Congratulations on making the decision to pursue higher education! The path that you are embarking on will challenge you in new and exciting ways. With my extensive experience in academic advising, I would be delighted to guide you through the admissions process. For the past five years with the UC Davis School of Medicine Postbaccalaureate Program, I have worked closely with students from diverse backgrounds, helping them to improve their writing and learning skills as they prepare to apply to professional schools in healthcare. To excel in my job as a Student Advisor, I pursued an MA in Composition and Rhetoric so that I could better assist students in developing first-rate writing and interviewing skills. I also worked with medical school faculty and learning skills specialists to empower students to reach their academic goals and have myself learned what is important to medical school selection committees when they evaluate an application.
As a result, under my guidance students were able to achieve record high GPA’s during their post-baccalaureate year and equally stellar acceptance rates into medical school. In my last application cycle with the program, 92% of the students I advised were accepted into professional health schools across the country.
In hindsight, it’s clear that my education and early work experience were also preparation for my work as an admissions consultant and application essay editor. As an undergraduate at UC Davis, I chose to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in English to study great works of literature and to obtain knowledge of the world through a multitude of perspectives and life experiences. During my junior and senior years, I was selected to become a writing tutor for the UC Davis Learning Skills Center, and I collaborated one-on-one with students from all majors and backgrounds to help them write more clearly. I most enjoyed working with non-native English speakers and those students who provided culturally diverse opinions and perspectives. After studying abroad in Italy, I decided to teach English in Germany after graduation to continue working with ESL students. I also became a freelance editor for the McGraw Hill Publishing Company and Teacher Created Materials. I taught executives at companies in Frankfurt, Mainz and Wiesbaden, and I quickly became the most requested instructor as my students made rapid progress and furthered their career goals. Here are a few comments from my students: “Her enthusiasm, genuine care and leadership role really make all the difference.” “A big thank you!!! Especially to Alicia who has worked so hard in helping each and every one of us.” “[I] can’t even express how grateful I am for all that [Alicia has] done for me. My life will never be the same.” “[Alicia is] amazing....No one has the compassion or understanding that [she has] or has taken the time out to really help me and believe in me. With [her] guidance, I was able to get straight A’s something I never thought I would be able to do.” I love teaching and mentoring because I learn from every student I teach. It would be an honor to work with you and to support you on your road to success!
