Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 9:53:14 AM)
First I want to welcome you all to Accepted.com's CMU Tepper waitlist chat.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 9:53:22 AM)
Hi Linda--hi everyone--thank you for coming!

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 9:53:22 AM)
I also want to welcome Laurie Stewart, Director of Admissions at Tepper for joining us today.

mba_cand (Mar 27, 2006 9:53:33 AM)
Thank you Linda and Laurie.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 9:53:40 AM)
Thanks to everyone for joining.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 9:54:49 AM)
Thank you Linda for hosting this -- glad to answer your questions.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 9:55:31 AM)
Laurie, your FAQ encourages people submit helpful updates. What constitutes helpful information?

mba_cand (Mar 27, 2006 9:55:36 AM)
Hi Laurie. Is it possible to get an individual feedback on our application to know as to why you were waitlisted?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 9:56:46 AM)
Linda -- the updates depend on the person--we're interested in hearing from our candidates about anything new regarding their candidacy--job changes, refs, test scores, classes, etc.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 9:57:43 AM)
mba-cand-- Unfortunately, our workload this time of year doesn't permit individual feedback--but I've learned over the years that many candidates have a good idea of areas that they might target to strengthen their candidacy. You can start by looking at our recent class profiles, for example.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 9:57:57 AM)
What if the candidate believes he or she didn't address something well in the application, can she address that omission or weakness?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 9:58:33 AM)
Linda--absolutely--we welcome having additional info like that from candidates on our waiting list.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 9:58:55 AM)
Do you find letters of support from current students or recent alumni helpful? Or updates from employers?

mba_cand (Mar 27, 2006 9:59:13 AM)
Thank you Laurie. How often should a waitlisted candidate get in touch with the admissions office?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:00:01 AM)
Some candidates on the waiting list do visit campus and use that as an opportunity to meet current students -- it gives you a good chance to learn more about Tepper and our MBA program

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:00:42 AM)
Linda--employer updates can be really helpful too--it's not uncommon for a candidate on the waiting list to complete a significant project or obtain a promotion.

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:01:00 AM)
How many applicants did you place on this year waitlist?

pdatta (Mar 27, 2006 10:01:00 AM)
Based on additional information the waitlisted candidates submit, are they ranked within the waitlist thereafter?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:01:14 AM)
mba-cand--we would welcome hearing from you as often as you have updated info or if you have questions along the way.

mba_cand (Mar 27, 2006 10:01:42 AM)
Can a campus visit strengthen the candidacy of a waitlisted candidate?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:02:30 AM)
Berli--at the moment we have about 100 candidates on our waiting list--I should say that we offer place candidates on the waitlist that we see could be successful here--but their overall profile wasn't quite as strong as those offered admission to this point in the admission cycle.

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:02:58 AM)
Thanks, Laurie.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:03:10 AM)
pdatta--we don't rank our waiting list--but review each candidate and any updates along with applicants from each subsequent application round. We have offered admission to candidates that were waitlisted in round 1-- in round 2, for example.

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:04:15 AM)
From 100 candidate, how many you expect to admit them?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:04:48 AM)
mba_cand--we welcome campus visitors, and sometimes it helps individuals on the waiting list further refine their goals and often they will submit an additional essay that can strengthen their application.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:05:10 AM)
Berli--last year, we ultimately admitted about 40 from our waiting list--but that has varied widely from year-to-year.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:05:38 AM)
To follow up on the visit question, it's not the mere fact of visiting; it is the insight gained that helps, correct?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:05:58 AM)
We know that it is difficult to wait for a final decision--so we really appreciate candidates that are willing to wait through the process.

Abhishek (Mar 27, 2006 10:06:42 AM)
If I need to send updates on my promotion or any award, by what means should I send them? By email or through recommendation from a senior?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:06:43 AM)
Linda--exactly--and although we can't schedule admission interviews for candidates on the waiting list, we will try to make time to meet with them for a few minutes when they are here.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:07:17 AM)
Abhishek--all correspondence should go to mba-waitlist@andrew.cmu.edu.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:07:27 AM)
What applicant behavior detracts from a waitlisted applicant's chances?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:08:13 AM)
Linda--I'd say when we don't hear from someone on the waiting list--we assume that they may have made alternative plans.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:08:39 AM)
Can a waitlisted applicant be a nuisance?

Abhishek (Mar 27, 2006 10:08:45 AM)
Sorry to repeat my question again, but should I just list the updates and send them to the given email-id?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:09:58 AM)
Linda--that is rare--we like hearing from candidates on the waiting list.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:10:34 AM)
Abhishek--a short essay is a good way to present updates--more so than a list.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:10:41 AM)
What are the earliest and latest possible dates for being accepted from the waitlist? I believe the latest date is in the FAQ: June 12.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:11:11 AM)
Linda--a few were admitted with our round 2 applicants on March 13--the latest is June 12.

pdatta (Mar 27, 2006 10:11:11 AM)
Is another recommendation letter or a letter of support preferable than a supplemental essay?

mba_cand (Mar 27, 2006 10:11:59 AM)
How many applications has Tepper received so far and how many have been offered admission?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:12:34 AM)
pdatta--good question--it depends on the candidate--whichever is the strength or weakness you're trying to address with us.

akshat_mba (Mar 27, 2006 10:12:39 AM)
Is the latest date for international applicants different from those of domestic applicants considering that they have clear the visa procedures also?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:13:24 AM)
mba-cand--our pool is up about 10% so far this year--and our number of offers is consistent with last year, so it is a little more competitive to gain admission this year

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:14:04 AM)

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:14:13 AM)
akshat_mba--we have admitted some international candidates as late as June--and most have been successful in clearing their visa.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:15:21 AM)
If a waitlisted applicant is rejected and reapplies are they viewed favorably, or does the previous waitlist status not matter?

akshat_mba (Mar 27, 2006 10:15:21 AM)
Are waitlisted applicants also considered for scholarships?

pdatta (Mar 27, 2006 10:15:41 AM)
Is it OK if one brings in personally all the supplemental information during his/her visit to the campus?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:16:30 AM)
Linda--we do offer feedback in August for candidates that aren't successful getting admission--I encourage anybody that would like to reapply to arrange a telephone feedback appointment--we start scheduling them in July (for August).

Abhishek (Mar 27, 2006 10:17:03 AM)
Does Tepper offer deferred admissions to waitlisted candidates in case they are not able to secure admission this year?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:17:22 AM)
akshat--everyone is reviewed by our scholarship committee at the time of admission--including those offered admission that were originally on the waiting list.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:18:24 AM)
Linda--reapplicants need to compete against the new applicant pool--so the previous status is not all that significant, although getting feedback and experience with our application process may be helpful to them.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:18:43 AM)
pdatta--sure, we'd be glad to accept it from you when you visit.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:19:24 AM)
Abhishek--we don't offer admission deferrals at all, but we do have waitlisted students that reapply and are successful in the second application every year.

mba_cand (Mar 27, 2006 10:19:24 AM)
If a candidate is still in school can he submit updates on research projects handled and new courses taken (even if it is a music course)?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:20:14 AM)
mba-cand--sure, but you want to make sure our admissions committee understands the relevance of the new info--how you present it in an essay, etc., is key.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:20:18 AM)
If a waitlisted applicant is accepted at another school, but prefers Tepper, and is approaching a date when he has to make a decision, do you want to know about his or her situation?

Am123 (Mar 27, 2006 10:20:45 AM)
Hello Laurie. Are most of the waitlist applicants that ultimately receive acceptance to Tepper offered admission in the final rounds, i.e. in June?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:21:44 AM)
Linda--Sometimes candidates will face a deadline with another school and they let us know--but we really can't change the timing of our review process. We understand that there are times when candidates need to move forward with other plans because they simply can't wait any longer.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:23:00 AM)
Am123--I'd say most waitlist candidates hear from us with Round 3 applicants (May 1st) or in mid-June. Some hear earlier, but not as many.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:24:29 AM)
mba-cand--it would be hard for me to guess how a music course fits with your overall career plan and interest in Tepper, so it would be something you could explain in an essay.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:25:04 AM)
When would you encourage waitlisted applicants to retake the GMAT?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:26:12 AM)
Linda--I think retaking GMAT can best strengthen your candidacy if you're in the lower part of our range of scores. We always use the 'best score' when making our decision on a candidate.

akshat_mba (Mar 27, 2006 10:26:49 AM)
If a waitlisted applicant would like be interviewed again would the admissions committee encourage another interview?

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:26:49 AM)
I would appreciate if you could give a rough estimate of the number of waitlisted candidates at CMU?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:27:39 AM)
akshat--mba--unfortunately, our workload (especially with higher application volumes) just doesn't allow a second admission interview.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:28:02 AM)
mbafall--about 100 on the waiting list right now--and last year we ultimately admitted 40.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:28:36 AM)
Thanks for all the questions everyone--and for being part of our waiting list.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:29:00 AM)
Hi Laurie, how many candidates were pulled out from the waitlist last year?

pdatta (Mar 27, 2006 10:29:21 AM)
Thanks Laurie and Linda for all the valuable inputs.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:29:29 AM)
mbafall--last year it was around 40, but it has varied pretty widely from year-to-year.

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:30:13 AM)
Did most of admitted candidates last year sent supplemental information?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:30:55 AM)
Berli--yes, most did submit some form of additional info.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:31:37 AM)
Hi Linda, if I want to send an additional essay, should I send that essay via email to mba-waitlist@andrew.cmu.edu? Is sending an additional essay recommended?

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:31:53 AM)
How long of an essay do you expect to see to update ones profile?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:32:03 AM)
mbafall--yes, that is the correct address. We also accept by regular mail--to our office address "Attention-MBA Waitlist."

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:32:24 AM)
Berli--I wouldn't recommend any longer than a page or two.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:32:54 AM)
Hi Linda, what is the preferred way of sending an additional recommendation? Can I use the online system to request an additional recommendation even at this point?

akshat_mba (Mar 27, 2006 10:33:00 AM)
Where should we send letters of support?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:34:08 AM)
All correspondence can be sent to the email (mba-waitlist@andrew.cmu.edu) or to our office address Masters Admissions Office; Tepper School of Business, Carnegie MEllon University; Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3890 (Attention-MBA Waitlist). You want to keep it very readable--double spacing is helpful to our committee when reading :-)

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:34:19 AM)
Hi Laurie. Is it preferable to use a recommendation from a current student or from my ex-supervisor?

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:35:05 AM)
It seems that there are some waitlisted candidates who come from same country as me. Do you have a limited number of student per country?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:35:34 AM)
mbafall--hard to say for sure--the best references are from those who know you best--know what you have accomplished and how you can contribute.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:35:56 AM)
Berli--we don't have limits on the number of students from any country.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:36:06 AM)
Hi Laurie, why was the class size decreased to 150 in the past two years?

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:36:36 AM)
Hi Laurie, what has been the percentage rise in the number of applicants this year?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:37:07 AM)
mbafall--our class size is about 160-170. We made the decision to reduce our class size to make better use of resources (like faculty and facilities) and to enhance the educational experience for our students. The class size reduction (about 1/3) has been unanimously favorable with our students.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:37:12 AM)
MBAFALL, Laurie said earlier that applications are up roughly 10% at Tepper this year.

mba_cand (Mar 27, 2006 10:37:44 AM)
Is there a fixed percentage of male and female students that Tepper admits?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:38:25 AM)
mba-cand--no- we don't have fixed percentage based on gender.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:38:33 AM)
Hi Laurie, will the admission committee get time to give feedback on the weakness of an applicant?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:39:07 AM)
mbafall--we do feedback telephone appointments in August each year (not during the admission season.)

jose_g (Mar 27, 2006 10:39:19 AM)
Hi Laurie. Were there any students that moved off the waitlist after the second round notifications or will all waitlist students have to wait until June?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:39:55 AM)
jose--we did admit a few students that were waitlisted in Round 1 along with our Round 2 notifications--but most will be in May or June.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:40:27 AM)
Hi Laurie, given that the class size is approximately 160-170, how many offers of admissions are expected to be given in total?

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:40:36 AM)
My GMAT is 650. Do you recommend I retake the GMAT?

akshat_mba (Mar 27, 2006 10:40:44 AM)
What do you look for in a strong letter of support?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:41:30 AM)
mba-fall, it depends on the yield--but I'd expect around 320-340 admission offers this year.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:41:45 AM)
Hi Laurie, how do I inform the admissions committee that I am interested to be part of the active waitlist?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:42:06 AM)
Berli- Your GMAT is a little low in our range--our average is close to 700 this year, so if you thought you could improve your score, you may want to consider retaking it.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:42:26 AM)
mbafall--send an email to mba-waitlist@andrew.cmu.edu.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:42:49 AM)
What is the last date when I can submit the supplemental information?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:43:32 AM)
akshat--we're looking for specific examples of what you've contributed.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:43:46 AM)
Hi Laurie, what has been the acceptance rate till now?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:44:01 AM)
mba-fall--you probably want to have any supplemental info in to us by end of May since we'll do our final reviews in early June.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:44:24 AM)
mbafall--too early to say--most candidates have reply deadlines at end of April.

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:44:49 AM)
How can I contact current students who come from my country?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:44:54 AM)
Great questions everyone--thank you!

jose_g (Mar 27, 2006 10:45:07 AM)
Laurie - does Tepper primarily use the waitlist to round out the class and ensure diversity?

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:45:14 AM)
Berli--You can visit the 'Tepper Talk' website--there is a searchable database there.

mbafall06 (Mar 27, 2006 10:45:47 AM)
Laurie, what typical mistakes an applicant makes that ends him up in the CMU waitlist?

Berli (Mar 27, 2006 10:45:59 AM)

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:46:47 AM)
jose--the waiting list consists of good candidates, who just weren't judged as strong as others in the admission process--and since our space is limited, we couldn't offer admission now, but may be able to later. The pool is really competitive.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:46:56 AM)
Thank you again all for participating this evening. Special thanks to Laurie for taking the time to virtually meet with you, provide this information, and make this process as transparent and humane as possible.

akshat_mba (Mar 27, 2006 10:47:11 AM)
Thanks Linda and Laurie.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:47:22 AM)
The CMU Tepper waitlist FAQ is very useful. Remember to use it. If you want to submit additional material to Tepper, please send it to mba-waitlist@andrew.cmu.edu.

pdatta (Mar 27, 2006 10:47:28 AM)
Thanks again Linda and Laurie; it is very useful.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:47:45 AM)
Thanks much for hosting, Linda--hope this was helpful!

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:47:51 AM)
Have a very day! Good luck with your applications!

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:47:56 AM)
Good luck everyone with your applications and the waiting list.

Linda Abraham (Mar 27, 2006 10:48:03 AM)
You're most welcome, Laurie.

LaurieStewartCMU (Mar 27, 2006 10:48:06 AM)
Thanks again all :-)
