you can develop it both for credits for a degree and for jobs. My friend got an IPP in Singapore, and the firm actually gave him an offer.

ana (Apr 20, 2004 10:50:54 AM)
Is there support offered in finding the projects, or is it left primarily to the student?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:51:04 AM)
It's the participant's responsibility, but highly structured and monitored by faculty.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:51:15 AM)
Ana, both sides I think.

ana (Apr 20, 2004 10:51:25 AM)
Ok, thanks, Josh.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:51:55 AM)
What % of HEC's classes use the case-study method?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:52:26 AM)
It depends on the class, but case studies are very important--maybe 80% as an estimate. There is lots of group work.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:52:33 AM)
Will HEC consider applicants who already have earned an MBA?

karina mora (Apr 20, 2004 10:53:01 AM)
Josh, how many Latin American students were there in the last intake?

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:53:01 AM)
You can teach other MBA - why 2 MBA :)

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:53:22 AM)
Henry, this MBA is truly defined by the international student community. This provides one of the great learning opportunities here. One problem, though: I will be so busy visiting my new friends all over the world after the MBA!

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:53:28 AM)
We did well in Latin America this year. 18%.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:53:29 AM)
Neno, some people enjoyed it so much the first time around, they want to do it again ;-)

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:53:50 AM)
Ana - I have only done the core section so far and in it the the emphasis is to find companies and work with them. I have worked with L'Oreal and done some work at AT&T. In addition, people have presented to LVMH who came to meet us, and in May I am meeting with UN, etc. through a professor at HEC. I know in the marketing track we will be working with a company on new product development, and this contact is provided through the school. In other tracks this happens as well.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:53:54 AM)
Actually, some want a more prestigious degree or they want one with a more international focus.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:54:12 AM)
You should understand yourself, be coherent in your career, and you know you can convince people to help you earn 2+ MBAs.

That's GREAT to know. Thanks, Josh.

Where is the best place to find information about the joint MBA-LLB degree?

James HEC Student (Apr 20, 2004 10:54:23 AM)
Stephanie - it depends on the class. Some, like strategy, are all case, whereas statistics or finance (in first semester) is mainly lectures.

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:54:35 AM)
The website has some info on all double degrees: with LSE, Fletcher, Chinese U of Hong Kong, plus many in Latin America.

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:55:08 AM)
captainspaceship, you can find the information about the dual degree in the HEC's web site which has further individual links to each of the programs.

chris (Apr 20, 2004 10:56:19 AM)
Which companies are looking to hire HEC students?

James HEC Student (Apr 20, 2004 10:56:34 AM)

glen (Apr 20, 2004 10:56:43 AM)
Josh, I'm from Indonesia and it's the fourth largest country in the world by population - after China, India and the US, but I think there was only 1 Indonesian at HEC. Do you necessarily try to attract more students from here to balance out the population representation?

karina mora (Apr 20, 2004 10:56:53 AM)
Can you list examples of strategy-related electives available in the HEC MBA?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 10:57:05 AM)
We would like to have more students from Indonesia, but there are some structural issues such as GMAT test centers and financing.  I will discuss SE Asia with you later, if you want.

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:57:20 AM)
Stephanie, the atmosphere here is definitely collaborative. I must add constructive to that as well.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:58:08 AM)
True, and we have firm projects in the 2nd term where you can work as a strategy consultant if you prove yourself.

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 10:58:57 AM)
Stephanie, the grading system is based on absolute individual performance and is in no way relative.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 10:59:05 AM)
Thanks, James, Arnoud and Gaurav. Can you please expand on the grading system there - is there one?

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 10:59:26 AM)
Chris, you can find a list of companies who recruited or hired 2003 grads at http://www.hec.fr/hec/eng/mba/career/Recruits2003.pdf .

chris (Apr 20, 2004 10:59:42 AM)
Thanks, Linda!

ana (Apr 20, 2004 10:59:53 AM)
Josh, I'm interested in the Jan 05 intake, and I'm scheduled to take the GMAT in early July. The website says October is the final deadline, but what is the preferred application period for Jan? Is there a point by which the program is usually completely full?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 11:00:19 AM)
The priority deadline for Jan 05 is 28 May. We can't know if we will be full or not.  You should apply when your application is ready. Maybe consider taking the GMAT somewhere else that offers more dates.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 11:01:07 AM)
If you are looking at an application and the numbers and basic profile are in the ballpark for an HEC student, what distinguishes an application that is accepted from one that is rejected?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 11:01:26 AM)
Personality and leadership potential. Much of that comes out in the essays and interview.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 11:01:35 AM)
Students, any professors or classes that you particularly recommend?

James HEC Student (Apr 20, 2004 11:02:00 AM)
Stephanie - Arnaud is sorting out the grading question.

captainspaceship (Apr 20, 2004 11:02:03 AM)
How do you judge leadership potential?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 11:02:15 AM)
Leadership potential is determined by previous experience, personality, coherence of goals, and vision.

EuroMBA (Apr 20, 2004 11:02:16 AM)
?I've heard conflicting things regarding upper age limit for applicants - can you confirm if there is a strict cut-off age?

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:02:17 AM)
Ana - in the second term we do a marketing audit. You go with a team into a company and look at some part of marketing. This year I know we have a film company, L'Oreal, Cartier, etc.

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 11:02:29 AM)
Does anybody go on to do a PhD after the MBA?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 11:02:55 AM)
There is no strict age cut off, but for anyone over 35 or 36, the questions get harder.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:03:00 AM)
Strategy, economics, branding, int'l finance, luxury marketing: I got no.1 in RMB monetary systems case study with my groups last term, so I enjoy it.

billg (Apr 20, 2004 11:03:42 AM)
Any tips for the interviews?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 11:04:02 AM)
Interview tips? from the adcom side... Be prepared to sell yourself. And show your dedication to HEC and how you will contribute to the school in the short and long term.

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:04:18 AM)
Linda, personally, I have just done with core 1. I would certainly recommend courses in Strategies Management taken by Prof. Garrette and Dussage. They both are highly competitive in their subjects and have co-authored many books and articles.

EuroMBA (Apr 20, 2004 11:04:22 AM)
?MBA blogging by applicants and students keeps growing - any reason there are no HEC student bloggers? This really helps applicants get the flavor of a school.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:04:23 AM)
Smile from bottom of your heart, not before you enter the interview room.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 11:04:53 AM)
Another question for the students: What are some of the initial struggles you faced as a foreigner in France, living at HEC?

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:04:58 AM)
Linda, it is difficult to recommend a class as the first two terms are core and you have no choice. In addition, new electives get added and teachers change. It is best to wait until you get here. You have * months. In addition, different classes feel differently about profs. But I know almost everyone enjoys strategy in core.

captainspaceship (Apr 20, 2004 11:05:40 AM)
Perhaps one for the students: is there good course content dedicated to market research - brand in particular?

Tankistka (Apr 20, 2004 11:05:44 AM)
What is the average age of participants? minimum age?

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:05:47 AM)
Lim, French may be a little problem as the French cherish beautiful Franoise! but, in turn, this forces us to learn and to enjoy this culture.

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:05:48 AM)
Professors that stand out for me: Kapferer - marketing, Stolowy - management accounting, Santi - entrepreneurial track, Cheikh Rouhou - Macro, Lemattre - International affairs.

GauravGuptaHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:05:51 AM)
Linda, having said that, I feel all the professors at HEC are highly competitive and hold high in the area of their expertise.

Linda Abraham (Apr 20, 2004 11:06:23 AM)
Thanks for the feedback on classes and profs. No criticism is implied by not mentioning a given professor or class.

Stephanie Lim (Apr 20, 2004 11:06:48 AM)
Thanks, Arnoud and James - yes, that answers my questions regarding the grading system.

James HEC Student (Apr 20, 2004 11:06:51 AM)
Just enjoy the interviews. They are a good opportunity to chat and get information as much as give it.

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:06:52 AM)
Stephanie - living off campus is hard; it's difficult to find places. Having a strong English accent when speaking French amuses the locals. For me it's an adventure. It's not hard at all.

ArnoudSnepvangersHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:06:56 AM)
Ooops, and Garette for strategy.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:06:57 AM)
And I talked to all the top EUROPEAN MBAS about professors, who have same attitude; you get good people and you get more if you can tailor your own way of development.

NenoWeiHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:08:16 AM)

EuroMBA - it might be worth contacting the admin office and asking for the name of US students to pose your US specific questions to. I know I have been contacted in this way.

Yes, glen.

WynnDaviesHEC (Apr 20, 2004 11:13:12 AM)
Josh, we have one but he is a brain and had a lot of work experience while he was an undergrad.

glen (Apr 20, 2004 11:13:25 AM)
How about international experience, such as volunteering to help foreign visitors from various countries, even though it may not be directly dealing with business matters?

JoshHECAdmissions (Apr 20, 2004 11:13:47 AM)
karina, submit the candidate profile and we can better answer that question. But at the end of the day, if you don't try, you'll never know.
