I decided to apply to graduate school from a fairly non-traditional background. I had limited research experience, and had pursued seemingly disparate professional endeavors after college. I was nervous about constructing a narrative for my graduate school applications. Dr. Rothman,  through phone calls and Skype interviews, got to know me as a person. He guided my writing process in a way that allowed me to write an effective personal statement that still felt like my own story. He helped me translate my experiences into a linear and coherent story. Barry is approachable, detailed, and quick to respond. I started applying to molecular biology and biochemistry doctoral programs essentially by myself. Though I was in communication with my undergraduate institution’s career services center, it had been multiple years since I graduated and I lived on the opposite side of the country. I lacked an academic community or a mentor who could provide me real-time feedback on my personal statements and statements of purpose. My initial drafts for these documents were decent, but I knew they could be better. I contacted Accepted.com hoping to find someone who could help me improve my application materials.

I feel very lucky to have been paired with Dr. Rothman. In addition to providing excellent feedback on my drafts and the general application process, Dr. Rothman worked around my highly restrictive schedule to regularly meet with me over the phone. He was a great personality fit for my needs – empathetic but never coddling; blunt and straightforward but never unduly harsh. He was a consistently supportive and helpful presence during a very stressful period of my life. With his input, I was able to dramatically strengthen my graduate application materials and submit them proudly. Dr. Rothman then helped me work on my interviewing skills after I had been invited to interview at two of my top choice schools.

With Dr. Rothman’s help, I moved confidently through every step of the admissions process. I now feel much more optimistic about my graduate school options. I would recommend his services to anyone pursuing a graduate-level science education.

I did mock interviews with Prof. Barry Rothman for a Harvard University doctoral program. My biggest fears were that (1) I did not know what questions to expect; (2) I had no idea how to structure my answers in an efficient manner; and (3) I suffered from a little anxiety about the interview and hence needed to prepare psychologically, as well. Prof. Rothman was very quick to get back to me after I submitted my request on Accepted.com. On our first call, we went through my entire graduate application and some of the questions the interviewers may ask. During that call, I was taken aback by how valuable Prof. Rothman's input was. He helped me address my known fears head on and more importantly, he mentored me on certain elements I to improve on that I was not aware of. As the saying goes, you don't know what you don't know.
The second call was the official mock interview, during which Prof. Rothman asked some of the questions we discussed on our previous call to test my preparation. However, he also had some questions that we did not discuss at all, and I was surprised by my ability to answer those too. Not only did this help calm my nerves, but it also was a fantastic way to test my adaptability to interview variability, making sure I stay focused on telling my story as a strong candidate for the program, and that I was steering clear from regurgitating memorized answers. Last but not least, Prof. Rothman is super friendly, highly experienced, and genuinely cared about my success for the interview. I am happy to say that because of his mentorship, my interview was a huge success!
